Abstract

A surgical evacuation system for communication between a smoke evacuation device and a filter device through a communication circuit is provided. The surgical evacuation system can include a smoke evacuation device, which can include a pump and a motor operably coupled to the pump. The surgical evacuation system also can include a communication circuit and a filter device in communication with the smoke evacuation device through the communication circuit. The filter device can include a plurality of filter components including filter elements and filter sensors. The filter elements can include a fluid filter, particulate filter, and/or a charcoal filter. The communication circuit is configured to authenticate the filter components, verify a remaining life of at least one of the filter components, update parameters output from the filter components, and record errors output from the filter components.

a plurality of filter elements comprising at least one of a fluid filter, a particulate filter, and a charcoal filter; and

a plurality of filter sensors,

wherein the communication circuit is configured to:

determine authenticity of the plurality of filter components;

verify a remaining life of at least one of the plurality of filter components;

update parameters output from the plurality of filter components; and

record errors output from the plurality of filter components.

2. The surgical evacuation system of claim 1 , wherein the communication circuit is further configured to limit a number or a type of a filter component that can be identified by the communication circuit.

3. The surgical evacuation system of claim 1 , wherein the communication circuit is further configured to enable or disable the plurality of filter components based on a result of the determination of authenticity of the plurality of filter components.

4. The surgical evacuation system of claim 1 , wherein the communication circuit determines authenticity of the plurality of filter components by using filter component information.

5. The surgical evacuation system of claim 4 , wherein the filter component information comprises at least one of a product type, a product name, a unique device identifier, a product trademark, a serial number, and a configuration parameter of the plurality of filter components.

6. The surgical evacuation system of claim 1 , wherein the filter device is configured to encrypt the parameters output from the plurality of filter components before sending the parameters to the communication circuit.

7. The surgical evacuation system of claim 6 , wherein upon receiving the encrypted parameters, the communication circuit decrypts the encrypted parameters.

8. The surgical evacuation system of claim 1 , wherein the communication circuit acts as a master device and the filter device acts as a slave device, wherein the communication between the master device and the slave device is unidirectional from the master device to the slave device when determining authenticity of the plurality of filter components.

9. A method for communication between a smoke evacuation device and a filter device through a communication circuit, wherein the method comprises:

determining, by the communication circuit, authenticity of a plurality of filter components in the filter device, wherein the plurality of filter components include:

a plurality of filter elements comprising at least one of a fluid filter, a particulate filter, and a charcoal filter; and

a plurality of filter sensors;

verifying, by the communication circuit, a remaining life of at least one of the plurality of filter components;

updating, by the communication circuit, parameters output from the plurality of filter components; and

recording, by the communication circuit, errors output from the plurality of filter components,

wherein the smoke evacuation device comprises:

a pump; and

a motor operably coupled to the pump.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising limiting a number or a type of a filter component that can be identified by the communication circuit.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising enabling or disabling, by the communication circuit, the plurality of filter components based on a result of the determination of authenticity of the plurality of filter components.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the communication circuit determines authenticity of the plurality of filter components by using filter component information.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the filter component information comprises at least one of a product type, a product name, a unique device identifier, a product trademark, a serial number, and a configuration parameter of the plurality of filter components.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising encrypting, by the filter device, the parameters output from the plurality of filter components before sending the parameters to the communication circuit.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising upon receiving the encrypted parameters, decrypting, by the communication circuit, the encrypted parameters.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the communication circuit acts as a master device and the filter device acts as a slave device, wherein the communication between the master device and the slave device is unidirectional from the master device to the slave device when determining authenticity of the plurality of filter components.
