Abstract

Example embodiments of the present invention relate to a method, a system, and a computer program product for creating a dynamically composed compute node. The method includes receiving an application characteristic and generating an infrastructure allocation request according to the application characteristic. The infrastructure allocation request then may be forwarded to a management system associated with a disaggregated infrastructure.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request to provide functionality of a given application in a disaggregated infrastructure system, the request comprising a set of resource requirements including at least one resource requirement specified by a user that is independent of one or more resources requirements specified by the given application;

generating an infrastructure allocation request specifying a set of hardware resources for a given dynamically composed compute node configured to provide the functionality of the given application in the disaggregated infrastructure system, the set of hardware resources being selected from a pool of hardware resources in communication with a compute fabric of the disaggregated infrastructure system;

determining a positioning of the given dynamically composed compute node within the disaggregated infrastructure system based at least in part on available resources in the disaggregated infrastructure system, the set of resource requirements, and positioning of one or more other dynamically composed compute nodes in the disaggregated infrastructure system that provide functionality for one or more other applications related to the given application; and

forwarding the infrastructure allocation request and the determined positioning to a management system associated with the disaggregated infrastructure system to instantiate the given dynamically composed compute node at the determined positioning;

wherein the method is performed by at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more resource requirements specified by the given application comprise a set of minimum resource requirements required to run the given application.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the at least one resource requirement specified by the user comprises at least one of a minimum and a maximum set of resource requirements to be utilized for the given dynamically composed compute node that is independent of the minimum resource requirements required to run the given application.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the request further comprises at least one application characteristic for the given application.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the at least one application characteristic for the given application comprises a relationship of the given application to a given value chain.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein determining the positioning of the given dynamically composed compute node within the disaggregated infrastructure system is based at least in part on positioning of at least one other application that has a relationship to the given value chain.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein generating the infrastructure allocation request comprises selecting the set of hardware resources subject to one or more quotas associated with the given value chain.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein generating the infrastructure allocation request comprises:

determining one or more functional service profiles for the functionality provided by the given application;

selecting, for each of the determined functional service profiles, a set of unit of work attributes for designated types of hardware resources and a set of variability of usage attributes for the designated types of hardware resources; and

utilizing the set of unit work attributes and the set of variability of usage attributes to select the set of hardware resources for creating the given dynamically composed compute node.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein determining the one or more functional service profiles is based at least in part on a mapping of one or more application characteristics of the given application to a table of functional service profile attributes.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the one or more application characteristics comprises at least one element of a given value chain to which the given application belongs.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the pool of hardware resources in communication with the compute fabric of the disaggregated infrastructure system comprises one or more processing resources, one or more memory resources, one or more networking resources, and one or more storage resources.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the pool of hardware resources comprises a set of enclosures each comprising a set of hardware resources including one or more central processing units, memory, networking resources and storage.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the given dynamically composed compute node comprises at least a first hardware resource selected from a first one of the set of enclosures and at least a second hardware resource selected from a second one of the set of enclosures.

14. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory processor-readable storage medium having stored therein program code of one or more software programs, wherein the program code when executed by at least one processing device causes said at least one processing device:

to receive a request to provide functionality of a given application in a disaggregated infrastructure system, the request comprising a set of resource requirements including at least one resource requirement specified by a user that is independent of one or more resources requirements specified by the given application;

to generate an infrastructure allocation request specifying a set of hardware resources for a given dynamically composed compute node configured to provide the functionality of the given application in the disaggregated infrastructure system, the set of hardware resources being selected from a pool of hardware resources in communication with a compute fabric of the disaggregated infrastructure system;

to determine a positioning of the given dynamically composed compute node within the disaggregated infrastructure system based at least in part on available resources in the disaggregated infrastructure system, the set of resource requirements, and positioning of one or more other dynamically composed compute nodes in the disaggregated infrastructure system that provide functionality for one or more other applications related to the given application; and

to forward the infrastructure allocation request and the determined positioning to a management system associated with the disaggregated infrastructure system to instantiate the given dynamically composed compute node at the determined positioning.

15. The computer program product of claim 14 wherein the request further comprises at least one application characteristic for the given application, the at least one application characteristic for the given application comprises a relationship of the given application to a given value chain.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 wherein determining the positioning of the given dynamically composed compute node within the disaggregated infrastructure system is based at least in part on positioning of at least one other application that has a relationship to the given value chain.

17. The computer program product of claim 15 wherein generating the infrastructure allocation request comprises selecting the set of hardware resources subject to one or more quotas associated with the given value chain.

18. An apparatus comprising:

at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory;

the at least one processing device being configured:

to receive a request to provide functionality of a given application in a disaggregated infrastructure system, the request comprising a set of resource requirements including at least one resource requirement specified by a user that is independent of one or more resources requirements specified by the given application;

to generate an infrastructure allocation request specifying a set of hardware resources for a given dynamically composed compute node configured to provide the functionality of the given application in the disaggregated infrastructure system, the set of hardware resources being selected from a pool of hardware resources in communication with a compute fabric of the disaggregated infrastructure system;

to determine a positioning of the given dynamically composed compute node within the disaggregated infrastructure system based at least in part on available resources in the disaggregated infrastructure system, the set of resource requirements, and positioning of one or more other dynamically composed compute nodes in the disaggregated infrastructure system that provide functionality for one or more other applications related to the given application; and

to forward the infrastructure allocation request and the determined positioning to a management system associated with the disaggregated infrastructure system to instantiate the given dynamically composed compute node at the determined positioning.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the request further comprises at least one application characteristic for the given application, the at least one application characteristic for the given application comprises a relationship of the given application to a given value chain.
