Abstract

Various surgical devices having integrated means of illuminating a surgical field are provided. Retractors, cannulas, suction devices and the like are disclosed having integrated optical waveguides coupleable to external lighting sources. The waveguides feature cladding layers configured to enhance transmission efficiency.

Claims (38)

1. A surgical device for illuminating a surgical field comprising:

an optical waveguide comprising:

a light input portion configured to receive light from a light source,

a light output portion configured to output the light from the optical waveguide to a surgical field, wherein the light output portion has a rectangular cross-sectional shape, and

a neck portion configured to transmit the light from the light input portion to the light output portion, wherein the neck portion is curved to define a bend between the light input portion and the light output portion; and

at least one optical cladding layer disposed on at least a portion of an exterior surface of the neck portion of the optical waveguide,

wherein the at least one optical cladding layer is not disposed on the light output portion of the optical waveguide, and

wherein the light output portion is proximal of a distalmost end of the optical waveguide.

2. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one optical cladding layer has a thickness of at least 350 nanometers.

3. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one optical cladding layer comprises at least one material selected from a group consisting of: a fluoro acrylate, a fluoro methacrylate, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

4. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one optical cladding layer comprises an index of refraction greater than 1.0 and less than an index of refraction of the optical waveguide.

5. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein, at the bend, the neck portion has a rectangular cross-sectional shape.

6. The surgical device of claim 5 , wherein the light input portion has a cylindrical shape.

7. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein the neck portion has (i) a square cross-sectional shape at an transition between the light input portion and the neck portion, and (ii) a rectangular cross-sectional shape at a transition between the neck portion and the light output portion.

8. The surgical device of claim 1 , further comprising a collar surrounding the light input portion, wherein the at least one optical cladding layer extends from the collar to the light output portion.

9. The surgical device of claim 8 , wherein the collar surrounds the light input portion of the optical waveguide such that an air gap is defined between the collar and the optical waveguide.

10. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein the light output portion comprises a plurality of facets.

11. The surgical device of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a fiber optic cable.

12. A surgical device, comprising:

an optical waveguide comprising:

a light input portion configured to receive light from a light source,

a light output portion configured to output the light from the optical waveguide to a surgical field, and

a neck portion configured to transmit the light from the light input portion to the light output portion, wherein the neck portion is curved to define a bend between the light input portion and the light output portion;

at least one optical cladding layer disposed on at least a portion of an exterior surface of the neck portion of the optical waveguide; and

a surgical retractor comprising a slot configured to receive the optical waveguide, wherein the optical waveguide is disposed in the slot of the surgical retractor such that an air gap is defined between a rear surface of the optical waveguide and the surgical retractor,

wherein the at least one optical cladding layer is disposed on a front surface of the neck portion,

wherein the front surface is opposite the rear surface,

wherein the at least one optical cladding layer is not disposed on (i) the light output portion of the optical waveguide and (ii) the rear surface of the optical waveguide, and

wherein the light output portion is (i) on the front surface of the optical waveguide and (ii) proximal of a distalmost end of the optical waveguide.

13. The surgical device of claim 12 , wherein the light output portion has a rectangular cross-sectional shape.

14. The surgical device of claim 13 , wherein the neck portion has a rectangular cross-sectional shape.

15. The surgical device of claim 14 , wherein the light input portion has a cylindrical shape.

16. The surgical device of claim 12 , wherein the neck portion has (i) a square cross-sectional shape at an transition between the light input portion and the neck portion, and (ii) a rectangular cross-sectional shape at a transition between the neck portion and the light output portion.

17. The surgical device of claim 12 , further comprising a collar surrounding the light input portion, wherein the at least one optical cladding layer extends from the collar to the light output portion.

18. The surgical device of claim 17 , wherein the collar surrounds the light input portion of the optical waveguide such that an air gap is defined between the collar and the optical waveguide.

19. The surgical device of claim 12 , wherein the optical waveguide has a width defined by a dimension between a first lateral side and a second lateral side,

wherein the width of the neck portion is less than the width of the light output portion.

20. The surgical device of claim 12 , wherein the light output portion comprises a plurality of facets.
