Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for adaptive guard interval (GI) combining. A signal carrying a symbol that is preceded by a guard interval (GI) that includes a portion of the symbol may be received, and a portion of the GI that is free from inter-symbol interference (ISI) may be determined. Only a part of the ISI-free portion of the GI may be selected. The selected part of the ISI-free portion of the GI may be less than a whole of the ISI-free portion. The selection may be configured based on a parameter that is applied to a function used in extracting the symbol. The parameter may be a timing adjustment, relative to a start of the symbol, applied to the function when extracting the symbol. Only the part of the ISI-free portion of the GI may then be extracted and combined with a corresponding portion of the symbol.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a signal carrying at least one symbol that is preceded by a guard interval (GI) that comprises a portion of the symbol;

determining a portion of the guard interval (GI) that is free from inter-symbol interference (ISI);

selecting only a part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI), wherein:

the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI) is less than a whole of the ISI-free portion; and

the selection is configured based on a parameter that is applied to a function used in extracting the symbol;

extracting only the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI); and

combining the extracted part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI) with a corresponding portion of the symbol.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the received signal comprises an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the guard interval (GI) is generated based on cyclic prefixing.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the combining comprises a linear addition and a shifting operation.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the parameter comprises a timing adjustment, relative to a start of the symbol, applied to the function when used in extracting the symbol.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising configuring one or more of the selecting, the extracting and the combining of the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI) being based on a measurement associated with a communication channel used in receiving the received signal.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the measurement comprises obtaining at least one measured value associated with the communication channel, and further comprising performing the configuring based on comparing of the measured value with a corresponding preset value.

8. The method of claim 1 , comprising adaptively selecting the corresponding portion of the symbol within the symbol, based on one or more criterion.

9. The method of claim 8 , comprising selecting the corresponding portion of the symbol based on the selecting of the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI).

10. The method of claim 9 , comprising selecting the corresponding portion of the symbol to have a same size as the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI).

11. A system comprising:

one or more signal receiving circuits configured for receiving a signal; and

one or more signal processing circuits configured to, when the signal carries at least one symbol that is preceded by a guard interval (GI) that comprises a portion of the symbol:

determine a portion of the guard interval (GI) that is free from inter-symbol interference (ISI);

select only a part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI), wherein:

the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI) is less than a whole of the ISI-free portion; and

the selection is configured based on a parameter that is applied to a function used in extracting the symbol;

extract only the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI); and

combine the extracted part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI) with a corresponding portion of the symbol.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the parameter comprises a timing adjustment, relative to a start of the symbol, applied to the function when used in extracting the symbol.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the received signal comprises an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signal.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the guard interval (GI) is generated based on cyclic prefixing.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more signal processing circuits are configured to, when combining the extracted part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI) with the corresponding portion of the symbol, apply a linear addition and a shifting operation.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more signal processing circuits are configured to perform one or more of the selecting, the extracting and the combining of the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI) based on a measurement associated with a communication channel used in receiving the received signal.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more signal processing circuits are configured to, when performing the measurement, obtain at least one measured value associated with the communication channel, and compare the measured value with a corresponding preset value.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more signal processing circuits are configured to adaptively select the corresponding portion of the symbol within the symbol, based on one or more criterion.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the one or more signal processing circuits are configured to select the corresponding portion of the symbol based on the selecting of the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI).

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the one or more signal processing circuits are configured to select the corresponding portion of the symbol to have a same size as the part of the ISI-free portion of the guard interval (GI).
