Abstract

An apparatus is disclosed for capturing image information. The apparatus includes a waveguide having opposed planar input and output faces. A diffractive optical element (DOE) is formed across the waveguide. The DOE is configured to couple a portion of the light passing through the waveguide into the waveguide. The light coupled into the waveguide is directed via total internal reflection to an exit location on the waveguide. The apparatus further includes a light sensor having an input positioned adjacent the exit location of the waveguide to capture light exiting therefrom and generate output signals corresponding thereto. A processor determines the angle and position of the coupled light with respect to the input face of the waveguide based on the output signals.

Claims (26)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a processor;

a wearable head device including a transmissive display comprising:

a first waveguide having:

a planar input face; and

a planar output face disposed opposite the planar input face, the output face having an exit location;

a first diffractive optical element (DOE) formed across the first waveguide, the first DOE configured to couple first light into the first waveguide and direct the first light via total internal reflection to the exit location; and

a light sensor configured to generate an output signal corresponding to light at the exit location,

wherein:

the processor is configured to adjust an angle and a position of the light sensor with respect to the exit location, and

the processor is further configured to execute a rendering engine to generate an output corresponding to the first light, and

whererin the output of the rendering engine comprises a representation of a plurality of polar coordinate pixels in polar form.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light sensor comprises a scanning fiber.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to convert the plurality of polar coordinate pixels to a plurality of corresponding rectangular coordinate pixels.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein converting the plurality of polar coordinate pixels to a plurality of corresponding rectangular coordinate pixels comprises pre-computing a relationship between a rectangular coordinate pixel and an associated polar coordinate pixel projection.

5. A method comprising:

receiving an output of a rendering engine, the output corresponding to a first light; coupling, via a first diffractive optical element (DOE), the first light into a first waveguide of a transmissive display of a wearable head device, the first waveguide having opposed planar input and output faces, the first DOE configured to direct the first light via total internal reflection to an exit location of the output face;

capturing, via a light sensor, light at the exit location; and

generating an output signal corresponding to the light captured via the light sensor;

wherein:

the first DOE is formed across the first waveguide, and

an angle and a position of the light sensor with respect to the exit location are movable and controllable by a processor, and

wherein the outer of the rendering engine comprises a representation of a plurality of the polar coordinate pixels in polar form.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the light sensor comprises a scanning fiber.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising converting the plurality of polar coordinate pixels to a plurality of corresponding rectangular coordinate pixels.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein converting the plurality of polar coordinate pixels to a plurality of corresponding rectangular coordinate pixels comprises pre-computing a relationship between a rectangular coordinate pixel and an associated polar coordinate pixel projection.
