Abstract

The invention relates to the use of a cannabis plant extract or a cannabinoid as a pharmaceutically active agent in the inhibition of tumour cell migration.

Claims (24)

16 . A method of inhibiting brain tumour cell migration in a human with a brain tumour, comprising administering to the human a cannabidiol in an amount effective to inhibit brain tumour cell migration.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the cannabidiol is produced from a Cannabis chemovar.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the cannabidiol is produced from the Cannabis chemovar at an amount greater than or equal to 90% (w/w) of the total amount of cannabinoids in the plant.

19 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the cannabidiol is in the form of a botanical drug substance.

20 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the effect of the cannabidiol is not mediated by CB1 or CB2 receptors.

21 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of cannabidiol is one which does not alter cell viability.

22 . A method of inhibiting central nervous system tumour cell migration in a human with a central nervous system tumour, comprising administering to the human cannabidiol in an amount effective to inhibit central nervous system tumour cell migration.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the cannabidiol is produced from a Cannabis chemovar.

24 . The method of claim 23 , wherein the cannabidiol is produced from the Cannabis chemovar at an amount greater than or equal to 90% (w/w) of the total amount of cannabinoids in the plant.

25 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the cannabidiol is in the form of a botanical drug substance.

26 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the effect of the cannabidiol is not mediated by CB1 or CB2 receptors.

27 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of cannabidiol is one which does not alter cell viability.

28 . A method of inhibiting glioma tumour cell migration in a human with glioma tumour, comprising administering to the human cannabidiol in an amount effective to inhibit glioma tumour cell migration.

29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the cannabidiol is produced from a Cannabis chemovar.

30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the cannabidiol is produced from the Cannabis chemovar at an amount greater than or equal to 90% (w/w) of the total amount of cannabinoids in the plant.

31 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the cannabidiol is in the form of a botanical drug substance.

32 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the effect of the cannabidiol is not mediated by CB1 or CB2 receptors.

33 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the therapeutically effective amount of cannabidiol is one which does not alter cell viability.

34 . A method for preparing a botanical drug substance, comprising:

i) providing at least one dried Cannabis plant variety for which the amount of cannabinoid is known;

ii) preparing an extract of said at least one Cannabis plant variety by maceration, percolation, solvent extraction, subcritical or supercritical fluid extraction, or hot gas extraction, or any combination thereof;

iii) formulating a botanical drug substance from said extract prepared in step (ii); and

iv) further formulating said botanical drug substance of step (iii) into a pharmaceutical composition with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent.
