Abstract

A system and method for detecting the amount or concentration of an analyte in a medium in living organism. The system may include an analyte sensor module and a transmitter module, which may be separate and distinct components. The analyte sensor module and transmitter module may be at different locations but connected by one or more transmission elements. The analyte sensor may include indicator elements configured to exhibit a detectable property based on the amount or concentration of the analyte in proximity to the indicator elements. The analyte sensor may include sensor elements configured to generate a data signal based on the detectable property exhibited by the indicator elements. The transmission elements may be configured to convey data signals generated by the sensor elements from the analyte sensor module to the transmitter module. The transmitter module may include an antenna.

Claims (30)

1. A system for detecting an amount or concentration of an analyte in vivo within a living organism, said system comprising:

A. an analyte sensor configured to be implanted, in vivo, within the living organism and comprising:

(1) an analyte indicator configured to exhibit a detectable property based on the amount or concentration of the analyte in proximity to the analyte indicator;

(2) one or more sensor elements configured to generate a data signal based on the detectable property exhibited by said analyte indicator; and

(3) a sensor housing encapsulating one or more of said one or more sensor elements;

B. a transmitter configured to be implanted within the living organism at a different location than said analyte sensor, said transmitter comprising an antenna configured to convey radio frequency signals, wherein the antenna is not encapsulated within the sensor housing; and

C. one or more transmission elements that tether said transmitter to said analyte sensor and are configured to convey the data signal generated by said one or more sensor elements from said analyte sensor to said transmitter.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an external reader including an antenna configured for inductive coupling with said antenna of said transmitter, said external reader being configured to receive data signals conveyed by said transmitter via the inductive coupling.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the external reader is configured to convey a power signal to said transmitter via the inductive coupling to generate power within said transmitter.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said one or more sensor elements comprise at least one light source and one or more photosensors configured to sense an optical emission from said indicator elements.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said transmission elements comprise at least one of a wire and a coaxial cable.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said antenna of said transmitter comprises an inductive coil.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more transmission elements are configured to transmit power from said transmitter to said analyte sensor for powering said one or more sensor elements, and the antenna is configured for receiving and conveying radio frequency signals.

8. A system for detecting an amount or concentration of an analyte in vivo within a living organism, said system comprising:

A. an analyte sensor configured to be implanted, in vivo, within the living organism and comprising:

(A1) an analyte indicator configured to exhibit a detectable property based on the amount or concentration of the analyte in proximity to the analyte indicator;

(A2) one or more sensor elements configured to generate a data signal based on the detectable property exhibited by said analyte indicator; and

(A3) a sensor housing encapsulating one or more of said one or more sensor elements;

B. a transmitter configured to be implanted within the living organism at a different location than said analyte sensor, said transmitter comprising:

(B1) an antenna configured to convey radio frequency signals; and

(B2) a transmitter housing encapsulating the antenna, wherein the transmitter housing is separate from the sensor housing; and

C. one or more transmission elements that tether said transmitter to said analyte sensor and are configured to convey the data signal generated by said one or more sensor elements from said analyte sensor to said transmitter.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the antenna is not encapsulated within the sensor housing.

10. A method for detecting an amount or concentration of an analyte in vivo within a living organism, said method comprising:

using one or more sensor elements of an analyte sensor implanted in vivo within the living organism to generate a data signal based on a detectable property exhibited by an analyte indicator of the analyte sensor, wherein the detectable property is based on the amount or concentration of the analyte in proximity to the analyte indicator, and a sensor housing of the analyte sensor encapsulates one or more of said one or more sensor elements;

using one or more transmission elements that tether a transmitter to said analyte sensor to convey the data signal generated by said one or more sensor elements from said analyte sensor to said transmitter, wherein the transmitter is implanted within the living organism at a different location than said analyte sensor; and

using an antenna of the transmitter to convey the data signal as one or more radio frequency signals, wherein a transmitter housing of the transmitter encapsulates at least the antenna, and the transmitter housing is separate from the sensor housing.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein a transmitter housing of the transmitter encapsulates at least the antenna.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising using an external reader including an antenna inductively coupled with said antenna of said transmitter to receive the data signal conveyed by said transmitter.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising using the external reader to convey a power signal to said transmitter.
