Abstract

Distributed systems, controllers and methods for processing information from a plurality of devices are provided. A distributed system includes a plurality of devices distributed in an environment. Each device has at least a communication capability for interchanging information with others of the devices and/or with a communication system. Each of at least some of the devices has one or more sensors for acquiring sensor data related to the environment proximate to the device. At least one of the communication system or one or more of the devices is configured as a controller configured to: select a subset of devices from among the plurality of devices, receive information based on the acquired sensor data of the selected subset, and combine the received information from the selected subset to determine a characteristic of the environment proximate to one or more of the devices.

Claims (34)

1. A system comprising:

a device among a plurality of devices distributed in an environment;

wherein the device is configured as a controller, wherein the controller performs operations comprising:

selecting a subset of devices from among the plurality of devices for acquiring sensor data;

receiving information based on the sensor data acquired by the selected subset of devices;

determining a characteristic of the environment based on aggregating the information, wherein the environment is proximate to at least one device in the subset of devices; and

adjusting a manner in which the subset of devices operate based on the characteristic of the environment, a context associated with the characteristic of the environment, and the information.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise configuring the subset of devices based on a triggering event.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise determining a location of the at least one device of the subset of devices.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise selecting the subset of devices based on a predetermined characteristic of the environment.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise determining whether the subset of devices should be adjusted based on the characteristic of the environment.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise adjusting a configuration of the subset of devices based on the characteristic of the environment.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise adjusting a selection of the subset of devices based on the characteristic of the environment.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise detecting a keyword in the information, and wherein the operations further comprise activating a sensor based on the keyword to confirm an event associated with the keyword.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise determining a hot spot of activity based on the information, and wherein the operations further comprise activating a device in a vicinity of the hot spot to obtain further information associated with the hot spot.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise generating an alert based on the information, the characteristic of the environment, or a combination thereof.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise detecting a track of an audio source in the environment.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise tracking activity of a user of at least one of the plurality of devices.

13. A method, comprising:

selecting a subset of devices from among a plurality of devices for acquiring sensor data, wherein the subset of devices are in an environment, wherein the selecting is performed by utilizing a processor of a controller of at least one device from among the plurality of devices;

receiving information based on the sensor data acquired by the selected subset of devices;

determining a characteristic of the environment based on aggregating the information, wherein the environment is proximate to at least one device in the subset of devices; and

adjusting a manner in which the subset of devices operate based on the characteristic of the environment, a context associated with the characteristic of the environment, and the information.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising determining a position of each device of the plurality of devices.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising detecting a non-speech acoustic event based on the information, the characteristic of the environment, or a combination thereof.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising detecting an event based on the information, the characteristic of the environment, or a combination thereof, and further comprising activating at least one device of the plurality of devices in a vicinity of the event.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising predicting a sequence of events, a set of events, or a combination thereof, based on the information, the characteristic of the environment, or a combination thereof.

18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising determining, based on a keyword detected in the information, a topic associated with the sensor data.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising assessing a topic of interest for a user based on the topic.

20. A computer-readable medium comprising instructions, which, when loaded and executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations, the operations comprising:

selecting a subset of devices from among a plurality of devices for acquiring sensor data, wherein the subset of devices are in an environment;

receiving information based on the sensor data acquired by the selected subset of devices;

determining a characteristic of the environment based on aggregating the information, wherein the environment is proximate to at least one device in the subset of devices; and

modifying a manner in which the subset of devices operate based on the characteristic of the environment, a context associated with the characteristic of the environment, and the information.
