Heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning network address control systems
View Patent ↗A control system for a heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system having control circuitry includes a microcontroller, a memory that stores a plurality of addresses, a communication bus configured to communicatively couple the microcontroller and a device of a plurality of devices of the HVAC system, and a fault register. The plurality of addresses includes a plurality of compatible addresses, a plurality of incompatible addresses, or any combination thereof. The microcontroller is programmed to monitor a signal address of a signal on the communication bus. The microcontroller is programmed to compare the signal address with the plurality of addresses, detect a fault event, and record the fault event in the fault register. Detection of the fault event includes the signal address not corresponding to a compatible address, the signal address corresponding to an incompatible address, or any combination thereof.
1. A control system for a heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system comprising control circuitry, the control circuitry comprising:
a microcontroller programmed to control operation of equipment of the HVAC system;
a memory that stores a plurality of addresses, wherein the plurality of addresses comprises a plurality of compatible addresses for use on a communication bus, a plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus, or any combination thereof, wherein the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus comprises an address associated with a furnace, an air handler, an energy recovery ventilation control, an expansion valve, a compressor speed control, a compressor stage control, or any combination thereof, or the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus does not comprise the address associated with the furnace, the air handler, the energy recovery ventilation control, the expansion valve, the compressor speed control, the compressor stage control, or any combination thereof;
the communication bus configured to communicatively couple the microcontroller and a device of a plurality of devices of the HVAC system, wherein the device comprises a secondary zone control circuitry of the control system; and
a fault register configured to record one or more faults corresponding to the plurality of devices of the HVAC system;
wherein the microcontroller is programmed to:
monitor a signal on the communication bus, wherein the signal comprises a signal address;
compare the signal address with the plurality of addresses;
detect a fault event comprising:
the signal address not corresponding to a compatible address of the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus;
the signal address corresponding to an incompatible address of the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus; or
any combination thereof; and
record the fault event in the fault register.

The control system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of addresses comprises the plurality of compatible addresses, and the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus comprises a compatible master control circuitry address, a compatible secondary control circuitry address, addresses of compatible zone sensors of the HVAC system, or any combination thereof.

The control system of claim 1 , wherein the memory stores the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus, the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus comprises addresses of legacy service tools, legacy HVAC equipment, legacy interface devices, legacy thermostats, legacy zone sensors, or a combination thereof.
4. The control system of claim 1 ,
wherein the communication bus comprises a first communication bus, and the secondary zone control circuitry comprises a first device;
wherein the control system comprises a second communication bus configured to communicatively couple the microcontroller and a second device of the plurality of devices of the HVAC system, wherein the second device comprises a master control circuitry of the control system configured to control a vapor compression system device of the equipment of the HVAC system; and
wherein the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the first communication bus comprises an equipment address associated with the vapor compression system device, or the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the first communication bus does not comprise the equipment address associated with the vapor compression system device.
5. The control system of claim 4 , wherein:
the plurality of addresses stored in the memory comprises a second plurality of compatible addresses for use on the second communication bus, a second plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the second communication bus, or any combination thereof, wherein the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the first communication bus is different than the second plurality of compatible addresses for use on the second communication bus, and the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the first communication bus is different than the second plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the second communication bus; and
the microcontroller is programmed to:
monitor a second signal on the second communication bus, wherein the second signal comprises a second signal address;
compare the second signal address with the plurality of addresses;
detect a second fault event on the second communication bus comprising:
the second signal address not corresponding to a compatible address of the second plurality of compatible addresses;
the second signal address corresponding to an incompatible address of the second plurality of incompatible addresses; or
any combination thereof; and
record the second fault event in the fault register.

The control system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus comprises an address of a master control circuitry of the control system coupled to the microcontroller via a second communication bus or the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus does not comprise the address of the master control circuitry.
7. The control system of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller is configured to provide an indication of the fault event based at least in part on recording the fault event in the fault register.
8. The control system of claim 7 , wherein the microcontroller is configured to provide the indication of the fault event via a lighting pattern emitted by light emitting diodes.
9. The control system of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller is programmed to store the fault event in the memory for a predetermined time period and then remove the fault event from the memory after the predetermined time period.
10. The control system of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller is programmed to:
transmit a query to the device coupled to the communication bus, the query requesting a device address of the device; and
receive the signal from the device in response to the query, wherein the signal address of the signal comprises the device address of the device.
