Abstract

Example methods and apparatus for associating media devices with a demographic composition of a geographic area are disclosed. A disclosed example method includes receiving a plurality of Internet Protocol addresses assigned to a media device associated with a panel member, determining a most used Internet Protocol address from the plurality of Internet Protocol addresses, accessing geographic information and determining a geographic location corresponding to the most used Internet Protocol address, accessing demographic information and determining a demographic profile associated with the geographic location, and associating at least one of the geographic location or the demographic profile with the media device.

Claims (39)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a receiver to obtain a plurality of Internet Protocol addresses associated with a media device; and

an address resolver to:

determine a first amount of usage of a first Internet Protocol address used by the media device;

determine a second amount of usage of a second Internet Protocol address used by the media device;

select the first Internet Protocol address or the second Internet Protocol address as a most used Internet Protocol address based on the first amount of usage and the second amount of usage;

identify latitude-longitude coordinates associated with the most used Internet Protocol address;

identify a first geographic area of a plurality of geographic areas corresponding to a home location based on the latitude-longitude coordinates associated with the most used Internet Protocol address;

access demographic information associated with the plurality of geographic areas; and

match the home location with a portion of the demographic information associated with the first geographic area to associate a demographic segment with the media device based on the first geographic area.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the usage corresponds to an amount of bandwidth.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the address resolver is to associate the demographic segment with the media device by linking a reference code corresponding to the demographic segment to an identifier of the media device.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the address resolver is to associate the demographic segment with the media device by linking the demographic segment to an electronic recording including the media device.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first Internet Protocol address is the most used Internet Protocol address, wherein the latitude-longitude coordinates are first latitude-longitude coordinates, wherein the second Internet Protocol address is associated with second latitude-longitude coordinates, and wherein the first latitude-longitude coordinates and the second latitude-longitude coordinates are associated with different locations.

6. An article of manufacture comprising computer readable instructions that, when executed, cause a processor to at least:

obtain a plurality of Internet Protocol addresses associated with a media device;

determine a first amount of usage of a first Internet Protocol address used by the media device;

determine a second amount of usage of a second Internet Protocol address used by the media device;

select the first Internet Protocol address or the second Internet Protocol address as a most used Internet Protocol address based on the first amount of usage and the second amount of usage;

identify latitude-longitude coordinates associated with the most used Internet Protocol address;

determine a first geographic area of a plurality of geographic areas corresponding to a home location based on the latitude-longitude coordinates associated with the most used Internet Protocol address;

access demographic information associated with the plurality of geographic areas; and

match the home location with a portion of the demographic information associated with the first geographic area to associate a demographic segment with the media device based on the first geographic area.

7. The article of manufacture of claim 6 , wherein the usage corresponds to an amount of bandwidth.

8. The article of manufacture of claim 6 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to associate the demographic segment with the media device by linking a reference code corresponding to the demographic segment to an identifier of the media device.

9. The article of manufacture of claim 6 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to associate the demographic segment with the media device by linking the demographic segment to an electronic recording including the media device.

10. The article of manufacture of claim 6 , wherein the first Internet Protocol address is the most used Internet Protocol address, wherein the latitude-longitude coordinates are first latitude-longitude coordinates, wherein the second Internet Protocol address is associated with second latitude-longitude coordinates, and wherein the first latitude-longitude coordinates and the second latitude-longitude coordinates are associated with different locations.

11. A method comprising:

obtaining a plurality of Internet Protocol addresses associated with a media device;

determining, by executing instructions with a processor, a first amount of usage of a first Internet Protocol address used by the media device;

determining, by executing instructions with a processor, a second amount of usage of a second Internet Protocol address used by the media device;

selecting, by executing instructions with a processor, the first Internet Protocol address or the second Internet Protocol address as a most used Internet Protocol address based on the first amount of usage and the second amount of usage;

identifying, by executing instructions with a processor, latitude-longitude coordinates associated with the most used Internet Protocol address;

determining, by executing an instruction with the processor, a first geographic area of a plurality of geographic areas corresponding to a home location based on the latitude-longitude coordinates associated with the most used Internet Protocol address;

accessing, by executing an instruction with the processor, demographic information associated with the plurality of geographic areas; and

matching, by executing an instruction with the processor, the home location with a portion of the demographic information associated with the first geographic area to associate a demographic segment with the media device based on the first geographic area.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the associating of the demographic segment with the media device includes linking a reference code corresponding to the demographic segment to an identifier of the media device.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the associating of the demographic segment with the media device includes linking the demographic segment to an electronic recording including the media device.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first Internet Protocol address is the most used Internet Protocol address, wherein the latitude-longitude coordinates are first latitude-longitude coordinates, wherein the second Internet Protocol address is associated with second latitude-longitude coordinates, and wherein the first latitude-longitude coordinates and the second latitude-longitude coordinates are associated with different locations.
