Abstract

An apparatus arranged to heat smokable material to volatilize at least one component of said smokable material is described. An example of the apparatus includes a housing for receiving smokable material; and at least one heater arranged within the housing for heating smokable material removably received within the housing in use. The heater has first and second ends and a hollow central portion in which smokable material is received in use, and is formed from a sheet which is rolled into a tube and sealed along its length to prevent air entering or leaving the heater other than through at least one of the first and second ends.

Claims (18)

1. An apparatus arranged to heat smokable material to volatilize at least one component of the smokable material, the apparatus comprising:

a housing for receiving smokable material, the housing having control circuitry and a power source located therein; and

at least one heater arranged within the housing for heating smokable material removably received within the housing in use, the heater having a first end and a second end, and a hollow central portion in which smokable material is removably received in use, wherein: the heater is formed from a sheet which is rolled into a tube and sealed along its length by adhesion to prevent air entering or leaving the heater other than through at least one of the first end or the second end; and an air flow path through the hollow central portion of the heater is isolated from the control circuitry and the power source to prevent airflow through the hollow central portion of the heater from passing to the control circuitry and the power source.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sheet comprises a first plastics layer.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the first plastics layer is a polyimide layer.

4. The apparatus according to claim 2 , further comprising at least one electrically conductive track on the first plastics layer and which provides a heating element of the heater.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , comprising a second plastics layer on the electrically conductive track such that the electrically conductive track is between the first plastics layer and the second plastics layer.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the heater is a thin film heater.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a heat insulator surrounding the heater for reducing heat loss from the heater to an exterior of the apparatus.

8. A method of forming a heater for apparatus arranged to heat smokable material to volatilize at least one component of the smokable material, the method comprising:

rolling a sheet into a hollow tube having a first end and a second end and a hollow central portion for smokable material to be removably received in use;

sealing the tube along its length by adhesion so that in use, air is prevented from entering or leaving the heater other than through at least one of the first end or the second end; and

locating the heater, control circuitry and a power source within a housing of apparatus arranged to heat smokable material to volatilize at least one component of the smokable material, such that an air flow path through the hollow central portion of the heater is isolated from the control circuitry and the power source to prevent airflow through the hollow central portion of the heater from passing to the control circuitry and the power source.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the sheet comprises a first plastics layer.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the first plastics layer is a polyimide layer.

11. The method according to claim 9 , further comprising forming at least one electrically conductive track on the first plastics layer prior to rolling the sheet into the hollow tube.

12. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising forming a second plastics layer on the electrically conductive track such that the electrically conductive track is between the first plastics layer and the second plastics layer.

13. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the heater is a thin film heater.
