Surgical evacuation sensing and generator control
Surgical systems can include evacuation systems for evacuating smoke, fluid, and/or particulates from a surgical site. A surgical evacuation system can be intelligent and may include one or more sensors for detecting one or more properties of the surgical system, evacuation system, surgical procedure, surgical site, and/or patient tissue, for example.
1. A surgical system, comprising:
a first control circuit comprising a situational awareness module, wherein said situational awareness module receives data from a plurality of sources, and wherein said situational awareness module is configured to infer an anticipated amount of smoke in real time; and
an intelligent surgical evacuation system, comprising:
a pump;
a motor operably coupled to said pump;
a housing, wherein said pump and said motor are positioned within said housing;
a flow path fluidically coupled to said pump;
a sensor positioned along said flow path, wherein said sensor is configured to monitor a parameter of a fluid flowing along said flow path; and
a second control circuit in said housing, wherein said second control circuit comprises a sensing and intelligent controls circuit; and
a generator operably configured to supply an energy waveform to an electrosurgical instrument;
wherein said sensing and intelligent controls circuit is configured to:
receive the parameter from said sensor;
receive input from said situational awareness module indicative of the anticipated amount of smoke;
evaluate the parameter; and
selectively transmit a signal to cause said generator to adjust the energy waveform supplied by said generator in response to the parameter received from said sensor and the input from said situational awareness module.
2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the parameter is selected from the following list of parameters: temperature, particulate concentration, aerosol percentage, and contamination percentage.
3. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said second control circuit is configured to adjust a speed of said motor when the parameter comprises a particulate concentration that exceeds a threshold concentration.
4. The surgical system of claim 3 , wherein said second control circuit comprises a processor and a memory communicatively coupled to said processor, wherein said memory stores instructions executable by said processor, and wherein said processor is in signal communication with said sensor and said motor.
5. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said second control circuit is configured to adjust the energy waveform supplied by said generator when the parameter comprises a particulate concentration that exceeds a threshold value.
6. The surgical system of claim 5 , further comprising a surgical hub that comprises said first control circuit and said situational awareness module, wherein said second control circuit is configured to determine the threshold value at a plurality of steps in a surgical procedure based on input from said situational awareness module.
7. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising said electrosurgical instrument, wherein said electrosurgical instrument comprises an actuator configured to receive an input corresponding to a requested energy level, and wherein the energy waveform supplied by said generator corresponds to the requested energy level unless the parameter exceeds a threshold value.
8. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a surgical hub, wherein said surgical hub further comprises said first control circuit and said situational awareness module, and wherein said second control circuit is configured to determine a tissue type based on input from said situational awareness module and said sensor.
9. A surgical system, comprising:
a first control circuit comprising a situational awareness module, wherein said situational awareness module receives data from a plurality of sources, and wherein said situational awareness module is configured to infer an anticipated amount of smoke in real time; and
an intelligent surgical evacuation system, comprising:
a pump;
a motor operably coupled to said pump;
a housing, wherein said pump and said motor are positioned within said housing;
a flow path fluidically coupled to said pump;
a sensor positioned along said flow path, wherein said sensor is configured to monitor a parameter of a fluid flowing along said flow path; and
a second control circuit in said housing, wherein said second control circuit comprises a sensing and intelligent controls circuit; and
a generator operably configured to supply power to an electrosurgical instrument;
wherein said sensing and intelligent controls circuit is configured to:
receive the parameter from said sensor;
receive input from said situational awareness module indicative of the anticipated amount of smoke;
evaluate the parameter; and
selectively transmit a signal to cause said generator to adjust the power supplied by said generator based on the parameter received from said sensor and the input from said situational awareness module.
10. The surgical system of claim 9 , wherein the parameter is selected from the following list of parameters: temperature, particulate concentration, aerosol percentage, and contamination percentage.
11. The surgical system of claim 9 , wherein said second control circuit is configured to adjust the power supplied by said generator when the parameter comprises a particulate concentration that exceeds a threshold value to reduce the volume of smoke generated by the electrosurgical instrument.
