Abstract

The disclosure concerns an antenna assembly having a substrate with an antenna radiating element and a ground conductor disposed on the substrate, the ground conductor further characterized by a plurality of ground resonators, wherein a length associated with each of the ground resonators increases as the ground resonators are distanced from the antenna radiating element. Additionally, a coaxial cable is routed around the antenna assembly for configuring the coaxial cable as an additional ground resonator associated with the antenna assembly. The resulting antenna provides wide band performance between 700 MHz and 2700 MHz with improved efficiency compared with conventional antennas.

Claims (32)

1. An antenna assembly, comprising:

an antenna radiating element; and

a ground conductor comprising a plurality of at least three sub-elements, wherein the sub-elements are ground resonators, and wherein the sub-elements are progressively larger in at least one dimension farther from the antenna radiating element;

wherein the antenna radiating element is positioned adjacent to the ground conductor.

2. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the antenna radiating element and the plurality of at least three sub-elements are disposed on a flexible substrate.

3. The antenna assembly of claim 2 , wherein the antenna radiating element is positioned at a corner of the flexible substrate.

4. The antenna assembly of claim 2 , wherein the ground conductor extends along a first edge of the flexible substrate.

5. The antenna assembly of claim 4 , wherein each of the first ground resonator, second ground resonator, and third ground resonator extends from the first edge of the flexible substrate.

6. The antenna assembly of claim 5 , wherein the first ground resonator further comprises a first body portion extending perpendicularly from the first edge, and a first terminal portion extending perpendicularly from the first body portion.

The antenna assembly of claim 5 , wherein the second ground resonator further comprises a second horizontal body portion extending perpendicularly from the first edge, a second vertical body portion extending perpendicularly from the second horizontal body portion, and a second terminal portion extending perpendicularly from the second vertical body portion.

The antenna assembly of claim 5 , wherein the third ground resonator further comprises a cleave portion extending from the first edge, a third horizontal body portion extending from the cleave portion, and a third vertical body portion extending perpendicularly from the third horizontal body portion.

9. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of at least three sub-elements further comprises: a first ground resonator, a second ground resonator, and a third ground resonator.

The antenna assembly of claim 9 , wherein the first ground resonator further comprises a first length associated therewith, the second ground resonator comprises a second length associated therewith, and the second length of the second ground resonator is greater than the first length of the first ground resonator.

11. The antenna assembly of claim 10 , wherein the third ground resonator comprises a third length associated therewith, and the third length of the third ground resonator is greater than each of the first length of the first ground resonator and the second length of the second ground resonator.

12. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a coaxial cable positioned around a periphery of the antenna assembly and coupled to a feed of the antenna radiating element and the ground conductor.

13. The antenna assembly of claim 12 , wherein the coaxial cable is configured to function as a fourth ground resonator, and further wherein the coaxial cable has a length larger than that of each of the plurality of at least three sub-elements.

14. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the ground conductor further comprises a ground patch and is configured to surround two sides of the antenna radiating element.

15. An antenna comprising:

a flexible substrate;

an antenna radiating element; and

a ground conductor positioned adjacent the antenna radiating element wherein the ground conductor extends along a portion of a first edge of the flexible substrate, the ground conductor further comprising a ground patch and a plurality of sub-elements configured to produce a distinct resonance wherein the plurality of sub-elements includes a first ground resonator comprising a first body portion extending perpendicularly from the first edge of the flexible substrate, and a first terminal portion extending perpendicularly from the first body portion of the first ground resonator.

16. The antenna of claim 15 further comprising a coaxial cable coupled to a feed of the antenna radiating element and further coupled to the ground conductor.

17. An antenna comprising:

a flexible substrate;

an antenna radiating element;

a ground conductor positioned adjacent the antenna radiating element wherein the ground conductor extends along a portion of a first edge of the flexible substrate, the ground conductor further comprising a ground patch and a plurality of sub-elements configured to produce a distinct resonance wherein the plurality of sub-elements includes a second ground resonator comprising a second horizontal body portion extending perpendicularly from the first edge of the flexible substrate, a second vertical body portion extending perpendicularly from the second horizontal body portion, and a second terminal portion extending perpendicularly from the second vertical body portion.

18. The antenna of claim 17 further comprising a coaxial cable coupled to a feed of the antenna radiating element and further coupled to the ground conductor.

19. An antenna comprising:

a flexible substrate;

an antenna radiating element;

a ground conductor positioned adjacent the antenna radiating element wherein the ground conductor extends along a portion of a first edge of the flexible substrate, the ground conductor further comprising a ground patch a plurality of sub-elements configured to produce a distinct resonance wherein the plurality of sub-elements includes a third ground resonator comprising a cleave portion extending from the first edge of the flexible substrate, a third horizontal body portion extending from the cleave portion, and a third vertical body portion extending perpendicularly from the third horizontal body portion.

20. The antenna of claim 19 further comprising a coaxial cable coupled to a feed of the antenna radiating element and further coupled to the ground conductor.
