Abstract

Disclosed herein is a spinal implant with a solid frame and a porous inner layer. The implant may have a cavity defined by the porous inner layer. The solid frame may have one or more ribs extending from a medial wall to a lateral wall. The thickness of the porous layer may vary relative the thickness of the solid frame at various locations. An inserter to place a spinal implant and a method to perform same are also disclosed.

Claims (28)

1. A spinal implant comprising:

a solid frame having a medial or first side wall defining a medial or first side wall thickness, a lateral or second side wall defining a lateral or second side wall thickness, a posterior wall having a posterior wall thickness and an anterior wall having an anterior wall thickness, the anterior wall thickness being less than the posterior wall thickness;

a porous inner layer disposed within the solid frame, the porous inner layer having an exposed superior and an exposed inferior surface,

an inner first cavity extending in a superior-inferior direction and being defined by the porous inner layer and the solid frame;

wherein the solid frame has one or more ribs extending from the medial wall to the lateral wall above the superior and inferior surface, and a porous posterior wall thickness and a porous anterior wall thickness being less than the posterior wall thickness and the anterior wall thickness respectively, and a porous medial wall thickness and porous lateral wall thickness being greater than the medial wall thickness and the lateral wall thickness respectively,

wherein the anterior wall thickness is defined by an extension of the anterior wall beyond the porous inner layer, and the posterior wall thickness is defined by an extension of the posterior wall beyond the porous inner layer.

2. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the lateral wall thickness and the medial wall thickness are at least 0.25 mm.

3. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the lateral wall thickness and the medial wall thickness vary along an anterior-posterior direction, the wall thickness having a maximum thickness at the anterior and posterior ends and a minimum thickness in between the anterior and posterior ends.

4. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the ribs have a triangular cross-section, an apex of the triangular cross-section extending away from the spinal implant.

5. The spinal implant of claim 4 , wherein the ribs are configured to engage with vertebral end plates of a first and a second vertebral body to secure spinal implant between the vertebral bodies.

6. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the spinal implant has one or more cavities extending in a medial-lateral direction.

7. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the anterior wall and the posterior wall include at least one hole to engage with a surgical insertion tool.

8. The spinal implant of claim 7 , wherein inner walls of the hole are defined by the solid frame.

9. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the anterior and posterior walls include at least one hole in fluid communication with the inner cavity.

10. The spinal implant of claim 9 , wherein inner walls of the hole are defined by the porous inner layer and the solid frame.

11. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the solid frame is metal.

12. The spinal implant of claim 11 , wherein the metal is titanium.

13. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the inner porous layer has a mean pore diameter between 400 and 500 micron.

14. The spinal implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant is manufactured by an additive manufacturing process.

15. A spinal implant comprising:

a solid frame having a medial wall, a lateral wall, a posterior wall and an anterior wall, the posterior wall having a posterior wall thickness transverse to the posterior wall and the anterior wall having an anterior wall thickness transverse to the anterior wall, the anterior wall thickness being less than the posterior wall thickness;

a porous inner layer disposed within the solid frame, the porous layer having an exposed superior and an exposed inferior surface,

wherein the solid frame has one or more ribs extending from the medial wall to the lateral wall above the superior and inferior surface,

wherein the anterior wall thickness is defined by an extension of the anterior wall beyond the porous inner layer, and the posterior wall thickness is defined by an extension of the posterior wall beyond the porous inner layer.

16. An implant assembly comprising:

an inserter having a shaft with a proximal end and a distal end with external threading, a post extending distally from a base of the inserter, the post being parallel to the shaft;

the spinal implant of claim 15 , the spinal implant having a first and a second recess,

wherein the second recess is configured to receive the post and the first recess has internal threading to threadingly engage with the external threading to secure the inserter to the implant.
