Abstract

The subject matter of the present disclosure generally relates to techniques for applying mechanical or ultrasound energy to a region of interest in a subject to induce modulation of one or more nerve pathways. The region of interest may include at least a portion of a nerve ganglion.

Claims (27)

1. A method, comprising applying mechanical or ultrasound energy directly to at least a portion of a nodose ganglion in a subject to induce modulation of one or more nerve pathways.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mechanical or ultrasound energy is ultrasound energy.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more nerve pathways comprise an anti-inflammatory pathway and a glucose regulatory pathway.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the mechanical or ultrasound energy to at least the portion of the nodose ganglion results in a change in concentration of one or more molecules of interest at a distal site within the subject.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more molecules of interest comprises glucose.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more molecules of interest comprises tumor necrosis factor.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more molecules of interest comprises acetylcholine.

8. A method comprising applying mechanical or ultrasound energy directly to at least a portion of a sacral ganglion in a subject to induce modulation of two or more nerve pathways.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the two or more nerve pathways comprise one or more neuro-immune pathways, one or more anti-inflammatory pathways, one or more dopamine production pathways, one or more glucose regulatory pathways, one or more insulin production pathways, or combinations thereof.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the two or more nerve pathways comprise an anti-inflammatory pathway and a dopamine production pathway.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein applying the mechanical or ultrasound energy to at least the portion of the sacral ganglion results in a change in concentration of one or more molecules of interest at a distal site within the subject.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more molecules of interest comprises dopamine.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the two or more nerve pathways are modulated simultaneously.

14. A system, comprising:

an energy application device configured to apply mechanical or ultrasound energy directly to a region of interest in a subject for modulating one or more nerve pathways, wherein the region of interest comprises at least a portion of a nodose nerve ganglion or at least a portion of a sacral nerve ganglion;

a controller configured to:

spatially select the region of interest; and

control one or more modulation parameters of the energy application device; and

an assessment device configured to measure a change in concentration of glucose molecules in the subject after a first application of the mechanical or ultrasound energy to the region of interest;

wherein the controller is configured to adjust the one or more modulation parameters of the energy application device, or the region of interest, or both, before a second application of the mechanical or ultrasound energy to the region of interest based on the change in the concentration of glucose molecules.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the energy application device is an ultrasound transducer.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the region of interest comprises the nodose ganglion.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the region of interest comprises the sacral nerve ganglion.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein two nerve pathways of the one or more nerve pathways are modulated.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the assessment device is configured to measure an additional change in concentration of insulin molecules in the subject after the first application of the mechanical or ultrasound energy to the region of interest.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the controller is configured to adjust the one or more modulation parameters of the energy application device, or the region of interest, or both, before the second application of the mechanical or ultrasound energy to the region of interest based on the change in the concentration of glucose molecules and the additional change in the concentration of insulin molecules.

21. The system of claim 14 , wherein the region of interest in the subject is less than 25 cubic millimeters (mm 3 ).
