Abstract

Batteries having different form factors and power tools that are capable of using such batteries are described. In some embodiments, a power tool may use batteries having a post form factor as well as batteries having a slide form factor.

Claims (55)

1. A battery for a power tool, the battery comprising:

a housing;

at least one battery cell in the housing; and

a plurality of electrical connectors that are electrically coupled to the at least one battery cell;

wherein the housing includes a plurality of tabs that define a channel and a plurality of openings to the channel;

wherein the plurality of openings are configured to permit a plurality of tabs of the power tool to pass between the plurality of tabs of the housing and into the channel; and

wherein the channel traverses the plurality of tabs of the housing to permit the plurality of tabs of the power tool to slide along the channel and to permit the plurality of electrical connectors of the battery to engage a plurality of electrical connectors of the power tool as the battery is slid into an engaged position.

2. The battery of claim 1 , wherein:

the housing further includes another plurality of tabs that define another channel and another plurality of openings to the another channel;

the another plurality of openings are configured to permit another plurality of tabs of the power tool to pass between the another plurality of tabs of the housing and into the another channel; and

the another channel traverses the another plurality of tabs of the housing to permit the another plurality of tabs of the power tool to slide along the another channel as the battery is slid into the engaged position.

3. The battery of claim 1 , further comprising at least one detent to engage the power tool and secure the battery to the power tool when the battery is slid into the engaged position.

4. The battery of claim 3 , further comprising at least one release button that disengages the at least one detent to permit disengaging the battery from the power tool.

5. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrical connectors of the battery comprises a plurality of female, electrical spade connectors that are configured to receive a plurality of male, electrical spade connectors of the power tool.

6. The battery of claim 1 , wherein:

the housing includes a plurality of connector openings;

the plurality of electrical connectors of the battery comprise a plurality of female, electrical connectors aligned with the plurality of connector openings in the housing; and

the plurality of tabs of the housing are configured to align the plurality of connector openings in the housing with a plurality of male, electrical connectors of the power tool to permit the plurality of female, electrical connectors to receive the plurality of male, electrical connectors as the battery is slid into the engaged position.

7. The battery of claim 1 , wherein a rear portion of the housing is configured to engage the power tool and provide a mechanical stop when the battery is in the engaged position.

8. A power tool, comprising:

at least one battery powered component; and

a battery compartment that includes:

a cavity to receive and guide a post portion of a post battery;

a plurality of first electrical connectors positioned toward a distal end of the cavity and configured to electrically couple the post battery to the at least one battery powered component when the post battery is engaged with the power tool;

a plurality of second electrical connectors positioned toward a proximal end of the cavity and configured to electrically couple a slide battery to the at least one battery powered component; and

a plurality of tabs that define a channel and a plurality of openings to the channel, wherein the plurality of openings are configured to permit a plurality of tabs of the slide battery to pass between the plurality of tabs of the battery compartment and into the channel, wherein the channel traverses the plurality of tabs of the battery compartment to permit the plurality of tabs of the slide battery to slide along the channel and engage a plurality of electrical connectors of the slide battery with the plurality of second electrical connectors of the battery compartment as the slide battery is slid into an engaged position.

9. The power tool of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of tabs of the power tool extend inwardly from a side of the battery compartment to form the channel between a base surface of the battery compartment and an upper surface of the plurality of tabs of the battery compartment such that the channel runs along the side of the battery compartment.

10. The power tool of claim 8 , wherein:

the battery compartment further includes another plurality of tabs that define another channel and another plurality of openings to the another channel;

the another plurality of openings are configured to permit another plurality of tabs of the slide battery to pass between the another plurality of tabs of the battery compartment and into the another channel; and

the another channel traverses the another plurality of tabs of the battery compartment to permit the another plurality of tabs of the slide battery to slide along the another channel as the slide battery is slid into the engaged position.

11. The power tool of claim 8 , further comprising at least one recess that receives a corresponding detent of the post battery and secures the post battery to the power tool when the post battery is in the engaged position.

12. The power tool of claim 8 , further comprising at least one recess that receives a corresponding detent of the slide battery and secures the slide battery to the power tool when the slide battery is slid into the engaged position.

13. The power tool of claim 8 , further comprising:

a power block that includes the plurality of second electrical connectors of the battery compartment; and

a spring that exerts a force against the slide battery via the power block as the slide battery is slid into the engaged position.

14. The power tool of claim 13 , further comprising:

at least one recess that receives a corresponding detent of the slide battery and secures the slide battery to the power tool when the slide battery is slid into the engaged position;

wherein the force exerted by the spring causes the slide battery to slide toward a disengaged position when the corresponding detent of the slide battery is released from the recess.

15. The power tool of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of second electrical connectors of the battery compartment comprises a plurality of male, electrical spade connectors that are configured to engage a plurality of female, electrical spade connectors of the slide battery.

16. The power tool of claim 8 , wherein one end of the channel includes another opening to permit receipt of corresponding tabs of the slide battery.

17. The power tool of claim 8 , further comprising:

a spring that exerts a force against the slide battery as the slide battery is slid into the engaged position; and

a detent configured to secure the slide battery in the engaged position;

wherein the force exerted by the spring causes the slide battery to slide toward a disengaged position when the detent is released.

18. An adapter for electrically connecting a slide battery to cavity configured to receive a post battery, the adapter comprising:

a post portion comprising a plurality of electrical contacts that are configured to electrically couple to a plurality of electrical contacts in the cavity when the post portion engages the cavity; and

a base portion comprising a plurality of electrical connectors that are electrically coupled to the plurality of electrical contacts of the post portion and a plurality of tabs that define a channel and a plurality of openings to the channel;

wherein the plurality of openings are configured to permit a plurality of tabs of the slide battery to pass between the plurality of tabs of the base portion and into the channel; and

wherein the channel traverses the plurality of tabs of the base portion to permit the plurality of tabs of the slide battery to slide along the channel and to permit the plurality of electrical connectors of the base portion to engage a plurality of electrical connectors of the slide battery as the slide battery is slid into an engaged position.

19. The adapter of claim 18 , wherein:

the base portion further includes another plurality of tabs that define another channel and another plurality of openings to the another channel;

the another plurality of openings are configured to permit another plurality of tabs of the slide battery to pass between the another plurality of tabs of the base portion and into the another channel; and

the another channel traverses the another plurality of tabs of the base portion to permit the another plurality of tabs of the slide battery to slide along the another channel as the slide battery is slid into the engaged position.

20. The adapter of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of electrical connectors of the slide battery comprises a plurality of female, electrical spade connectors that are configured to receive a plurality of male, electrical spade connectors of the base portion.
