Abstract

A system includes a processor configured to detect an onboard request for vehicle-action reporting configuration. The processor is also configured to send a vehicle identifier to a configuration server, responsive to the request. The processor is further configured to receive a set of configuration data, representing tuned trigger variables for vehicle reporting, tuned to a vehicle identified by the identifier. Additionally, the processor is configured to use the configuration data to tune a set of vehicle reporting trigger variables, such that a reporting entity reports based upon occurrence of a tuned variable.

Claims (13)

1. A system comprising:

a processor configured to:

detect an onboard request for vehicle-action reporting configuration issued from a device installed in a vehicle onboard diagnostic port;

responsive to the request, send a vehicle identifier to a configuration server;

receive a set of configuration data, from the server, representing tuned trigger variables and variable values for vehicle reporting, tuned to a specific vehicle identified by the identifier and tuned, for at least one variable and value associated with the at least one variable, based on an aftermarket addition identified by the vehicle;

use the configuration data to tune a set of vehicle reporting trigger variables, such that the device reports based upon occurrence of a tuned vehicle reporting trigger variable value;

detecting, via communication to the device over a vehicle bus, the occurrence of a variable value designated by the tuning as suitable for causing a report; and

reporting data, obtained from the vehicle bus, designated for reporting based on a variable for which the value was detected.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identifier includes a vehicle identification number (VIN).

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the identifier includes an electronic serial number (ESN).

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to send identification of the aftermarket part, along with the vehicle identifier.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein the identification of an aftermarket part is received from a user responsive to a request for identification of any aftermarket parts.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the tuned vehicle reporting trigger variables include a value for use when a temporary vehicle feature is engaged, and wherein the processor is configured to replace the reporting variable used when the feature is not engaged, with the value for use when the feature is engaged, responsive to engagement of the feature.
