Abstract

Aliphatic materials and their use in passive heating and cooling applications are generally disclosed. In some embodiments, dibasic acids and esters (diesters) thereof and their use in passive heating and cooling applications are disclosed. In some embodiments, C 18 dibasic acids and esters thereof are disclosed, including their use in passive heating and cooling applications. In some embodiments, various olefins, including alkenes and olefinic acids and esters, are disclosed, including their use in passive heating and cooling applications.

Claims (27)

1. A method of storing or releasing thermal energy, the method comprising:

using a compound of formula (I):

wherein:

X 1 is —(CH 2 ) 16 — or —(CH 2 ) 18 —;

R 1 is C 1-12 alkyl, which is optionally substituted one or more times by —OH; and

R 2 is C 1-12 alkyl, which is optionally substituted one or more times by —OH.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein X 1 is —(CH 2 ) 16 —.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is an unbranched C 1-12 alkyl, which is optionally substituted one or more times by —OH.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein R 1 is methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, or octyl.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein R 1 is —CH 2 —OH, —CH 2 —CH 2 —OH, —CH(—CH 3 —CH 2 —OH, or —CH 2 —CH(—OH)—CH 3 .

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl, which is optionally substituted one or more times by —OH.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein R 1 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl that comprises branching at the α-position.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein R 1 is isopropyl, sec-butyl, or tert-butyl.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein R 1 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl that comprises branching at the β-position.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein R 1 is isobutyl or 2-ethylhexyl.

11. The method of claim 6 , wherein R 1 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl that comprises branching at the ψ-position.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein R 1 is isobutyl, isoamyl, neopentyl, or 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl.

13. The method of claim 3 , wherein R 2 is an unbranched C 1-12 alkyl, which is optionally substituted one or more times by —OH.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein R 2 is methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, or octyl.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein R 2 is —CH 2 —OH, —CH 2 —CH 2 —OH, —CH(—CH 3 )—CH 2 —OH, or —CH 2 —CH(—OH)—CH 3 .

16. The method of claim 6 , wherein R 2 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl, which is optionally substituted one or more times by —OH.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein R 2 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl that comprises branching at the α-position.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein R 2 is isopropyl, sec-butyl, or tert-butyl.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein R 2 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl that comprises branching at the β-position.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein R 2 is isobutyl or 2-ethylhexyl.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein R 2 is a branched C 1-12 alkyl that comprises branching at the ψ-position.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein R 2 is isobutyl, isoamyl, neopentyl, or 3,5,5-trimethylhexyl.
