Abstract

A retractable truck bed cover having an array of parallel aluminum slats joined together by connective hinges including leading and trailing edge configuration for improving the security of the cover by covering and concealing the seam between adjacent slats while improving the connective hinge's resistance to the effects of aging and/or exposure to temperature fluctuations. The truck bed cover connective hinge slat is designed to be in an array of discrete slats, which are joined to one another by means of joiner members secured at each end to slat end caps. The distal ends of the joiner members are attached to slat end caps at the distal ends of the slats, thereby preventing the joiner members from shrinking in relationship to the slats due to aging and I or exposure to temperature fluctuations.

Claims (26)

1. A cover for a truck bed of a vehicle, the cover comprising:

a plurality of slat members, each slat member defined by a slat surface having a leading edge and trailing edge, each slat member including a leading receptor channel extending downward below the slat surface proximate to the leading edge and a trailing receptor channel extending downward below the slat surface proximate to the trailing edge, each slat member having a first end and a second end opposite to the first end;

at least one flexible joiner member, each joiner member having a length extending adjacent to a length of the plurality of slat members, each joiner member having a hinge section disposed between a first connector section and a second connector section, said plurality of slat members including a first slat member and a second slat member, wherein the first connector section is sized and shaped to be received within a trailing receptor channel of the first slat member and the second connector section is sized and shaped to be received within a leading receptor channel of the second slat member, said first and second slat members being locked together contiguously by one of the at least one joiner member in a manner which enables the slat members to move between a flat position on a same plane relative to each other and an acute angular position relative to each other, each joiner member having a first end and a second end opposite to the first end; and

a plurality of slat end caps configured to secure to the first and second ends of said plurality of slat members and the first and second ends of the at least one joiner member so as to reduce the likelihood that the at least one joiner member will contract along its length.

2. The cover of claim 1 , wherein each joiner member comprises a retention aperture extending within a portion of the length of said joiner member, the retention aperture configured to align with a hole in one of said plurality of slat end caps, and wherein the slat end cap is secured to one of the first or second ends of the at least one joiner member with a fastener which extends through the hole of the slat end cap and into the retention aperture of the joiner member.

3. The cover of claim 2 , wherein the retention aperture is positioned within the first connector section.

4. The cover of claim 1 , wherein the trailing receptor channel of the first slat member comprises an open end facing towards the leading receptor channel of the second slat member, and wherein the leading receptor channel of the second slat member comprises an open end which faces towards the trailing receptor channel of the first slat member.

5. The cover of claim 1 , wherein each of said plurality of slat members includes a slat hole in the slat surface proximate to each of the first and second ends of the slat members, and wherein a first slat end cap is secured to one of the first or second ends of one of said plurality of slat members with a fastener, the fastener configured to pass through the slat hole and through a hole in said first slat end cap, said first slat end cap being one of said plurality of slat end caps.

6. The cover of claim 1 , wherein said leading receptor channel and said trailing receptor channel of the plurality of slat members are mirror images of one another, and wherein, for each joiner member, the first and second connector sections are mirror images of one another.

7. The cover of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of slat members comprise aluminum and the connector sections of the at least one joiner member comprise silicon.

8. The cover of claim 1 , wherein the hinge section is defined by a narrowing area.

9. The cover of claim 1 , wherein, when said first and second slat members are locked together contiguously by said joiner member and are in the flat position, edges of the first and second slat members form a half lap splice lap joint.

10. The cover of claim 1 , wherein each of said plurality of slat end caps comprise an end flange and a tongue flange, the end flange configured to abut one of the first or second ends of the at least one joiner member when the slat end cap is secured thereto, and wherein the tongue flange comprises a planar portion configured to fit within a space between the leading and trailing receptor channels of the slat members and a sleeve portion configured to align with and sleeve over a portion of the trailing receptor channel, the sleeve portion configured to provide a bearing surface underneath the slat members.

11. A cover for a truck bed of a vehicle, the cover comprising:

a plurality of slat members, each defined by a slat surface having a leading edge and trailing edge, each of said plurality of slat members including a leading receptor channel extending downward below the slat surface proximate to the leading edge and a trailing receptor channel extending downward below the slat surface proximate to the trailing edge; and

at least one flexible joiner member, each joiner member having a hinge section disposed between a first connector section and a second connector section, wherein the first connector section is sized and shaped to be received within a trailing receptor channel of a first slat member and the second connector section is sized and shaped to be received within a leading receptor channel of a second slat member, said first and second slat members being locked together contiguously by one of the at least one joiner member in a manner which enables the slat members to move between a flat position on a same plane relative to each other and an acute angular position relative to each other, each joiner member comprising at least one retention aperture extending along a portion of a length of each joiner member;

wherein the at least one flexible joiner member is configured to secure to a slat end cap with a fastener, the fastener configured to pass through a hole in the slat end cap and into the at least one retention aperture of the joiner member.

12. The cover of claim 11 , further comprising the slat end cap.

13. The cover of claim 12 , wherein each of the plurality of slat members includes a slat hole in the slat surface, and wherein said slat end cap is configured to secure to one of said plurality of slat members with a fastener, the fastener configured to pass through the slat hole and through a hole in said slat end cap.

14. The cover of claim 12 , wherein said slat end cap comprises an end flange and a tongue flange, the end flange configured to abut an end of the joiner member when the slat end cap is secured thereto, and wherein the tongue flange comprises a planar portion configured to fit within a space between the leading and trailing receptor channels of one of said plurality of slat members and a sleeve portion configured to align with and sleeve over a portion of the trailing receptor channel, the sleeve portion configured to provide a bearing surface underneath the slat member.

15. The cover of claim 11 , wherein the at least one retention aperture is positioned within the first connector section of the joiner member.

16. The cover of claim 11 , wherein the trailing receptor channel of the first slat member comprises an open end facing towards the leading receptor channel of the second slat member, and wherein the leading receptor channel of the second slat member comprises an open end facing towards the trailing receptor channel of the first slat member.
