Abstract

An adapter assembly includes a single-piece or two-piece multi-fiber adapter defining a recess at which a contact assembly is disposed. The adapter assemblies can be disposed within adapter block assemblies or cassettes, which can be mounted to moveable trays. Both ports of the adapters disposed within adapter block assemblies are accessible. Only one port of each adapter disposed within the cassettes are accessible. Circuit boards can be mounted within the block assemblies or cassettes to provide communication between the contact assemblies and a data network.

2. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a peripheral wall extending upwardly from a base, the peripheral wall defining the first and second port ends and defining the first and second sidewalls; and wherein the housing further includes a cover that latches to the peripheral wall to close the interior.

3. The adapter block assembly of claim 2 , wherein the cover includes a plurality of light pipes that provide a path through which light travels from the interior to an exterior of the housing.

4. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , wherein the top side of the housing defines a first labeling surface spaced along the length from a second labeling surface.

5. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , wherein the interior is a first interior, and wherein the housing also defines a second interior separate from the first interior, the first interior being accessible through some of the openings of the first and second port ends and the second interior being accessible through others of the openings of the first and second port ends.

6. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a first housing piece and a second housing piece that connect directly together.

7. The adapter block assembly of claim 6 , wherein each of the first and second housing pieces includes alignment members that cooperate to align the first and second housing pieces during assembly.

8. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

a circuit board disposed within the interior of the housing;

a plurality of media reading interfaces contacting the circuit board, each of the media reading interfaces extending partially into one of the multi-fiber adapters; and

a circuit board connector extending from the circuit board, the circuit board connector being accessible from an exterior of the housing.

9. The adapter block assembly of claim 8 , further comprising:

at least a second circuit board that electrically connects to the first circuit board; and

a plurality of second media reading interfaces contacting the second circuit board, each of the second media reading interfaces extending partially into one of the multi-fiber adapters.

10. The adapter block assembly of claim 9 , further comprising:

at least a third circuit board that electrically connects to the first circuit board; and

a plurality of third media reading interfaces contacting the third circuit board, each of the third media reading interfaces extending partially into one of the multi-fiber adapters.

11. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , wherein each multi-fiber adapter includes an adapter body extending between the first and second ports.

12. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , wherein each multi-fiber adapter includes first and second pieces that fit together, each of the first and second pieces defining one of the first and second ports.

13. The adapter block assembly of claim 12 , wherein the first and second pieces are identical.

14. The adapter block assembly of claim 1 , wherein each multi-fiber adapter includes a mounting recess extending along a length between opposite ends of the mounting recess, the mounting recess having a recessed surface that is recessed relative to the first end and is configured to receive a contact assembly, the mounting recess also defining a first aperture through the surface that leads to an interior of the multi-fiber adapter.

15. The adapter block assembly of claim 14 , wherein a plurality of parallel ribs are disposed at the opposite ends of the mounting recess, the ribs extending over less than a majority of the length of the mounting recess.

16. The adapter assembly of claim 15 , wherein a contact assembly is sized to fit in the mounting recess so that a body of the contact assembly seats on the recessed surface and so that the contact members extend between the ribs at the opposite ends of the mounting recess.

17. The adapter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the multi-fiber adapter is formed as a two-piece housing, each housing piece being configured to receive a separate contact assembly, each contact assembly including a plurality of contact members held together by a body.

18. An adapter block assembly comprising:

a housing extending along a length between first and second sidewalls, each of the first and second sidewalls of the housing including a retention member extending outwardly from the respective sidewall, the housing including first and second port ends, a top side, and a bottom side that each extend along the length between the first and second sidewalls to define an interior, each port end defining a plurality of openings providing access to the interior of the housing;
