Abstract

A wound treatment appliance is provided for treating all or a portion of a wound. In some embodiments, the appliance comprises a cover or a flexible overlay that covers all or a portion of the wound for purposes of applying a reduced pressure to the covered portion of the wound. In other embodiments, the wound treatment appliance also includes a vacuum system to supply reduced pressure to the site of the wound in the volume under the cover or in the area under the flexible overlay. Methods are provided for using various embodiments of the invention.

Claims (23)

1. A wound therapy device, comprising:

a cover layer to cover at least a portion of a wound site;

a collection chamber beneath the cover layer, wherein the collection chamber collects and stores wound fluids from the wound site, and wherein the collection chamber retains collected wound fluids stored therein upon application of negative pressure thereto;

an opening in the cover layer configured to be in fluid communication with a reduced pressure supply source for creating negative pressure within at least the collection chamber;

a reduced pressure supply conduit, the reduced pressure supply conduit defining at least a portion of a fluid flow path from the reduced pressure supply source to the cover layer;

a first filter configured to be positioned in the fluid flow path between the cover layer and the reduced pressure supply source; and

a second filter at the opening, the second filter configured to allow application of negative pressure through the second filter and passage of air through the second filter in a direction of the reduced pressure supply source.

2. The wound therapy device of claim 1 , wherein the second filter comprises a one-way valve.

3. The wound therapy device of claim 1 , wherein the second filter is configured to maintain negative pressure within the collection chamber when application of negative pressure from the reduced pressure supply conduit is discontinued.

4. The wound therapy device of claim 1 , further comprising a wound interface layer.

5. The wound therapy device of claim 4 , wherein the wound interface layer is configured to allow liquid to flow in a direction of the reduced pressure supply source, but prevent liquid from flowing in an opposite direction.

6. The wound therapy device of claim 5 , wherein the wound interface layer comprises a flow control valve.

7. The wound therapy device of claim 1 , wherein the first filter comprises a micropore filter.

The wound therapy device of claim 1 , wherein the first filter is positioned such that a first length of the reduced pressure supply conduit is positioned between the first filter and the cover layer, and a second length of the reduced pressure supply conduit is positioned between the first filter and the reduced pressure supply source.

9. A wound therapy device, comprising:

a cover layer configured to cover at least a portion of a wound site;

a collection chamber positioned beneath the cover layer, the collection chamber configured to collect and store wound fluids from the wound site, and wherein the collection chamber is configured to retain collected wound fluids stored therein upon application of negative pressure thereto;

an opening in the cover layer configured to be in fluid communication with a reduced pressure supply source for creating negative pressure within at least the collection chamber;

a reduced pressure supply conduit, the reduced pressure supply conduit defining at least a portion of a fluid flow path from a reduced pressure supply source to the collection chamber; and

a valve configured to allow passage of negative pressure through the valve and to maintain negative pressure within the collection chamber when application of negative pressure from the reduced pressure supply conduit is discontinued.

10. The wound therapy device of claim 9 , wherein the valve comprises a one-way valve.

11. The wound therapy device of claim 9 , further comprising a wound interface layer.

12. The wound therapy device of claim 11 , wherein the wound interface layer is configured to allow liquid to flow in a direction of the reduced pressure supply source, but prevent liquid from flowing in an opposite direction.
