Abstract

A controllable device, such as a set top box, responds to a transmission received from a one of a plurality of controlling devices of differing capabilities by entering into a one of a plurality of operating modes wherein the one of the plurality of operating modes entered into corresponds to the capabilities of the controlling device from which the transmission originated.

Claims (23)

1. A system, comprising:

a controllable device; and

a plurality of different controlling devices;

wherein the controllable device responds to a received transmission originating from a one of the plurality of controlling devices by attempting to determine an identity of the one of the plurality of controlling devices from which the received transmission originated and, when the identity of the one of the plurality of controlling devices is capable of being determined, by using the determined identity to enter into a one of a plurality of different controllable device operating modes wherein each one of the plurality of different controllable device operating modes has been associated within the controllable device to the determined identity and, when the identity of the one of the plurality of controlling devices is incapable of being determined, by entering into a default one of the plurality of controllable device operating modes.

The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different controllable device operating modes comprises a plurality of different graphical user interface operating modes wherein each of the plurality of different graphical user interface operating modes has a unique plurality of graphical user interface elements that are selectable via use of the corresponding one of the plurality of controlling devices.

3. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different controllable device operating modes comprises a plurality of different controllable device audio and/or video input and/or output operating modes.

4. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different controllable device operating modes comprises a plurality of different volume output operating modes.

5. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the controllable device comprises a set top box.

6. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one of the plurality of controlling devices transmits data indicative of its identity in a transmission intended to control at least one functional operation of the controllable device.

7. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one of the plurality of controlling devices transmits data indicative of its identity in a transmission intended to control at least one functional operation of a further controllable device.

8. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one of the plurality of controlling devices transmits data indicative of its identity in response to the one of the plurality of controlling devices detecting that it has been picked up by a user.

9. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one of the plurality of controlling devices communicates with the controllable device via use of an infrared protocol.

10. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one of the plurality of controlling devices communicates with the controllable device via use of a radio frequency protocol.

11. A controllable device, comprising:

a processing device; and

a memory in which is stored instructions wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, cause the controllable device to:

respond to a transmission received from a one of a plurality of controlling devices by attempting to determine an identity of the one of the plurality of controlling devices from which the received transmission originated and, when the identity of the one of the plurality of controlling devices is capable of being determined, by using the determined identity to cause the controllable device enter into a one of a plurality of different controllable device operating modes wherein each one of the plurality of different controllable device operating modes has been associated within the memory to the determined identity and, when the identity of the one of the plurality of controlling devices is incapable of being determined, by causing the controlling device to enter into a default one of the plurality of controllable device operating modes.

The controllable device as recited in claim 11 , wherein the plurality of different controllable device operating modes comprises a plurality of different graphical user interface operating modes wherein each of the plurality of different graphical user interface operating modes has a unique plurality of graphical user interface elements that are selectable via use of the corresponding one of the plurality of controlling devices.

13. The controllable device as recited in claim 11 , wherein the plurality of different controllable device operating modes comprises a plurality of different controllable device audio and/or video input and/or output operating modes.

14. The controllable device as recited in claim 11 , wherein the plurality of different controllable device operating modes comprises a plurality of different volume output operating modes.

15. The controllable device as recited in claim 11 , wherein the controllable device comprises a set top box.

16. The controllable device as recited in claim 11 , wherein the one of the plurality of controlling devices communicates with the controllable device via use of an infrared protocol.

17. The system as recited in claim 11 , wherein the one of the plurality of controlling devices communicates with the controllable device via use of a radio frequency protocol.
