Abstract

An antimicrobial composition is provided that comprises about 10.0 to about 40.0 wt. % of one or more C 1-8 alcohols, based on the total weight of the antimicrobial composition; and two or more of a surfactant; an enhancer; and a buffer. The pH of the composition is less than or equal to about 6.0 and the composition achieves a microbial log reduction of greater than 4.0 log CFU/ml at a contact time of 1 minute, in accordance ASTM E2783.

Claims (55)

1. An antimicrobial composition comprising:

from greater than 15 to less than 25 wt. % collectively of one or more C 1-8 alcohols, based on the total weight of the antimicrobial composition;

a surfactant;

an enhancer; and

a buffer,

wherein the total concentration of the buffer and the enhancer collectively is from 0.75 to 3 wt. %, based on the total weight of the antimicrobial composition,

wherein the pH of the antimicrobial composition is less than 5, wherein the antimicrobial composition is devoid of peroxide, and

wherein the antimicrobial composition achieves a microbial log reduction of greater than 4.0 log CFU/ml at a contact time of 1 minute, in accordance with ASTM E2783.

2. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein:

the surfactant comprises an alkyl polyglucoside;

the buffer comprises an organic acid, an inorganic acid, or salts thereof; and

the enhancer comprises a benzoate.

3. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the antimicrobial composition has a pH of from 3 to less than 5.

4. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the total concentration of the buffer and the enhancer collectively is from 1 to 3 wt. %, based on the total weight of the antimicrobial composition.

5. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from 18 to 22 wt. % collectively of the one or more C 1-8 alcohols.

6. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the one or more C 1-8 alcohols comprise ethanol.

7. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the buffer comprises an organic acid and salts thereof.

8. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the enhancer is selected from the group consisting of sorbic acid, sorbate compounds, benzoic acid, benzoate compounds, sulphur dioxide, sulphite compounds, natamycin, nitrate, nitrate compounds, salicylic acid, phenoxyethanol, thymol, cinnamaldehyde, methylparaben, propylparaben, sodium xylene sulfonate, 1,2 octane diol, 1,2 decane diol, and salts thereof.

9. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the antimicrobial composition has a pH of from 1.5 to 4.5.

10. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the antimicrobial composition further comprises a chelating agent.

11. The antimicrobial composition of claim 10 , wherein the antimicrobial composition consists essentially of: the one or more C 1-8 alcohols, the surfactant, the enhancer, the buffer, and the chelating agent.

12. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the surfactant is a non-ionic surfactant or mixture of non-ionic surfactants.

13. The antimicrobial composition of claim 12 , wherein the non-ionic surfactant is an ethoxylated alcohol, alkyl polyglucoside, a polyalkoxylated dimethicone, or a combination thereof.

14. A wipe comprising the antimicrobial composition of claim 1 .

15. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the antimicrobial composition results in no more than 15% of carriers positive within a contact time of no greater than 5 minutes in accordance with AOAC 961.02.

16. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises from 0.5 to 2 wt. % of the buffer, based on the total weight of the antimicrobial composition.

17. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein:

the surfactant comprises an alkyl polyglucoside;

the buffer comprises citric acid; and

the enhancer comprises sodium benzoate.

18. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein the wherein the antimicrobial composition achieves a microbial log reduction of greater than 4.0 log CFU/ml at a contact time of 30 seconds, in accordance with ASTM E2783.

19. An antimicrobial composition comprising:

from greater than 15 to less than 25 wt. % collectively of one or more C 1-8 alcohols, based on the total weight of the antimicrobial composition;

a surfactant;

an enhancer; and

from 0.5 to 2 wt. % of a buffer, based on the total weight of the antimicrobial composition,

wherein the total concentration of the buffer and the enhancer collectively is from 1 to 3 wt.

20. The antimicrobial composition of claim 19 , wherein:

the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant;
