Abstract

A technique for improving wireless communication characteristics involving matching transmitter antenna patterns to receiver antenna patterns. In a specific implementation, the transmitter antenna pattern adapts to changing parameters, such as when a smartphone is initially held in a first orientation and is later held in a second orientation. Because the transmitter antenna patterns match the receiver antenna patterns, signal quality between stations improves. In some implementations, antennas are organized and mounted to maximize spatial diversity to cause peak gains in different directions.

Claims (51)

1. An antenna apparatus, comprising:

an antenna mounting structure;

a plurality of antenna devices circularly arranged on the antenna mounting structure with a clearance from each other, the plurality of antenna devices including a first subplurality of antenna devices and a second subplurality of antenna devices arranged in an interleaved manner,

the first subplurality of antenna devices having a first polarization and not having polarizations orthogonal to the first polarization, and the second subplurality of antenna devices having a second polarization different from the first polarization and not having polarizations orthogonal to the second polarization;

wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices and a fourth subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second, third and fourth subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization,

the fourth subplurality of antenna devices having a fourth polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the fourth polarization,

wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization, and the third polarization is orthogonal to the fourth polarization.

2. The antenna apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization.

3. The antenna apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second and third subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization.

4. The antenna apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second and third subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization, wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization, and the third polarization is orthogonal to neither the first nor the second polarization.

5. The antenna apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices and a fourth subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second, third and fourth subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization,

the fourth subplurality of antenna devices having a fourth polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the fourth polarization.

6. The antenna apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first subplurality of antenna devices includes three or more antenna devices, and the second subplurality of antenna devices includes three or more antenna devices.

7. The antenna apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a number of the first subplurality of antenna devices is equal to a number of the second subplurality of antenna devices.

8. A wireless network device comprising:

a control board including switching circuitry for network traffic;

an antenna apparatus including:

an antenna mounting structure;

a plurality of antenna devices circularly arranged on the antenna mounting structure with a clearance from each other, the plurality of antenna devices including a first subplurality of antenna devices and a second subplurality of antenna devices arranged in an interleaved manner,

the first subplurality of antenna devices having a first polarization and not having polarizations orthogonal to the first polarization, and the second subplurality of antenna devices having a second polarization different from the first polarization and not having polarizations orthogonal to the second polarization;

wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices and a fourth subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second, third and fourth subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization,

the fourth subplurality of antenna devices having a fourth polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the fourth polarization,

wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization, and the third polarization is orthogonal to the fourth polarization.

9. The wireless network device of claim 8 , wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization.

10. The wireless network device of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second and third subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization.

11. The wireless network device of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second and third subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization, wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization, and the third polarization is orthogonal to neither the first nor the second polarization.

12. The wireless network device of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second, third and fourth subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization,

the fourth subplurality of antenna devices having a fourth polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the fourth polarization.

13. The wireless network device of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices and a fourth subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second, third and fourth subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization,

the fourth subplurality of antenna devices having a fourth polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the fourth polarization,

wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization, and the third polarization is orthogonal to the fourth polarization.

14. The wireless network device of claim 8 , wherein the first subplurality of antenna devices includes three or more antenna devices, and the second subplurality of antenna devices includes three or more antenna devices.

15. The wireless network device of claim 8 , wherein a number of the first subplurality of antenna devices is equal to a number of the second subplurality of antenna devices.

16. A wireless network device comprising:

a means for mounting antenna devices;

a plurality of antenna devices circularly arranged on the means for mounting antenna devices with a clearance from each other, the plurality of antenna devices including a first subplurality of antenna devices and a second subplurality of antenna devices arranged in an interleaved manner,

the first subplurality of antenna devices having a first polarization and not having polarizations orthogonal to the first polarization, and the second subplurality of antenna devices having a second polarization different from the first polarization and not having polarizations orthogonal to the second polarization;

wherein the plurality of antenna devices further includes a third subplurality of antenna devices and a fourth subplurality of antenna devices, the first, second, third and fourth subpluralities of antenna devices being cyclically arranged,

the third subplurality of antenna devices having a third polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the third polarization,

the fourth subplurality of antenna devices having a fourth polarization different from the first and second polarizations and not having polarizations orthogonal to the fourth polarization,

wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization, and the third polarization is orthogonal to the fourth polarization.

17. The wireless network device of claim 16 , wherein the first polarization is orthogonal to the second polarization.