11. The control system of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller is programmed to bar communication on the communication bus between the device and the microcontroller based upon the fault event.
12. A control system for a heating, ventilation, and/or air conditioning (HVAC) system, comprising:
master control circuitry comprising a first microcontroller programmed to control vapor compression system devices of the HVAC system; and
primary control circuitry comprising:
a second microcontroller programmed to control operation of equipment of the HVAC system;
a communication bus communicatively coupling the first microcontroller, the second microcontroller, and a device of a plurality of devices of the HVAC system, wherein the communication bus is configured to facilitate communication of a signal between at least two of the first microcontroller, the second microcontroller, and the device, wherein the signal comprises an address of a source device of the signal or a destination device of the signal;
a memory that stores a plurality of addresses, wherein the plurality of addresses comprises a plurality of compatible addresses, a plurality of incompatible addresses, or any combination thereof; and
a fault register configured to record one or more faults corresponding to the plurality of devices of the HVAC system;
wherein the second microcontroller is programmed to:
monitor the signal on the communication bus;
compare the address of the signal communicated on the communication bus with the plurality of addresses; and
detect a fault event comprising:
the address of the signal not corresponding to a compatible address of the plurality of compatible addresses;
the address of the signal corresponding to an incompatible address of the plurality of incompatible addresses; or
any combination thereof; and
record the fault event in the fault register,
wherein the communication bus comprises a first communication bus, and the device comprises a first device;
wherein the control system comprises a secondary zone control circuitry comprising:
a third microcontroller programmed to control a second device of the plurality of devices of the HVAC system; and
a second communication bus communicatively coupling the third microcontroller, the second microcontroller, and the second device of the plurality of devices of the HVAC system, wherein the second communication bus is configured to facilitate communication of a second signal between at least two of the second microcontroller, the third microcontroller, and the second device, wherein the second signal comprises a second address of a second source device of the second signal or a second destination device of the second signal,
wherein the second microcontroller is programmed to:
monitor the second signal on the second communication bus;
compare the second address of the second signal communicated on the second communication bus with the plurality of addresses;
detect a second fault event comprising:
the second address of the second signal not corresponding to a second compatible address of the plurality of compatible addresses;
the second address of the second signal corresponding to a second incompatible address of the plurality of incompatible addresses; or
any combination thereof; and
record the second fault event in the fault register.
13. The control system of claim 12 , wherein:
the first device comprises zoning equipment including a sensor, an interface device, a zone damper, or any combination thereof; and
the primary control circuitry comprises primary zone control circuitry.
14. The control system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of incompatible addresses comprises addresses associated with the vapor compression system devices, or the plurality of compatible addresses does not comprise addresses associated with the vapor compression system devices.
15. The control system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of addresses comprise the plurality of incompatible addresses, and the plurality of incompatible addresses comprises addresses of legacy service tools, legacy HVAC equipment, legacy interface devices, legacy thermostats, legacy zone sensors, or a combination thereof.
16. The control system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of addresses stored in the memory comprises a first plurality of addresses associated with the first communication bus and a second plurality of addresses associated with the second communication bus, wherein the first plurality of addresses is different than the second plurality of addresses.
17. A tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium, comprising instructions executable by at least one processor of a control system in a heating, ventilation, or air conditioning (HVAC) system that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:
identify a device address of a device coupled to a communication bus or a signal address of a signal transmitted on the communication bus coupled to control circuitry;
compare the device address or the signal address to a plurality of addresses stored in the tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium, wherein the plurality of addresses comprises a plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus and a plurality of incompatible addresses for the communication bus; and
detect a fault event comprising:
the device address or the signal address not corresponding to a compatible address of the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus;
the device address or the signal address corresponding to an incompatible address of the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus; or
any combination thereof; and
record the fault event in a fault register,
wherein the device comprises a secondary zone control circuitry of the control system, wherein the plurality of incompatible addresses for use on the communication bus comprises an address associated with a furnace, an air handler, an energy recovery ventilation control, an expansion valve, a compressor speed control, a compressor stage control, or any combination thereof, or the plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus does not comprise the address associated with the furnace, the air handler, the energy recovery ventilation control, the expansion valve, the compressor speed control, the compressor stage control, or any combination thereof.
18. The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein plurality of compatible addresses for use on the communication bus comprises a master control circuitry address, a secondary control circuitry address, and addresses of zone sensors of the HVAC system.
