Abstract

A tracking device can securely communicate with a secondary device. The secondary device can provide locations associated with the tracking device to a tracking system. When the secondary device determines that the tracking device is lost (for instance, in response to no longer receiving communications from the tracking device), the secondary device can provide additional locations associated with the secondary device to the tracking system. The tracking system can store locations received before and after the tracking device was lost, and can provide these locations to the user for display within a map interface, enabling a user to digitally retrace the user's steps in order to aid the user in locating the lost tracking device.

Claims (29)

1. A method for locating a tracking device comprising:

providing, by a mobile device to a tracking server while the mobile device is within range of the tracking device, a first set of locations of the mobile device and an indication that the mobile device is within range of the tracking device as the mobile device moves within a geographic area;

providing, by the mobile device to the tracking server after the tracking device is lost and the mobile device moves out of range of the tracking device, a second set of locations of the mobile device and an indication that the mobile device is out of range of the tracking device as the mobile device continues to move within the geographic area; and

displaying, by a client device, a map interface showing the first set of locations and the second set of locations, each location in the first set of locations represented within the map interface by a first icon indicating the location of the mobile device and indicating that the mobile device was communicatively connected to the tracking device while at the location, and each location in the second set of locations represented within the map interface by a second icon visually distinct from the first icon indicating the location of the mobile device after the tracking device is lost and the mobile device lost connection with the tracking device, the second set of locations represented by a plurality of second icons and indicating a path within the map interface of the mobile device after the tracking device was lost and after the mobile device moved out of range of the tracking device, wherein the map interface further includes a playback element that, when selected, causes the display of the locations within the map interface to be animated in an order in which the locations are sent by the mobile device to the tracking server.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is determined to be within range of the tracking device while connected to the tracking device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the mobile device is determined to be out of range of the tracking device when a connection between the mobile device and tracking device is severed.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the mobile device is connected to the tracking device via Bluetooth.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the connection between the mobile device and tracking device is determined to be severed if a threshold amount of time passes without the mobile device receiving a communication from the tracking device.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the threshold amount of time is configurable by a user of the mobile device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device provides a location of the first set of locations to the tracking server in response to receiving a communication from the tracking device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device provides a location of the second set of locations to the tracking server in response to a threshold amount of time passing since a previous location of the second set of locations was provided to the tracking server.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device provides a location of the second set of locations to the tracking server in response to the mobile device moving a threshold distance from a most recent location of the second set of locations that was provided to the tracking server.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the map interface is displayed by the client device in response to receiving a request to classify the tracking device as lost.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is different from the client device.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein first icon and the second icon comprise different icons.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein first icon and the second icon comprise different colors of a same icon.

14. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing executable computer instructions for locating a tracking device, the instructions, when executed by a hardware processor, configured to cause the processor to perform steps comprising:

providing, by a mobile device to a tracking server while the mobile device is within range of the tracking device, a first set of locations of the mobile device and an indication that the mobile device is within range of the tracking device as the mobile device moves within a geographic area;

providing, by the mobile device to the tracking server after the tracking device is lost and the mobile device moves out of range of the tracking device, a second set of locations of the mobile device and an indication that the mobile device is out of range of the tracking device as the mobile device continues to move within the geographic area; and

displaying, by a client device, a map interface showing the first set of locations and the second set of locations, each location in the first set of locations represented within the map interface by a first icon indicating the location of the mobile device when the mobile device was within range of the tracking device, and each location in the second set of locations represented within the map interface by a second icon visually distinct from the first icon indicating the location of the mobile device after the tracking device is lost and the mobile device is out of the range of the tracking device, the second set of locations represented by a plurality of second icons and indicating a path within the map interface of the mobile device after the tracking device was lost and after the mobile device moved out of range of the tracking device, wherein the map interface further includes a playback element that, when selected, causes the display of the locations within the map interface to be animated in an order in which the locations are sent by the mobile device to the tracking server.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the mobile device is determined to be within range of the tracking device while connected to the tracking device.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the mobile device is determined to be out of range of the tracking device when a connection between the mobile device and tracking device is severed.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the mobile device is connected to the tracking device via Bluetooth.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the connection between the mobile device and tracking device is determined to be severed if a threshold amount of time passes without the mobile device receiving a communication from the tracking device.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein the threshold amount of time is configurable by a user of the mobile device.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the mobile device provides a location of the first set of locations to the tracking server in response to receiving a communication from the tracking device.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the mobile device provides a location of the second set of locations to the tracking server in response to a threshold amount of time passing since a previous location of the second set of locations was provided to the tracking server.

22. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the mobile device provides a location of the second set of locations to the tracking server in response to the mobile device moving a threshold distance from a most recent location of the second set of locations that was provided to the tracking server.

23. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the map interface is displayed by the client device in response to receiving a request to classify the tracking device as lost.