12. The surgical system of claim 11 , further comprising a surgical hub that comprises said first control circuit and said situational awareness module, and wherein said second control circuit is configured to determine the threshold value at a plurality of steps in a surgical procedure based on input from said situational awareness module.
13. The surgical system of claim 9 , further comprising a surgical hub that comprises said first control circuit and said situational awareness module, wherein said second control circuit is configured to determine an energy modality for said generator based on input from said situational awareness module.
14. The surgical system of claim 13 , wherein the selected energy modality corresponds to a collagen-to-elastin ratio of tissue in said flow path.
15. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer readable instructions which, when executed, cause a machine to:
communicably couple to a control circuit comprising a situational awareness module, wherein the situational awareness module is configured to infer an anticipated amount of smoke in real time;
receive a user input corresponding to a user-requested power level;
transmit a signal corresponding to the user-requested power level to a generator for an electrosurgical instrument;
receive a parameter detected by a sensor, wherein the sensor is positioned along a flow path of a surgical evacuation system and configured to monitor the parameter of a fluid flowing along the flow path, and wherein the surgical evacuation system further comprises a pump fluidically coupled to the flow path and a motor operably coupled to the pump;
selectively override the user-requested power level supplied by the generator when the parameter exceeds a threshold value; and
determine the threshold based on input from the situational awareness module, wherein the input is indicative of the anticipated amount of smoke.
16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the parameter is selected from the following list of parameters: temperature, particulate concentration, aerosol percentage, and contamination percentage.
17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed, cause the machine to adjust the power supplied by the generator when the parameter comprises a particulate concentration that exceeds the threshold value.
18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed, cause the machine to determine the threshold value at a plurality of steps in a surgical procedure based on input from said situational awareness module.
19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed, cause the machine to determine an energy modality for the generator based on input from said situational awareness module.
20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the selected energy modality corresponds to a collagen-to-elastin ratio of tissue in the flow path.
21. A surgical system, comprising:
a surgical hub comprising a first control circuit comprising a situational awareness module, wherein said situational awareness module receives data from a plurality of sources; and
an intelligent surgical evacuation system, comprising:
a pump;
a motor operably coupled to said pump;
a housing, wherein said pump and said motor are positioned within said housing;
a flow path fluidically coupled to said pump;
a sensor positioned along said flow path, wherein said sensor is configured to monitor a parameter of a fluid flowing along said flow path; and
a second control circuit in said housing, wherein said second control circuit comprises a sensing and intelligent controls circuit; and
a generator operably configured to supply an energy waveform to an electrosurgical instrument;
wherein said sensing and intelligent controls circuit is configured to:
receive the parameter from said sensor;
receive input from said situational awareness module;
evaluate the parameter; and
selectively transmit a signal to cause said generator to adjust the energy waveform supplied by said generator in response to the parameter received from said sensor and the input from said situational awareness module,
wherein said second control circuit is configured to adjust the energy waveform supplied by said generator when the parameter comprises a particulate concentration that exceeds a threshold value, and
wherein said second control circuit is further configured to determine said threshold value at a plurality of steps in a surgical procedure based on input from said situational awareness module.
22. A surgical system, comprising:
a surgical hub comprising a first control circuit comprising a situational awareness module, wherein said situational awareness module receives data from a plurality of sources; and
an intelligent surgical evacuation system, comprising:
a pump;
a motor operably coupled to said pump;
a housing, wherein said pump and said motor are positioned within said housing;
a flow path fluidically coupled to said pump;
a sensor positioned along said flow path, wherein said sensor is configured to monitor a parameter of a fluid flowing along said flow path; and
a second control circuit in said housing, wherein said second control circuit comprises a sensing and intelligent controls circuit; and
a generator operably configured to supply an energy waveform to an electrosurgical instrument;
wherein said sensing and intelligent controls circuit is configured to:
receive the parameter from said sensor;
receive input from said situational awareness module;
evaluate the parameter; and
selectively transmit a signal to cause said generator to adjust the energy waveform supplied by said generator in response to the parameter received from said sensor and the input from said situational awareness module, and
wherein said second control circuit is configured to determine a tissue type based on input from said situational awareness module and said sensor.
