Muzzleloader systems
View Patent ↗Muzzleloader systems include a pre-packaged propellant charge and primer for providing efficient loading and unloading of the muzzleloader. The muzzleloader accepts in the breech end the propellant containment vessel that abuts against a constriction portion with a reduced diameter portion. The propellant containment vessel having an end portion with a tapered surface that conforms to the constriction portion surface. A projectile is inserted in the muzzle end and seats against the constriction portion. The propellant containment vessel may be received in a removable breech plug. The constriction portion may be part of the breech plug or a separate component secured in the barrel by way of the breech plug. The containment vessel further comprises a primer mechanism that may be integrated into the proximal end of the containment vessel.
1. A muzzleloader propellant cartridge for loading in a muzzleloader having a barrel with a breech chamber open rearwardly, a constriction portion at a forward end of the breech chamber, and a projectile bore portion with a bore forward of the constriction portion, the muzzleloader propellant cartridge without a projectile therein, the propellant cartridge sized for being received by the breech end of the muzzleloader, the muzzleloader propellant cartridge comprising:
a cartridge cup portion comprising a polymer, having a forwardmost disk portion defining a blunt forward end of the propellant cartridge, and having a unitary wall portion extending rearwardly of the disk portion;
a polymer head portion having a flange portion and a unitary connecting wall portion engaged with the wall portion of the cup portion, the cartridge cup portion and polymer head portion defining an interior, the head portion having a central opening for receiving a primer; and
propellant filling the interior.
2. The system of claim 1 wherein the cup portion has a tubular portion and in cross section has a U-shape.
3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge cup portion has a forward peripheral conical taper at the disk portion for being received by the constriction portion of the muzzleloader.
4. A muzzleloader firing system comprising a muzzleloader, a muzzleloader propellant cartridge for loading in a breech end of the muzzleloader, and a projectile for loading in a muzzle end of the muzzleloader,
the muzzleloader having a barrel with a breech chamber open rearwardly, a constriction portion at a forward end of the breech chamber, and a projectile bore portion with a bore forward of the constriction portion, the muzzleloader propellant cartridge without a projectile therein, the propellant cartridge sized for being received by the breech end of the muzzleloader, the muzzleloader propellant cartridge comprising:
a forwardly positioned cartridge cup portion comprising a polymer and having a closed forward end and a wall portion extending rearwardly, the closed end unitary with the wall portion, a head portion having a flange portion and a connecting wall portion extending forwardly and engaged with the wall portion of the cup portion, the head portion having a central opening for receiving a primer in the head portion; and
propellant filling the interior and extending to the closed end.
5. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 4 wherein the projectile comprises a bullet body and a cup is engaged on the bullet body.
6. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 4 , wherein a primer is received in the recess for the primer.
7. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 4 wherein the surface of the constriction portion facing the muzzle end is perpendicular to an axis of the barrel of the muzzleloader.
8. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 4 wherein the constriction portion is a singular piece and is removable from the muzzleloader.
9. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 4 , wherein when the propellant cartridge and projectile are loaded into the muzzleloader, a forwardly most portion of the cup portion of the propellant cartridge engages the projectile.
10. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 4 , wherein the cup portion of the propellant cartridge fits inside the connecting wall portion of the head portion.
11. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 9 , wherein the cup portion of the propellant cartridge fits inside the connecting wall portion of the head portion.
12. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 11 , wherein the head portion is formed of a polymer.
13. The muzzleloader firing system of claim 11 , wherein the wall portion of the cup portion extends most of a length of the propellant cartridge.
14. A muzzleloader system comprising a muzzleloader, a muzzleloader propellant cartridge for loading in the muzzleloader, and a projectile for loading in a muzzle end of the muzzleloader
the muzzleloader having a barrel with a breech chamber open rearwardly, a constriction portion at a forward end of the breech chamber, and a projectile bore portion with a bore forward of the constriction portion, the breech chamber having a diameter greater than the diameter of the bore of the projectile bore portion, the muzzleloader propellant cartridge without a projectile therein, the propellant cartridge sized for being received by the breech end of the muzzleloader;
the muzzleloader propellant cartridge having, a rearward head portion having a flange portion, a wall portion extending forwardly defining an interior, a hermetically sealed forward end, and propellant in the interior of the propellant cartridge, the head portion having a central opening for receiving a primer in the head portion, wherein when the propellant cartridge is loaded in the breech chamber, the propellant cartridge extending to the constriction portion.
15. The muzzleloader system of claim 14 , wherein the rearward head portion of the propellant cartridge is formed of a polymer.
16. The muzzleloader system of claim 14 , wherein the constriction portion is inserted as a separate piece into the breech chamber and that seats at a forwardmost position in the breech chamber.
17. The muzzleloader propellant cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising the muzzleloader, and further comprising a projectile for loading in a muzzle end of the muzzleloader, the projectile being received forward of the constriction portion.
18. The muzzleloader propellant cartridge, the muzzleloader, and the projectile of claim 17 , wherein when the propellant cartridge and projectile are loaded into the muzzleloader, a forwardly most portion of the cup portion of the propellant cartridge engages the projectile.
19. The muzzleloader propellant cartridge, the muzzleloader, and the projectile of claim 17 , wherein the cup portion in cross section has a U-shape.
20. The muzzleloader propellant cartridge, the muzzleloader, and the projectile of claim 17 , wherein the cartridge cup portion has a forward peripheral conical taper at the disk portion for being received by the constriction portion of the muzzleloader.