19. The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 17 , comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:
provide an indication of the fault event on an interface device coupled to the control circuitry.
20. The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 17 , comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:
bar communication on the communication bus between the control circuitry and the secondary zone control circuitry corresponding to the device address based upon the fault event; or
bar transmission of the signal on the communication bus based upon the fault event.
21. A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, comprising:
a port of a first control device configured to enable wiring the first control device to a second control device;
a memory configured to store a compatible address list that associates one or more control devices compatible with the port of the first control device;
a controller communicatively coupled to the port and the memory, wherein the controller is configured to:
determine a signal address received by the first control device via the port; and
provide an indication of compatibility of the second control device coupled to the port based on the signal address received via the port and the compatible address list; and
an additional port of the first control device communicatively coupled to the controller, wherein:
the additional port is configured to enable wiring the first control device to a third control device,
the memory is configured to store an additional compatible address list that associates one or more additional control devices compatible with the additional port of the first control device, and
the controller is configured to provide an additional indication of compatibility of the third control device coupled to the additional port based on an additional signal address received by the additional port and the additional compatible address list, wherein the compatible address list that associates the one or more control devices compatible with the port is different than the additional compatible address list that associates the one or more additional control devices compatible with the additional port.
22. The HVAC system of claim 21 , wherein:
the first control device comprises a zone control circuitry component; and
the one or more devices associated with the compatible address list comprise one or more master thermostats, one or more zone thermostats, one or more equipment controllers, or one or more secondary zone control circuitry components.
23. The HVAC system of claim 21 , comprising an electronic display communicatively coupled to the controller, wherein the controller is configured to instruct the electronic display to display a graphical user interface that visually indicates the indication of compatibility.
24. The HVAC system of claim 21 , wherein the controller is configured to:
communicate via the port of the first control device using a first communication protocol; and
communicate via the additional port of the first control device using a second communication protocol different from the first communication protocol.
25. The HVAC system of claim 21 , comprising an electronic display communicatively coupled to the controller, wherein:
the memory is configured to store an incompatible address list that associates another one or more control devices incompatible with the port of the first control device; and
the controller is configured to instruct the electronic display to provide, on a graphical user interface, an indication of incompatibility of the second control device coupled to the port based on the signal address received by the port, the compatible address list, and the incompatible address list.
26. The HVAC system of claim 25 , wherein the one or more control devices incompatible with the port of the first control device comprise legacy service tools, legacy HVAC equipment, legacy interface devices, legacy thermostats, legacy zone sensors, or a combination thereof.
27. The HVAC system of claim 21 , comprising a communication bus communicatively coupling the port to the second control device, wherein the first control device comprises an additional controller.
28. The HVAC system of claim 21 , comprising a fault register coupled to the controller and configured to record one or more faults, wherein the controller is programmed to:
detect a fault event based on the indication of compatibility; and
record the fault event in the fault register.
29. The HVAC system of claim 21 , wherein the first control device comprises a zoning controller and the second control device comprises a sensor, an interface device, a zone damper, or any combination thereof.
30. The HVAC system of claim 21 , wherein the first control device comprises the controller, and the controller is configured to control operation of equipment of the HVAC system.
31. The HVAC system of claim 30 , wherein the compatible address list comprises a compatible master control circuitry address, a compatible secondary control circuitry address, addresses of compatible zone sensors of the HVAC system, or any combination thereof.
32. The HVAC system of claim 21 , wherein:
the second control device comprises a vapor compression system device of the HVAC system;
the first control device comprises a master control circuitry of the HVAC system, and the master control circuitry is configured to control the vapor compression system device; and
the signal address comprises an address of the vapor compression system device; and
the compatible address list comprises the address of the vapor compression system device, wherein the controller is configured to provide the indication of compatibility of the vapor compression system device with the master control circuitry.
33. The HVAC system of claim 21 , wherein the controller is programmed to:
transmit a query to the second control device, the query requesting a device address of the second control device; and
receive a signal having the device address from the second control device in response to the query, wherein the device address comprises the signal address.

The HVAC system of claim 21 , wherein the memory is configured to store an incompatible address list that associates another one or more control devices incompatible with the port of the first control device, wherein the controller is programmed to bar communication between the first control device and the second control device in response to a determination that the signal address received by the first control device via the port is on the incompatible address list.
