Abstract

An apparatus for controlling movement of a laterally translating component includes a first fixed housing in a fixed position with respect to a central axis and a second housing that moves linearly along the central axis. The first fixed housing and the second housing define a first and second fluid chambers interconnected by a fluid channel. The second housing moves linearly between a first position along the central axis to define a first size for the first and second fluid chambers and a second position along the central axis to define a second size for the first and second fluid chambers to control flow of the fluid through the channel. The first size is larger than the second size. The second position of the second housing limits lateral movement of the second housing more than the first position of the second housing limits the lateral movement of the second housing.

Claims (43)

1. An apparatus for controlling lateral movement of a laterally translating component, comprising:

a first fixed housing that remains in a fixed position with respect to a central axis;

a second housing that is interfaced with the laterally translating component that moves linearly along the central axis;

wherein the first fixed housing and the second housing together define a first fluid chamber and a second fluid chamber for containing fluid interconnected by a fluid channel;

wherein the second housing moves linearly between a first position along the central axis defining a first size for the first fluid chamber and the second fluid chamber and a second position along the central axis defining a second size for the first fluid chamber and the second fluid chamber to control flow of the fluid through the fluid channel, the first size being larger than the second size; and

wherein the second position of the second housing limits lateral movement of the second housing and the interfaced laterally translating component to a greater degree than the first position of the second housing limits the lateral movement of the second housing and the interfaced laterally translating component.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising first circuity for actuating movement of the second housing between the first position and the second position.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first circuitry for actuating moves the second housing to the second position to restrict the flow of the fluid through the fluid channel to limit lateral movement of the second housing.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first circuitry for actuating moves the second housing to the first position when more rapid flow of the fluid through the fluid channel is required and lateral movement of the second housing does not need to be restricted.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second housing further includes:

a first seal carrier forming a first seal between the second housing and the first fixed housing to maintain the fluid within the first fluid chamber; and

a second seal carrier forming a second seal between the second housing and the first fixed housing to maintain the fluid within the second fluid chamber.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first fixed housing comprises a first annular fixed housing and the second housing comprises a second annular housing.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second housing defines an opening along the central axis for receiving a rotating drive shaft.

8. A system, comprising

a movement mechanism configured to use mechanical energy provided by a mechanical energy source to enable translational movement of a first surface relative to a second surface to allow the first surface to repeatedly impact the second surface to produce a plurality of vibration beats;

a damping mechanism to selectively control the impact of the first surface with the second surface, the damping mechanism:

a first fixed housing that remains in a fixed position with respect to a central axis;

a second housing that is interfaced with the translating first surface that moves linearly along the central axis;

wherein the first fixed housing and the second housing together define a first fluid chamber and a second fluid chamber for containing fluid interconnected by a fluid channel;

wherein the second housing moves linearly between a first position along the central axis defining a first size for the first fluid chamber and the second fluid chamber and a second position along the central axis defining a second size for the first fluid chamber and the second fluid chamber to control flow of the fluid through the fluid channel, the first size being larger than the second size; and

wherein the second position of the second housing limits lateral movement of the second housing and the interfaced translating first surface to a greater degree than the first position of the second housing limits the lateral movement of the second housing and the interfaced translating first surface.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising first circuity for actuating movement of the second housing between the first position and the second position.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first circuitry for actuating moves the second housing to the second position to restrict the flow of the fluid through the fluid channel to limit lateral movement of the second housing.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first circuitry for actuating moves the second housing to the first position when more rapid flow of the fluid through the fluid channel is required and lateral movement of the second housing does not need to be restricted.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second housing further includes:

a first seal carrier forming a first seal between the second housing and the first fixed housing to maintain the fluid within the first fluid chamber; and

a second seal carrier forming a second seal between the second housing and the first fixed housing to maintain the fluid within the second fluid chamber.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first fixed housing comprises a first annular fixed housing and the second housing comprises a second annular housing.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second housing defines an opening along the central axis for receiving a rotating drive shaft.

15. A method for controlling linear movement of a mechanical device, comprising:

maintaining a first fixed housing in a fixed position along a central axis;

moving a second housing to a first position linearly along the central axis to restrict flow of fluid through a fluid channel between a first fluid chamber and a second fluid chamber; and

moving the second housing to a second position linearly along the central axis to facilitate flow of the fluid through the fluid channel between the first fluid chamber and the second fluid chamber;

wherein the first position defines a first size for the first fluid chamber and the second fluid chamber and the second position along the central axis defines a second size for the first fluid chamber and the second fluid chamber to control flow of the fluid through the fluid channel, the first size being larger than the second size; and

wherein the second position of the second housing limits lateral movement of the second housing to a greater degree than the first position of the second housing limits the lateral movement of the second housing.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising actuating movement of the second housing between the first position and the second position using a first circuitry.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the step of moving the second housing to the second position further comprises moving the second housing to the second position to restrict the flow of the fluid through the fluid channel to limit lateral movement of the second housing.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the step of moving the second housing to the first position further comprises moving the second housing to the first position when more rapid flow of the fluid through the fluid channel is required and lateral movement of the second housing does not need to be restricted.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

repeatedly impacting a first surface of a movement mechanism with a second surface of the mechanical mechanism to produce a plurality of vibration beats; and
