Abstract

A hybrid sacrificial galvanic anode, an anodic system including the hybrid sacrificial anode, and a method of cathodically protecting steel reinforcement in concrete structures is provided. The hybrid anode provides initial steel polarization followed by long term galvanic protection without the use of batteries or external power supplies.

Claims (39)

1. A sacrificial anode body comprising:

a first sacrificial metal;

a second sacrificial metal, said second sacrificial metal being less electrochemically negative than said first sacrificial metal, wherein said first sacrificial metal and said second sacrificial metal are more electrochemically negative than steel;

an encasement material comprising a porous mortar at least partially covering said first and second sacrificial metals;

an insulative adhesive spacer in contact with said encasement material and having a compressible adhesive capable of absorption of corrosion products from said first and/or second sacrificial metal, wherein the insulative adhesive spacer is adhesively attached to said anode body to provide electrical and ionic insulation and an electrical and ionic path to optimize charge distribution around the anode; and

at least one elongated electrical conductor electrically connected to said anode body.

2. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said at least one elongated electrical conductor emanates from said encasement material.

3. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said anode body comprises a layer of said second sacrificial metal sandwiched between two layers of said first sacrificial metal.

4. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said first sacrificial metal comprises magnesium or a magnesium alloy.

5. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said second sacrificial metal comprises zinc or a zinc alloy.

6. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said first sacrificial metal comprises magnesium or a magnesium alloy and said second sacrificial metal comprises zinc or a zinc alloy.

7. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said insulative adhesive spacer comprises a double-sided tape.

8. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said anode body comprises a substantially cylindrical shape having a C-shaped recess extending essentially the length of one side of the anode body.

9. An assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure comprising:

an anode body comprising a first and second sacrificial metal, said first sacrificial metal being more electrochemically negative than steel, said second sacrificial metal being less electrochemically negative than said first sacrificial metal;

said first sacrificial metal and/or said second sacrificial metal at least partially covered with an encasement material comprising a porous mortar;

an insulative adhesive spacer in contact with said encasement material and having a compressible adhesive capable of absorption of corrosion products from said first and/or second sacrificial metal wherein the insulative adhesive spacer adhesively attaches said anode body to said steel reinforcement and provides electrical and ionic insulation and an electrical or ionic path spacer to optimize charge distribution around the anode; and

at least one electrical conductor for electrically connecting said anode body to said steel reinforcement.

10. The assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 9 , wherein said first sacrificial metal comprises magnesium or alloys thereof and said second sacrificial metal comprises zinc or alloys thereof.

11. The assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 9 , wherein said first and second sacrificial metals each comprise at least one perforated strip.

12. The assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 9 , wherein said first sacrificial metal comprises a solid mass and said second sacrificial metal comprises at least one perforated strip.

13. The assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 9 , wherein said insulative adhesive spacer comprises a double-sided foam tape.

14. The assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 13 , wherein said insulative adhesive spacer comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive.

15. The assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 9 , wherein said at least one elongated electrical conductor is electrically connected to said anode assembly and emanates from said encasement material.

electrically connecting the sacrificial anode body of claim 1 to a steel reinforcement in steel reinforced concrete structure.

17. The method for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 16 , further comprising:

inserting said sacrificial anode body into a hole formed in said concrete structure.

18. The method of reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 16 , further comprising:

positioning said sacrificial anode body in contact with said steel reinforcement.

19. The method of reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 16 , wherein said first sacrificial metal and/or said second sacrificial metal is in the form of at least two perforated strips.

20. The method of reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 16 , wherein one of said first sacrificial metal or said second sacrificial metal is magnesium provided in an effective amount to cause migration of chloride ions away from said steel reinforcement of said concrete structure.

21. The sacrificial anode body of claim 1 , wherein said anode body comprises a layer of said first sacrificial metal sandwiched between two layers of said second sacrificial metal.

22. The assembly for reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement in a concrete structure of claim 9 , wherein said anode body comprises a layer of said first sacrificial metal positioned between the second sacrificial metal and the steel reinforcement.
