Abstract

Methods and apparatus for implementing a camera having a depth which is less than the maximum length of the outer lens of at least one optical chain of the camera are described. In some embodiments a light redirection device, e.g., a mirror, is used to allow a relatively long optical chain with a relatively large non-circular outer lens. In some embodiments the light redirection device has a depth, e.g., front of camera to back of camera dimension, which is less than the maximum length of the aperture of the outer lens in the aperture's direction of maximum extent. Multiple optical chains with non-circular outer lenses arranged in different directions may and in some embodiments are used to capture images with the captured images being combined to generate a composite image.

Claims (30)

1. A camera device, the camera device comprising:

a camera housing including a front surface and a rear surface, said camera housing having a thickness D, where D is a distance between said front surface and said rear surface; and

a first optical chain, in said camera housing, said first optical chain including a first light redirection device, a first lens, and a first sensor, said first optical chain having a first optical axis including a first optical axis portion in front of said light redirection device and a second optical axis portion extending from the light redirection device to the first sensor, said first lens being on said second optical axis portion, said first lens having a length less than or equal to D in a first direction along the direction of the thickness of the camera, light entering said first optical chain through a first aperture in the front surface of the camera housing;

a second optical chain, which does not include a mirror, said second optical chain facing out the front surface of the camera housing and having a second optical axis which extends straight back towards a second sensor; and

a display device positioned in said camera housing behind said first and second optical chains.

2. The camera device of claim 1 , wherein said first light redirection device is a mirror.

3. The camera device of claim 2 ,

wherein said second optical chain has a smaller focal length than said first optical chain, said second optical chain having a second aperture through which light enters the second optical chain.

4. The camera device of claim 3 , wherein said first aperture is positioned in said camera housing above or below said second aperture.

5. The camera device of claim 3 , wherein said second aperture is positioned in said camera housing at a position closer to a middle portion of said camera housing than said first aperture.

6. The camera device of claim 5 , further comprising a third optical chain which does not include a mirror, said third optical chain being one of a group of optical chains which do not include mirrors, said second and third optical chains being arranged adjacent each other in said camera housing.

7. The camera device of claim 6 , further comprising:

a fourth optical chain which does not include a mirror, said fourth optical chain being positioned adjacent one of said second and third optical chains.

8. The camera device of claim 7 , wherein said second, third, and fourth optical chains are part of a cluster of adjacent optical chains which do not include mirrors.

9. The camera device of claim 8 , wherein said cluster of optical chains which do not include mirrors are positioned in a center region of a front face of said camera housing.

10. The camera device of claim 8 , further comprising:

a plurality of optical chains which include mirrors positioned around said cluster of optical chains which do not include mirrors; and

wherein said first optical chain is one of said plurality of optical chains which include mirrors.

11. The camera device of claim 2 , further comprising:

a processor configured to:

use an image captured by one of said first and second optical chains as a reference image; and

combine image content from a first image captured by one of said first and second optical chains and image content from a second image captured by another one of said first and second optical chains to generate a composite image, a reference image being one of said first and second images.

12. The camera device of claim 11 , wherein said processor is configured to adjust the image content of one of said first and second images based on a zoom difference between the reference image and the image which with the reference image is combined.

13. The camera device of claim 1 , wherein said first light redirection device is one of a mirror or a prism.

14. The camera device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a third optical chain which includes a third aperture and a second light redirection device, said first, second and third optical chains being arranged in a vertical line.

15. The camera device of claim 14 , wherein said first optical chain is between said second and third optical chains.

16. The camera device of claim 15 , wherein said first, second and third optical chains have different focal lengths, said first optical chain having a smaller focal length than said second optical chain and said third optical chain having a smaller focal length than said second optical chain.

17. The camera device of claim 16 , further comprising:

additional optical chains including mirrors being positioned in said camera housing to the left and right of said vertical line.
