Abstract

The present disclosure relates to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods comprising (i) obtaining a baseline chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI image of a patient, (ii) administering an effective amount of a non-nutritive sweetener to the patient, and (iii) obtaining one or more test CEST MRI image of the patient subsequent to the administering step (ii); wherein the step (i) and (iii) acquisition parameters are substantially the same. The non-nutritive sweetener may include a natural or artificial sugar alcohol, polyol, or combinations or derivatives thereof.

Claims (20)

1. An imaging method, comprising:

(i) administering an effective amount of a non-nutritive sweetener, wherein the non-nutritive sweetener comprises aspartame, neotame, acesulfame, sucralose, cyclamate, saccharin, stevioside, rebaudioside, steviol, or combinations or derivatives thereof, to a patient; and

(ii) subsequent to administering step (i), obtaining one or more images of a tissue of the patient where the non-nutritive sweetener has accumulated, the one or more images being derived from the presence of the non-nutritive sweetener in the tissue.

2. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method, comprising:

(i) obtaining a baseline chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI image of a patient;

(ii) administering an effective amount of a non-nutritive sweetener to said patient wherein the non-nutritive sweetener comprises aspartame, neotame, acesulfame, sucralose, cyclamate, saccharin, stevioside, rebaudioside, steviol, or combinations or derivatives thereof; and

(iii) subsequent to the administration of step (ii), obtaining one or more test CEST MRI images of a tissue of the patient where the non-nutritive sweetener has accumulated wherein the step (i) and (iii) acquisition parameters are substantially the same and the one or more test CEST MRI images being derived from the presence of the non-nutritive sweetener in the tissue.

3. The magnetic resonance imaging method of claim 2 , further comprising:

(iv) comparing the baseline CEST MRI image to at least one test CEST MRI image to obtain a final image.

4. The magnetic resonance imaging method of claim 2 , wherein step

(i) further comprises obtaining a baseline conventional MRI image of said patient.

5. The magnetic resonance imaging method of claim 2 , wherein step

(iii) further comprises obtaining one or more test conventional MRI images of said patient.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein said non-nutritive sweetener accumulates in abnormal tissues.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said abnormal tissue is neoplastic tissue, inflamed issue, ischemic tissue, degenerated tissue, or fibrotic tissue.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein said non-nutritive sweetener accumulates in abnormal tissues at a higher rate than in normal tissue.

9. The imaging method of claim 1 wherein the non-nutritive sweetener is sucralose.

10. The imaging method of claim 1 , further comprising measuring an accumulation of the non-nutritive sweetener in an abnormal body tissue.

11. The imaging method of claim 1 , further comprising measuring a rate of accumulation of the non-nutritive sweetener in an abnormal body tissue.

12. The imaging method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more images are magnetic resonance images.
