Abstract

Ablation probe tips ( 108, 148, 320, 360 ) and physical and virtual stents ( 110 ) for use in tooth bud ablation procedures that result in tooth agenesis as well as tooth bud ablation methods are described herein.

Claims (49)

1. An ablation probe tip, said ablation probe tip for use in a tooth bud ablation procedure that results in tooth agenesis, said ablation probe tip for use with a stent, said ablation probe tip for use with an ablation probe unit, said ablation probe tip comprising:

(a) said ablation probe tip having a shaft, said shaft having an insertion end for inserting into a tooth bud and a connection end for connecting said ablation probe tip to said ablation probe unit;

(b) said ablation probe tip having a center of ablation;

(c) said ablation probe tip being guidable at a pre-defined angle when used in conjunction with said stent;

(d) said ablation probe tip being depth limited to a pre-defined depth;

(e) said ablation probe tip having a shaft inner conductor, shaft insulation surrounding said shaft inner conductor, a shaft outer shield surrounding said shaft insulation, a window defined in said shaft outer shield, a shaft outer cover surrounding said shaft outer shield and said window, and a reflector positioned between said window and said insertion end, said center of ablation positioned in said shaft inner conductor surrounded by said window; and

(f) said center of ablation being a focal area from which ablation means radiates through said window;

wherein said center of ablation is within said tooth bud when said ablation probe tip is guided at said pre-defined angle to said pre-defined depth.

2. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said center of ablation positioned between said insertion end and said connection end.

3. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , at least part of said ablation means is reflected from said reflector.

4. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said reflector selected from a group consisting of:

(a) a deposited reflector;

(b) a deposited metal reflector;

(c) a soldered reflector; and

(d) an electroplated reflector.

5. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said window being a gap window.

6. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said window being an air gap window.

7. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip is for at least partially ablating at least one tooth bud without ablating surrounding tissue.

8. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by at least one stop indicator to a pre-defined depth.

9. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by at least one stop indicator to a pre-defined depth, said at least one stop indicator being provided by the physical prevention of further progression of said ablation probe tip provided by the interaction of mechanical stop structure of said ablation probe tip and mechanical stop structure of said stent.

10. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by at least one stop indicator to a pre-defined depth, said at least one stop indicator being provided by a virtual stop marking on said display.

11. The ablation probe tip of claim 1 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by at least one stop indicator to a pre-defined depth, said at least one stop indicator being provided by an indicator selected from the group consisting of:

(a) a visual indicator;

(b) an audible indicator;

(c) a tactile indicator; and

(d) a combination of at least two indicators selected from (a)-(c).

12. An ablation probe tip, said ablation probe tip for use in a tooth bud ablation procedure that results in tooth agenesis, said ablation probe tip for use with an ablation probe unit, said ablation probe tip comprising:

(a) said ablation probe tip having a shaft, said shaft having an insertion end for inserting into a tooth bud and a connection end for connecting said ablation probe tip to said ablation probe unit;

(b) said ablation probe tip having a center of ablation between said insertion end and said connection end; and

(c) said ablation probe tip having a shaft inner conductor, shaft insulation surrounding said shaft inner conductor, a shaft outer shield surrounding said shaft insulation, a window defined in said shaft outer shield, a shaft outer cover surrounding said shaft outer shield and said window, and a reflector positioned between said window and said insertion end, said center of ablation positioned in said shaft inner conductor surrounded by said window;

wherein said center of ablation is a focal area from which ablation means radiates through said window, said center of ablation being positionable within said tooth bud.

13. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , said center of ablation positioned between said insertion end and said connection end.

14. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , at least part of said ablation means is reflected from said reflector.

15. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , said reflector selected from a group consisting of:

(a) a deposited reflector;

(b) a deposited metal reflector;

(c) a soldered reflector; and

(d) an electroplated reflector.

16. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , said window being a gap window.

17. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , said window being an air gap window.

18. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , said ablation probe tip is for at least partially ablating at least one tooth bud without ablating surrounding tissue.

19. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by at least one stop indicator to a pre-defined depth.

20. The ablation probe tip of claim 12 , said ablation probe tip being depth limited by at least one stop indicator to a pre-defined depth, said at least one stop indicator being provided by the physical prevention of further progression of said ablation probe tip provided by the interaction of mechanical stop structure of said ablation probe tip and mechanical stop structure of said stent.
