Abstract

The present invention provides a process for preparing an improved compounded product and a compounded product prepared by that process.

Claims (19)

1. A process for preparing an injection-molded compounded polyamide from a molten feedstock, the process comprising:

preparing a polyamide feedstock in a molten state;

introducing the molten polyamide feedstock or a portion thereof at a consistent rate directly to an extruder containing at least one degassing zone;

mixing and/or blending the molten polyamide feedstock with one or more materials to provide a compounded polyamide; and

subjecting the compounded polyamide to injection molding, wherein the injection molded compounded polyamide has a plate out value in an injection mold of less than about 3 mg/1,000 shots.

2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the molten polyamide feedstock is a molten nylon66 feedstock.

3. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the extruder is a twin-screw extruder.

4. The process according to claim 3 , wherein the twin-screw extruder has a length to diameter ratio of the screw shaft in the range of 24:1 to 56:1.

5. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the extruder contains at least 3 vent ports.

6. The process according to claim 5 , wherein a portion of the vent ports are subjected to vacuum conditions.

7. The process according to claim 5 , wherein the extruder contains at least 4 vent ports.

8. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the materials comprise one or more fibers, waxes, minerals, chain terminators, viscosity modifiers, plasticizers, heat stabilizers, UV stabilizers, colorants, flame retardants, delusterants, fillers, reinforcing agents, antimicrobial agents, antistatic agents, optical brighteners, extenders and processing aids.

9. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the polymer polymerization process occurs less than 50 feet from the extruder.

10. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the compounded polyamide has a relative viscosity (RV) range between samples of the compounded polyamide prepared by the polymerization process of less than about 3 units.

11. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the extruder contains at least 2 degassing zones.

12. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the extruder contains at least 3 degassing zones.

13. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the injection molded compounded polyamide has a plate out value in an injection mold of less than about 1.0 mg/1,000 shots.

14. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the injection molded compounded polyamide has a plate out value in an injection mold of less than about 0.5 mg/1,000 shots.

15. An article comprising an injection molded compounded polyamide prepared by the process according to claim 1 .
