Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for depositing materials on both sides of a web while it passes a substantially vertical direction are provided. In particular embodiments, a web does not contact any hardware components during the deposition. A web may be supported before and after the deposition chamber but not inside the deposition chamber. At such support points, the web may be exposed to different conditions (e.g., temperature) than during the deposition. Also provided are substrates having materials deposited on both sides that may be fabricated by the methods and apparatuses.

Claims (17)

1. A composition comprising:

a web substrate having a first side and a second side; and

nanowires substrate-rooted to the web substrate surface on both the first side and the second side of the web substrate, wherein the nanowires are silicide nanowires and wherein the web substrate has a width of at least about 500 millimeters.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the web substrate is made of a material selected from the group consisting of copper, copper alloy, nickel, nickel alloy, and steel.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the web substrate has a thickness of between about 5 micrometers and 50 micrometers.

4. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising a second material coating the silicide nanowires.

5. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the second material comprises electrochemically active material.

6. The composition of claim 5 , wherein the electrochemically active material comprises at least one of lithium and amorphous silicon.

7. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the second material comprises battery electrolyte material.

8. The composition of claim 4 , wherein the second material comprises polymer binder.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the web substrate is cut.

10. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the second material comprises amorphous silicon.

11. The composition of claim 6 , wherein the second material comprises lithium.

12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the web substrate has a thickness of between about 5 micrometers and 30 micrometers.

13. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the web substrate surface comprises a metal and the silicide nanowires comprises a silicide of the metal.

14. The composition of claim 13 , wherein the metal is nickel and the silicide nanowires are nickel silicide nanowires.

15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the web substrate comprises a nickel foil or a nickel-coated foil.
