Abstract

Techniques for recommending media are described. A character preference function comprising a plurality of preference coefficients is accessed. A first character model comprises a first set of attribute values for the plurality of attributes of a first character. The first and second characters are associated with a first and second salience value, respectively. A second character model comprises a second set of attribute values for the plurality of attributes of a second character of the plurality of characters. A first character rating is calculated using the plurality of preference coefficients and the first set of attribute values. A second character rating of the second character is calculated using the plurality of preference coefficients with the second set of attribute values. A media rating is calculated based on the first and second salience values and the first and second character ratings. A media is recommended based on the media rating.

Claims (50)

1. A method comprising:

accessing, by a computing system, a plurality of preference coefficients associated with a user, each preference coefficient of the plurality of preference coefficients associated with at least one attribute of interest of a plurality of attributes;

determining, by the computing system, a first character rating of a first character of a plurality of characters of a media content based on the plurality of preference coefficients;

determining, by the computing system, a media content rating for the media content based on the first character rating; and

ranking, by the computing system, the media content within a list of media contents based on the media content rating for the media content.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a second media content rating for a second media content within the list of media contents,

wherein the ranking is further based on the second media content rating for the second media content.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising recommending the media content to the user based on the ranking.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content comprises an advertisement, and wherein the method further comprises providing the advertisement for display based on the ranking.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising accessing a first plurality of attribute values for the plurality of attributes of the first character,

wherein the determining the first character rating is further based on the first plurality of attribute values.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising accessing a first salience value for the first character,

wherein the first salience value is indicative of a salience of the first character in the media content relative to one or more other characters in the media content, and

wherein the determining the first character rating is further based on the first salience value.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining the first salience value based on an on-screen time of the first character in the media content.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining the first salience value based on a number of reactions detected in social media relating to the first character.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining the first salience value based on a number of search results returned from a search engine for a name of the first character.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a second character rating of a second character of the plurality of characters of the media content based on the plurality of preference coefficients,

wherein the determining the media content rating for the media content is further based on the second character rating.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon program instructions that upon execution by a processor, cause performance of a set of acts comprising:

accessing a plurality of preference coefficients associated with a user, each preference coefficient of the plurality of preference coefficients associated with at least one attribute of interest of a plurality of attributes;

determining a first character rating of a first character of a plurality of characters of a media content based on the plurality of preference coefficients;

determining a media content rating for the media content based on the first character rating; and

ranking the media content within a list of media contents based on the media content rating for the media content.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 :

wherein the set of acts further comprises determining a second media content rating for a second media content within the list of media contents, and

wherein the ranking is further based on the second media content rating for the second media content.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the set of acts further comprises recommending the media content to the user based on the ranking.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 :

wherein the media content comprises an advertisement, and

wherein set of acts further comprises providing the advertisement for display based on the ranking.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 :

wherein the set of acts further comprises accessing a first plurality of attribute values for the plurality of attributes of the first character, and

wherein the determining the first character rating is further based on the first plurality of attribute values.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 :

wherein the set of acts further comprises accessing a first salience value for the first character,

wherein the first salience value is indicative of a salience of the first character in the media content relative to one or more other characters in the media content, and

wherein the determining the first character rating is further based on the first salience value.

17. A computing system comprising a computer processor coupled to a memory, the computing system configured for performing a set of acts comprising:

accessing a plurality of preference coefficients associated with a user, each preference coefficient of the plurality of preference coefficients associated with at least one attribute of interest of a plurality of attributes;

determining a first character rating of a first character of a plurality of characters of a media content based on the plurality of preference coefficients;

determining a media content rating for the media content based on the first character rating; and

ranking the media content within a list of media contents based on the media content rating for the media content.

18. The computing system of claim 17 :

wherein the set of acts further comprises determining a second media content rating for a second media content within the list of media contents, and

wherein the ranking is further based on the second media content rating for the second media content.

19. The computing system of claim 17 , wherein the set of acts further comprises recommending the media content to the user based on the ranking.

20. The computing system of claim 17 :

wherein the media content comprises an advertisement, and

wherein the set of acts further comprises providing the advertisement for display based on the ranking.
