Abstract

A system, method, and apparatus are disclosed for dressing a wound. The apparatus comprises a liquid and gas permeable transmission layer, an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer overlying the transmission layer, a gas impermeable cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising a first orifice, wherein the cover layer is moisture vapor permeable.

Claims (34)

1. A wound treatment apparatus comprising a wound dressing, the wound dressing comprising:

a gas impermeable cover layer comprising a fluid passage;

a transmission layer comprising an upper portion and a lower portion, wherein the upper portion comprises a first plurality of openings and the lower portion comprises a second plurality of openings, and wherein the first plurality of openings has larger open area than the second plurality of openings; and

an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer comprising a through hole positioned beneath the fluid passage of the cover layer.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion of the transmission layer comprises a first filament count and the lower portion of the transmission layer comprises a second filament count, wherein the first filament count is greater than the second filament count.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transmission layer comprises fiber elements extending between the upper portion and the lower portion of the transmission layer.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the absorbent layer is positioned above the transmission layer.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transmission layer comprises a knitted layer of at least partially elastomeric material.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the transmission layer comprises a 3D fabric material.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wound dressing further comprises a suction port connectable to a source of negative pressure, the suction port positioned above the fluid passage.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the suction port further comprises:

a connector portion configured to connect the suction port to a source of negative pressure; and

a sealing surface for sealing the suction port to the cover layer of the wound dressing.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a wound contact layer.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cover layer comprises moisture vapour permeable material.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the absorbent layer comprises superabsorbent material.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the absorbent layer is in contact with the cover layer.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a source of negative pressure.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the source of negative pressure comprises a vacuum pump.

15. A wound treatment apparatus comprising:

a vacuum pump; and

a wound dressing, the wound dressing comprising:

a gas impermeable cover layer comprising a fluid passage;

an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate positioned beneath the cover layer and comprising superabsorbent material, wherein the absorbent layer is in contact with the cover layer and comprises a through hole positioned beneath the fluid passage in the cover layer;

a transmission layer positioned beneath the absorbent layer comprising an upper portion and a lower portion, wherein the upper portion comprises a first plurality of openings and the lower portion comprises a second plurality of openings, and wherein the first plurality of openings has larger open area than the second plurality of openings;

a wound contact layer comprising a plurality of apertures positioned beneath the transmission layer; and

a suction port connectable to the vacuum pump, the suction port positioned above the fluid passage, wherein the suction port comprises:

a connector portion configured to fluidly connect the suction port to the vacuum pump; and

a sealing surface for sealing the suction port to the cover layer of the wound dressing.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the upper portion of the transmission layer comprises a first filament count and the lower portion of the transmission layer comprises a second filament count, wherein the first filament count is greater than the second filament count.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the transmission layer comprises fiber elements extending laterally between the upper portion and the lower portion of the transmission layer.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the transmission layer comprises a knitted layer of at least partially elastomeric material.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the transmission layer comprises a 3D fabric material.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the cover layer comprises moisture vapour permeable material.
