Abstract

A surgical access assembly comprises a trocar and a surgical instrument. The trocar comprises a housing and an access tube extending distally from the housing. The housing comprises a hollow light emitter. The housing and the access tube define a lumen extending through the housing and the access tube. The hollow light emitter is configured to project light in the lumen. The surgical instrument comprises an end effector and a shaft extending proximally from the end effector. The shaft comprises an optical receiver positioned within reach of the light from the hollow light emitter. The shaft further comprises a light guide extending from the optical receiver along at least a portion of the shaft toward the end effector.

Claims (48)

1. A surgical access assembly, comprising:

a trocar, comprising:

a housing comprising a hollow light emitter; and

an access tube extending distally from the housing, wherein the housing and the access tube define a lumen extending through the housing and the access tube, and wherein the hollow light emitter is configured to project light in the lumen; and

a surgical instrument, comprising:

an end effector; and

a shaft extending proximally from the end effector, wherein the shaft is configured to pass through the access tube, and wherein the shaft comprises:

an optical receiver positioned within reach of the light from the hollow light emitter; and

a light guide extending from the optical receiver along at least a portion of the shaft toward the end effector.

2. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hollow light emitter and the optical receiver are in wireless optical communication with one another.

3. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the light guide comprises an end portion, and wherein the light is projectable distally from the end portion toward a space beyond the end effector.

4. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hollow light emitter comprises an inner surface, and wherein the light is radially projectable from the inner surface toward a central axis of the hollow light emitter, the central axis extending longitudinally through the lumen.

5. The surgical access assembly of claim 4 , wherein the inner surface extends circumferentially around the central axis.

6. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the lumen is configured to movably receive the shaft.

7. The surgical access assembly of claim 6 , wherein the hollow light emitter is configured to direct the light toward the optical receiver as the shaft is moved relative to the trocar.

8. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hollow light emitter is coupled to a fiber optic line that extends into the housing.

9. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the end effector comprises opposing jaws.

10. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the optical receiver extends longitudinally on a side of the shaft.

11. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hollow light emitter is a light emitter ring.

12. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the light is a structured light.

13. The surgical access assembly of claim 1 , wherein the light comprises visible and non-visible hyperspectral detection signals.

14. A surgical trocar for use with a surgical instrument that has a shaft with an optical receiver, the surgical trocar comprising:

a hollow external housing, comprising:

an inner wall defining an inner space within the hollow external housing, wherein the hollow external housing defines a central axis through the inner space; and

a light emitter configured to radially project light into the inner space defined by the inner wall, wherein the light emitter is configured to project the light toward the central axis; and

an access tube configured to extend from the hollow external housing through a body wall into a body cavity, wherein the hollow external housing and the access tube are configured to define an access port for the surgical instrument shaft to pass into the body cavity through the access tube, and wherein the light emitter is capable of maintaining a wireless optical communication with the optical receiver of the shaft in the inner space.

15. The surgical trocar of claim 14 , wherein the light emitter is configured to project the light toward the central axis at a portion of the shaft positioned transversely against the light emitter.

16. A surgical access assembly for use with a surgical instrument that includes a shaft and an end effector extending from the shaft, the surgical access assembly comprising:

a trocar, comprising:

a hollow trocar housing positionable outside a body wall;

an access tube configured to extend from the hollow trocar housing through the body wall into a body cavity, wherein the hollow trocar housing and the access tube are configured to define an access port for the surgical instrument into the body cavity, wherein the shaft is passable through the access tube into the body cavity;

a trocar end portion; and

first attachment features positioned at the trocar end portion; and

a visualization system, comprising:

a digital optics adaptor positionable against the hollow trocar housing;

a connector coupled to the digital optics adaptor, wherein the connector is extendable at least partially through the access port; and

an optical module, comprising:

a hollow housing, comprising:

a proximal end portion; and

a distal end portion;

a camera at the distal end portion of the hollow housing of the optical module;

a plurality of light emitters at the distal end portion of the hollow housing of the optical module; and

second attachment features at the proximal end portion of the hollow housing of the optical module, wherein the hollow housing of the optical module is repeatedly couplable to the trocar end portion by the first and second attachment features.

17. The surgical access assembly of claim 16 , wherein the hollow housing of the optical module is decouplable from the trocar end portion by the shaft of the surgical instrument.

18. The surgical access assembly of claim 17 , wherein the hollow housing of the optical module comprises an inner wall configured to catch the shaft during insertion of the surgical instrument into the body cavity.

19. The surgical access assembly of claim 18 , wherein the inner wall comprises at least one projection configured to catch the shaft.

20. The surgical access assembly of claim 19 , wherein at least one of the first attachment features and the second attachment features comprises a magnet.
