Abstract

An occlusion catheter system includes a proximal hub having an inflation connection port and an inflation pathway. An inflation catheter member is connected to the proximal hub and has an inflation lumen. A stiffener member defines a longitudinal axis. The proximal end of the stiffener member is connected to the proximal hub. The stiffener member extends through a portion of the inflation lumen. An occlusion balloon has a proximal balloon end and a distal balloon end. A distal catheter member is positioned substantially on the longitudinal axis and is connected to the distal end of the stiffener member. An atraumatic tip is positioned on a distal end of the distal catheter member. The atraumatic tip has a substantially circular profile in a relaxed configuration. A pressure sensor is connected to the occlusion catheter system distally relative to the occlusion balloon and is connected to a processor by electrical wiring.

Claims (27)

1. An occlusion catheter system for full or partial occlusion of a vessel having a vessel diameter, the occlusion catheter system comprising:

a first catheter member;

a second catheter member having a lumen through which a portion of the first catheter member extends, at least a portion of the second catheter member being radially spaced from the first catheter member;

a third catheter member attached to a distal end of the first catheter member;

a proximal hub connected to a proximal end of the first catheter member and to a proximal end of the second catheter member, the proximal hub including a fluid pathway;

an occlusion balloon connected at a proximal end thereof to the second catheter member and at a distal end thereof to a proximal end of the third catheter member and defining an inflation space therebetween, the occlusion balloon being configured to define both radially projecting members and intervening radially projecting landing areas upon inflation of the occlusion balloon into a partially inflated state, the radially projecting members having a sufficient area to seat in apposition with an inner surface of the vessel and the radially projecting landing areas having sufficient area to form fluid flow channels with the inner surface of the vessel and channel fluid along a length of the occlusion balloon from a distal side of the occlusion balloon to a proximal side of the occlusion balloon, the fluid flow channels extending in a substantially curvilinear manner along the length of the occlusion balloon; and

a pressure relief valve connected to the fluid pathway of the proximal hub, the pressure relief valve being configured to open and release pressure at a predetermined pressure less than a burst pressure of the occlusion balloon,

wherein the first catheter member extends distally beyond the distal end of the occlusion balloon and into the third catheter member.

2. The occlusion catheter system of claim 1 , wherein:

the second catheter member includes an inflation lumen in communication with the fluid pathway of the proximal hub, and

the occlusion balloon is in communication with the inflation lumen and the fluid pathway; and

the occlusion catheter system further comprises:

a pump for delivering an inflation medium to the occlusion balloon or withdrawing the inflation medium from the occlusion balloon;

a controller in communication with the pump; and

a distal pressure sensor connected to the third catheter member, the distal pressure sensor configured to sense blood pressure in the vessel distal to the occlusion balloon and transmit the sensed blood pressure distal to the occlusion balloon to the controller, the controller being configured to compare the sensed blood pressure relative to a predetermined pressure set point to modulate inflation volume of the occlusion balloon via the pump.

3. The occlusion catheter system of claim 1 , further comprising a pressure sensor attached to the occlusion catheter system.

4. The occlusion catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the occlusion balloon is comprised of a semi-compliant balloon.

5. The occlusion catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid pathway of the proximal hub comprises a first fluid pathway in fluid communication with the first catheter member and a second fluid pathway in fluid communication with the second catheter member.

6. The occlusion catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the pressure relief valve is also configured to prevent back-flow of inflation fluid from the occlusion balloon.

7. The occlusion catheter system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a balloon pressure sensor configured to sense an inflation pressure within the occlusion balloon and transmit the sensed inflation pressure to the controller; and

a pressure reservoir in communication with the pump.

8. The occlusion catheter system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a proximal pressure sensor connected to the second catheter member to sense blood pressure proximal relative to the occlusion balloon, the proximal pressure sensor in communication with the controller.

9. The occlusion catheter system of claim 2 , wherein the controller is wired to the distal pressure sensor.

10. The occlusion catheter system of claim 2 , wherein the controller is in communication with the distal pressure sensor via wireless communication.

11. The occlusion catheter system of claim 2 , wherein the controller displays the sensed blood pressure.
