Abstract

Disclosed herein is a fluid transfer assembly for dispensing flowable material from a container, the fluid transfer assembly having a spout, a screw cap body, and an aseptic plug, wherein the aseptic plug is configured to form an aseptic seal with the screw cap body.

Claims (41)

1. A fluid transfer assembly for dispensing flowable material from a container, the fluid transfer assembly comprising:

a spout;

a screw cap body; and

an aseptic plug,

the aseptic plug comprising:

a plug body including an interior wall;

the plug body and the interior wall defining a plug chamber and a cavity, wherein the plug chamber is located above the cavity and the plug chamber has a first inner diameter and the cavity has a second inner diameter, and the first inner diameter is greater than the second inner diameter; and

a ledge that extends partially over the plug chamber;

wherein the aseptic plug is configured to form an aseptic seal with the screw cap body.

2. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the screw cap body is configured to be inserted into the spout such that the screw cap body is fixedly secured within the spout.

3. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the screw cap body includes a locking element configured to engage with a corresponding locking element on the spout.

The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the ledge of the aseptic plug is configured to receive a force in a first direction and a second direction opposite the first direction, wherein when force is applied in the first direction the plug is removed from the screw cap body, and when force is applied in the second direction, the plug is inserted into the screw cap body.

5. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plug body includes a sealing element on an outer surface thereof that sealingly engages an inner surface of the screw cap body.

6. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the ledge is part of a top surface and defines an opening that is offset from a center point of the top surface.

7. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plug chamber is bowl shaped.

8. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cavity is defined by a cylindrical wall of the plug body.

9. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plug body includes an upper portion that defines the plug chamber and a lower portion that defines the cavity.

10. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 9 , wherein the upper portion has a first outer diameter and the lower portion has a second outer diameter, and the first outer diameter is greater than the second outer diameter.

The fluid transfer assembly of claim 10 , wherein the screw cap body has an upper portion with a first inner diameter and a lower portion with a second inner diameter, and the first inner diameter is greater than the second inner diameter, the lower portion of the screw cap body receiving the lower portion of the plug body and the upper portion of the screw cap body receiving the upper portion of the plug body.

12. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 9 , wherein the screw cap body has a first length from its top to bottom and the aseptic plug has a second length from its top to bottom, and the second length is greater than half the first length.

13. A method of dispensing fluid using a fluid transfer assembly, the method comprising:

inserting a tool or a finger into an opening in a top surface of an aseptic plug having a chamber ledge, wherein the opening is offset from a center point of the top surface;

pulling with the tool or finger on the chamber ledge;

removing the aseptic plug from the fluid transfer assembly such that a seal between the aseptic plug and the fluid transfer assembly is broken and such that fluid can move from a container through and out of the fluid transfer assembly;

connecting a dispenser to the fluid transfer assembly such that the fluid moves through the fluid dispenser; and

dispensing the fluid.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising disconnecting the dispenser after the step of dispensing fluid.

The method of claim 13 , further comprising the step of inserting the aseptic plug into the fluid transfer assembly after the step of dispensing fluid, the aseptic plug having a sealing element that engages the fluid transfer assembly such that a fluid-tight seal is created between the aseptic plug and the fluid transfer assembly.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the plug chamber is bowl-shaped and located above a cavity defined by the aseptic plug.

17. A fluid transfer assembly for dispensing flowable material from a container, the fluid transfer assembly comprising:

a spout;

a screw cap body; and

an aseptic plug,

the aseptic plug comprising:

an upper portion defining a plug chamber;

a lower portion defining a cavity that is located below the plug chamber, wherein an interior wall separates the plug chamber and the cavity, and the plug chamber at its widest point has a greater inner diameter than the cavity does; and

a ledge that extends over the plug chamber, wherein the ledge is part of a top surface and defines an opening that is offset from a center point of the top surface;

wherein the aseptic plug is configured to form an aseptic seal with the screw cap body.

18. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 17 , wherein the plug chamber is bowl shaped.

19. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 17 , wherein the cavity is defined by a cylindrical wall.

20. The fluid transfer assembly of claim 17 , wherein the plug body includes a sealing element on an outer surface thereof that sealingly engages an inner surface of the screw cap body.
