Abstract

Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable media can obtain a spherical media content item that captures at least one scene from a plurality of different positions. A three-dimensional object with a plurality of faces that converge at a point is determined. At least a first portion of the spherical media content item is mapped to at least a first face in the plurality of faces.

Claims (36)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

obtaining, by a computing system, a media content item that contains at least one scene from a plurality of different positions;

determining, by the computing system, a three-dimensional object with one or more faces that converge at a point, wherein the three-dimensional object is a cone; and

mapping, by the computing system, at least a first portion of the media content item to at least a first face among the one or more faces.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein mapping at least the first portion of the media content item to at least the first face further comprises:

causing, by the computing system, the first portion of the media content item to be projected onto the first face.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the first portion corresponds to a first view of the scene, and wherein the first face corresponds to a base region of the three-dimensional object.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , the method further comprising:

causing, by the computing system, a second portion of the media content item to be projected onto a second face in the one or more faces, wherein the second face corresponds to a side region of the three-dimensional object.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the first portion being projected onto the first face has a higher graphical quality than the second portion being projected onto the second face.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein a graphical quality at which the second portion is being projected onto the second face becomes progressively lower as the second face converges at the point.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional object includes a base to which the one or more faces are connected, and wherein the one or more faces converge at an apex.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein the base corresponds to an oval shape.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the media content item corresponds to a spherical media content item.

10. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to perform:

obtaining a media content item that contains at least one scene from a plurality of different positions;

determining a three-dimensional object with one or more faces that converge at a point, wherein the three-dimensional object is a cone; and

mapping at least a first portion of the media content item to at least a first face among the one or more faces.

11. The system claim 10 , wherein mapping at least the first portion of the media content item to at least the first face further causes the system to perform:

causing the first portion of the media content item to be projected onto the first face.

12. The system claim 11 , wherein the first portion corresponds to a first view of the scene, and wherein the first face corresponds to a base region of the three-dimensional object.

13. The system claim 11 , wherein the system further performs:

causing a second portion of the media content item to be projected onto a second face in the one or more faces, wherein the second face corresponds to a side region of the three-dimensional object.

14. The system claim 13 , wherein the first portion being projected onto the first face has a higher graphical quality than the second portion being projected onto the second face.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by at least one processor of a computing system, cause the computing system to perform a method comprising:

obtaining a media content item that contains at least one scene from a plurality of different positions;

determining a three-dimensional object with one or more faces that converge at a point, wherein the three-dimensional object is a cone; and

mapping at least a first portion of the media content item to at least a first face among the one or more faces.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein mapping at least the first portion of the media content item to at least the first face further causes the computing system to perform:

causing the first portion of the media content item to be projected onto the first face.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the first portion corresponds to a first view of the scene, and wherein the first face corresponds to a base region of the three-dimensional object.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the computing system further performs:

causing a second portion of the media content item to be projected onto a second face in the one or more faces, wherein the second face corresponds to a side region of the three-dimensional object.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the first portion being projected onto the first face has a higher graphical quality than the second portion being projected onto the second face.
