Gaming system and method for accumulating symbols to activate a primary event feature or trigger a secondary event
Gaming systems and methods for accumulating designated symbols, wherein the form of the designated symbols accumulated as well as the quantity of designated symbols accumulated determine whether to activate a feature in one or more plays of a first game or trigger a secondary event, such as a win of a progressive award.
1. A gaming system comprising:
a processor; and
a memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
cause a display, for a play of a game and by a display device, of a first plurality of symbols at a plurality of symbol display positions associated with a plurality of reels,
responsive to any of the first plurality of symbols displayed at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels being a designated symbol, accumulate that designated symbol in association with the reel associated with the symbol display position at which that designated symbol is displayed, wherein each accumulated designated symbol comprises one form of a secondary event triggering form and a non-secondary event triggering form,
responsive to a first quantity of at least two designated symbols of any form being simultaneously accumulated in association with any of the reels, redeem the first quantity of at least two designated symbols of any form in exchange for an activation of a game feature, and
responsive to a second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form being simultaneously accumulated in association with at least two of the reels:
trigger a secondary event, and
modify the second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form.

The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the simultaneous accumulation of the at least two designated symbols of any form comprises a designated symbol of a second plurality of symbols previously displayed, by the display device, at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels for a prior play of the game.

The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the simultaneous accumulation of the at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form comprises a designated symbol of a second plurality of symbols previously displayed, by the display device, at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels for a prior play of the game.
4. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the activated game feature comprises a modification of the first plurality of symbols.
5. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the triggered secondary event comprises a win of a progressive award.
6. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein when executed by the processor, the instructions cause the processor to accumulate a plurality of designated symbols in association with at least one of the reels.
7. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein when executed by the processor, the instructions cause the processor to trigger the secondary event responsive to the second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form being simultaneously accumulated in association with each of the reels.
8. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the activated game feature is associated with a subsequent play of the game.
9. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the modification of the second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form comprises a removal of an accumulated designated symbol of the secondary event form.
10. The gaming system of claim 1 , further comprising an acceptor, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to, responsive to a physical item being received via the acceptor, establish a credit balance based on a monetary value associated with the received physical item, and responsive to a cashout input being received, cause an initiation of any payout associated with the credit balance.
11. The gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the display device comprises part of a mobile device in communication with the processor via a wireless network.
12. A gaming system comprising:
a processor; and
a memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
for a first play of a game:
cause a display, by a display device, of a first plurality of symbols at a plurality of symbol display positions associated with a plurality of reels, and
responsive to any of the first plurality of symbols displayed at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels being a designated symbol, accumulate that designated symbol in association with the reel associated with the symbol display position at which that designated symbol is displayed, wherein each accumulated designated symbol comprises one form of a secondary event triggering form and a non-secondary event triggering form, and for a second, subsequent play of the game:
cause a display, by the display device, of a second plurality of symbols at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels,
responsive to any of the second plurality of symbols displayed at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels being a designated symbol, accumulate that designated symbol in association with the reel of the symbol display position at which that designated symbol is displayed,
responsive to a first quantity of at least two designated symbols of any form being simultaneously accumulated in association with any of the reels over the first and second plays of the game, redeem the first quantity of at least two designated symbols of any form in exchange for an activation of a game feature for a third play of the game, and
responsive to a second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form being simultaneously accumulated in association with each of the reels over the first and second plays of the game:
display, by the display device, a win of a progressive award, and
modify the second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form.
13. A method of operating a gaming system, the method comprising:
displaying, for a play of a game and by a display device, a first plurality of symbols at a plurality of symbol display positions associated with a plurality of reels,
responsive to any of the first plurality of symbols displayed at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels being a designated symbol, accumulating, by a processor, that designated symbol in association with the reel of the symbol display position at which that designated symbol is displayed, wherein each accumulated designated symbol comprises one form of a secondary event triggering form and a non-secondary event triggering form,
responsive to a first quantity of at least two designated symbols of any form being simultaneously accumulated in association with any of the reels, redeeming, by the processor, the first quantity of at least two designated symbols of any form in exchange for an activation of a game feature, and
responsive to a second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form being simultaneously accumulated in association with at least two of the reels:
triggering, by the processor, a secondary event, and
modifying, by the processor, the second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form.

The method of claim 13 , wherein the simultaneous accumulation of the at least two designated symbols of any form comprises a designated symbol of a second plurality of symbols previously displayed, by the display device, at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels for a prior play of the game.
15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the simultaneous accumulation of the at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form comprises a designated symbol of a second plurality of symbols previously displayed, by the display device, at the plurality of symbol display positions associated with the plurality of reels for a prior play of the game.
16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the activated game feature comprises a modification of the first plurality of symbols.
17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the triggered secondary event comprises a win of a progressive award.
18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising accumulating, by the processor, a plurality of designated symbols in association with at least one of the reels.
19. The method of claim 13 , further comprising triggering, by the processor, the secondary event responsive to the second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form being simultaneously accumulated in association with each of the reels.
20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the activated game feature is associated with a subsequent play of the game.
21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the modification of the second quantity of at least two designated symbols of the secondary event triggering form comprises a removal of an accumulated designated symbol of the secondary event form.
