Abstract

A humeral guide is provided that has a first portion or member configured to be positioned on a portion of a proximal humerus. The first portion or member can be configured to rest in a complementary manner on the portion of the proximal humerus. The humeral guide can be configured with apertures defining trajectories through bone, the pin trajectories being diverging in some case and in some cases being selected to enhanced support. A second portion or member and a third portion or member of the humeral guide are configured to be positioned on first and second lateral portions of the humerus distal to a location intended for resection, e.g., between an anatomical neck and a distal end of the humerus. The second and third portions or members or portions are configured to rest in a complementary manner on the first and second lateral portions of the humerus. The humeral guide can be configured to avoid soft tissue between a bone facing side and the humerus. The humeral guide can have a removeable jig portion.

Claims (28)

1. A humeral guide, comprising:

a jig having a patient matched surface and a hole for a stabilization pin, wherein an orientation of the hole is patient matched;

a support portion including a resection surface;

a connection mechanism that connects the jig to the support portion and includes a projection on the support portion that is adapted to extend into an aperture of the jig such that the jig is releasable from the support portion; and

the stabilization pin adapted to be advanced through the hole, wherein

the orientation of the hole defines at least a minimum length of the stabilization pin traversing bone when the jig is placed in a preoperatively planned position and the stabilization pin is advanced through the hole and into the bone.

2. The humeral guide of claim 1 , wherein the jig comprises two holes, each hole defining an orientation, at least one of the orientations being patient matched, the at least two holes being arranged along non-parallel axes.

3. The humeral cutting guide of claim 1 , wherein the jig is configured to guide a guide pin through a resection plane of the humerus and into the cancellous bone distal thereof.

4. The humeral cutting guide of claim 3 , wherein the jig comprises a hole defining a patient matched orientation configured to guide further preparation of the humerus distal to a plane of resection of the humerus.

5. A humeral guide, comprising:

a jig having a patient matched surface and a hole for a stabilization pin, wherein an orientation of the hole is patient matched;

a support portion including a resection surface;

a connection mechanism that connects the jig to the support portion and includes a projection on the support portion that is adapted to extend into an aperture of the jig such that the jig is releasable from the support portion; and

the stabilization pin adapted to be advanced through the hole, wherein

the orientation of the hole provides a minimum cortical bone traverse when the jig is placed in a preoperatively planned position and the stabilization pin is advanced through the hole and into the bone.

6. The humeral guide of claim 5 , wherein the jig comprises two holes, each hole defining an orientation, at least one of the orientations being patient matched, the at least two holes being arranged along non-parallel axes.

7. The humeral cutting guide of claim 5 , wherein the jig is configured to guide a guide pin through a resection plane of the humerus and into the cancellous bone distal thereof.

8. The humeral cutting guide of claim 7 , wherein the jig comprises a hole defining a patient matched orientation configured to guide further preparation of the humerus distal to a plane of resection of the humerus.

9. A humeral guide, comprising:

a jig having a patient matched surface and a hole for a stabilization pin, wherein an orientation of the hole is patient matched;

a support portion including a resection surface;

a connection mechanism that connects the jig to the support portion and includes a projection on the support portion that is adapted to extend into an aperture of the jig such that the jig is releasable from the support portion; and

the stabilization pin adapted to be advanced through the hole, wherein

the orientation of the hole avoids a sub-cortical cyst traverse when the jig is placed in a preoperatively planned position and the stabilization pin is advanced through the hole and into the bone.

10. The humeral guide of claim 9 , wherein the jig comprises two holes, each hole defining an orientation, at least one of the orientations being patient matched, the at least two holes being arranged along non-parallel axes.

11. The humeral cutting guide of claim 9 , wherein the jig is configured to guide a guide pin through a resection plane of the humerus and into the cancellous bone distal thereof.

12. The humeral cutting guide of claim 11 , wherein the jig comprises a hole defining a patient matched orientation configured to guide further preparation of the humerus distal to a plane of resection of the humerus.

13. The humeral guide of claim 9 , wherein the jig provides a minimum clearance distance from a sub-cortical cyst to the stabilization pin when the jig is placed in a preoperatively planned position and the stabilization pin is advanced through the hole.
