Abstract

A femur plate is provided, the femur plate comprising a first end portion anatomically pre-formed to conform to a trochanter region of the femur and a second end portion anatomically pre-formed to conform to a condyle region of the femur, wherein the second end portion comprises at least one first opening configured to receive a bone fastener. The femur plate further comprises an elongate shaft extending from the first end portion to the second end portion, the elongate shaft comprising at least one second opening configured to receive a bone fastener. Furthermore, a periprosthetic implant system comprising the femur plate and a method of implanting the femur plate are provided.

Claims (38)

1. A femur plate comprising:

a first end portion anatomically pre-formed to conform to a convex surface of a greater trochanter of a femur;

a second end portion anatomically pre-formed to conform to a convex surface of a lateral condyle of the femur, the second end portion comprising at least one first opening configured to receive a bone fastener; and

an elongate shaft portion extending from the first end portion to the second end portion the elongate shaft portion comprising at least one second opening configured to receive a bone fastener.

2. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein at least one third opening is arranged in the first end portion of the femur plate to receive a bone fastener for insertion into a femur neck.

3. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein the first end portion of the femur plate comprises a tapering tip that extends upwardly from the elongate shaft portion to conform to the trochanter region.

4. The femur plate of claim 3 , wherein the third opening is centrally located in the tip.

5. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein the first end portion comprises a hook or spike configured to be inserted into trochanter bone.

6. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein the first end portion comprises at least one channel configured to receive a surgical cable, wherein the at least one channel extends generally perpendicularly to a longitudinal extension of the first end portion.

7. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein multiple first openings are arranged in the second end portion of the femur plate to each receive a bone fastener for insertion into the lateral condyle.

8. The femur plate of claim 7 , wherein centers of the multiple first openings generally lie on an oval.

9. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein the second end portion of the femur plate is club-shaped and angled laterally relative to a longitudinal extension of the elongate shaft portion towards the lateral condyle.

10. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft portion of the femur plate comprises a first shaft region with a center line, and wherein centers of two second openings in the first shaft region lie on opposing sides of the center line of the first shaft region.

11. The femur plate of claim 10 , wherein the second openings in the first shaft region are arranged to receive bone fasteners for bi-cortical fixation.

12. The femur plate of claim 10 , wherein the centers of the two second openings in the first shaft region lie on a first line intersecting the center line of the first shaft region at an angle of approximately 90°.

13. The femur plate of claim 10 , wherein the first shaft region comprises four second openings having centers that define a rectangle that is intersected by the center line of the first shaft region.

14. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft portion of the femur plate comprises a second shaft region with a center line, and wherein centers of two second openings in the second shaft region lie on opposing sides of the center line of the second shaft region.

15. The femur plate of claim 14 , wherein the second openings in the second shaft region are arranged to receive bone fasteners for at least one of mono-cortical and bi-cortical fixation.

16. The femur plate of claim 14 , wherein the two second openings in the second shaft region on opposing sides of the center line of the second shaft region are not centered on a second line intersecting the center line of the second shaft region.

17. The femur plate of claim 14 , wherein the first shaft region is arranged between the first end portion and the second shaft region.

18. The femur plate of claim 14 , wherein the elongate shaft of the femur plate comprises a first shaft region with a center line, and wherein a first average distance of the second openings in the first shaft region to the center line of the first shaft region is larger than a second average distance of the second openings in the second shaft region to the center line of the second shaft region.

19. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein at least one second opening in an implanted state of the femur plate runs obliquely from an upper plate surface to a bone contacting plate surface towards a patient knee.

20. The femur plate of claim 19 , wherein the elongate shaft of the femur plate comprises a second shaft region with a center line and wherein the at least one oblique second opening is located in a third shaft region that is arranged between the second shaft region and the second end portion of the femur plate.

21. The femur plate of claim 20 , wherein the third shaft region comprises a center line, and wherein the at least one oblique second opening has a center that lies on the center line of the third shaft region.

22. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft of the femur plate comprises a first shaft region with a center line, and the elongate shaft of the femur plate comprises a second shaft region with a center line and, further comprising at least one of:

a first elongate hole extending along the center line of the first shaft region in a portion of the first shaft region that faces the second shaft region; and

a second elongate hole extending along the center line of the third shaft region in a portion of the third shaft region that faces the second shaft region.

23. The femur plate of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the at least one first opening and the at least one second opening comprises:

a locking structure for locking a bone fastener received through that opening at a selected angle to the femur plate.

24. A method of implanting a femur plate comprising:

applying a first end portion of the femur plate to a greater trochanter of a femur, the first end portion anatomically pre-formed to conform to a convex surface of the greater trochanter;

attaching a second end portion of the femur plate to a lateral condyle of the femur by inserting a second bone fastener through a first opening in the second end portion, the second end portion being anatomically pre-formed to conform to a convex surface of the lateral condyle; and

attaching an elongate shaft extending from the first end portion to the second end portion to bone by inserting a third bone fastener through a second opening in the elongate shaft.

25. The method of claim 24 , further comprising:

attaching the first end portion of the femur plate to the greater trochanter by inserting a first bone fastener through a third opening in the first end portion.
