Abstract

The present invention comprises a system and method for receiving at an application server a request for a software application from a mobile device wherein the request includes an indicator that allows the application server to tell whether the mobile device currently has a software application interpreter installed, sending the software application interpreter to a cellular wireless network for provisioning to the mobile device if the indicator shows that the mobile device does not have the application interpreter installed, and sending the software application to a cellular wireless network for provisioning to the mobile device. The invention further comprises a system and method for updating the software application in a way that seems automatic to a user.

Claims (41)

1. A computer system for deploying software updates to mobile devices, comprising:

at least one memory storing instructions; and

at least one hardware processor to execute the instructions to perform operations, comprising:

receiving a communication comprising a version identifier of a software application on a mobile device;

determining, based at least in part on analyzing the received version identifier of the software application in view of a second version identifier associated with an available version of the software application, that an updated version of the software application is available;

determining that the updated version of the software application is approved for release based on at least a user selection at a device identifying the updated version of the software application as ready for release to the mobile device;

associating a user identifier with the updated version of the software application;

providing, to the mobile device and based on the determining that the updated version of the software application is approved for release, the updated version of the software application to be installed on the mobile device and the associated user identifier, wherein the provided software application is agnostic to an operating system on the mobile device, and is configured to be interpreted by the mobile device and distributed to a plurality of mobile device types.

2. The computer system of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the updated version of the software application and the second version identifier from a development environment.

3. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the provided software application is to execute in a mobile runtime environment on the mobile device.

4. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the communication is associated with a request to update the software application on the mobile device.

5. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the updated version of the software application is provided in response to an update flag previously transmitted to the mobile device.

6. A computer system for deploying software updates to mobile devices, comprising:

at least one memory storing instructions; and

at least one hardware processor to execute the instructions to perform operations, comprising:

receiving a communication comprising a version identifier of a software application on a mobile device;

determining, based at least in part on analyzing the received version identifier of the software application in view of a second version identifier associated with an available version of the software application, that an updated version of the software application is available;

determining that the updated version of the software application is approved for release based on at least a user selection at a device identifying the updated version of the software application as ready for release to the mobile device;

associating a user identifier with the updated version of the software application;

transmitting an update flag to the mobile device based on the determining that the updated version of the software application is approved for release; and

providing the updated version of the software application to be installed on the mobile device and the associated user identifier based on a request from the mobile device in response to the update flag, wherein the provided software application is agnostic to an operating system on the mobile device, and is configured to be interpreted by the mobile device and distributed to a plurality of mobile device types.

7. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein analyzing the received version identifier of the software application in view of the second version identifier further comprises comparing the received version identifier with the second version identifier and determining a mismatch between the received version identifier and the second version identifier.

8. The computer system of claim 7 , wherein the mismatch between the received version identifier and the second version identifier indicates that the updated version of the software application is more recent than the software application on the mobile device.

9. A computer system for deploying software updates to mobile devices, comprising:

at least one memory storing instructions; and

at least one hardware processor to execute the instructions to perform operations, comprising:

receiving a communication comprising a version identifier of a software application on a mobile device;

determining, based at least in part on analyzing the received version identifier of the software application in view of a second version identifier associated with an available version of the software application, the software application on the mobile device is unapproved for release and that an updated version of the software application is available;

determining that the updated version of the software application is approved for release based on at least a user selection at a device identifying the updated version of the software application as ready for release to the mobile device;

associating a user identifier with the updated version of the software application;

transmitting an update flag to the mobile device based on the determining that the updated version of the software application is approved for release; and

providing, to the mobile device and based on the determining, the updated version of the software application to be installed on the mobile device and the associated user identifier, wherein the provided software application is agnostic to an operating system on the mobile device, and is configured to be interpreted by the mobile device and distributed to a plurality of mobile device types.

10. The computer system of claim 5 , wherein the update flag is transmitted to the mobile device automatically without a request from the mobile device.

11. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the communication is received from the mobile device during a first session with the mobile device and the updated version of the software application is provided to the mobile device in a subsequent session.

12. The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the communication is received over a first network, and the updated version of the software application is provided to the mobile device over a second network.

13. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the provided software application is transmitted to the mobile device based on a hypertext transfer protocol.

14. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the provided software application is written in an extensible markup language that is to be interpreted by a software application interpreter on the mobile device.

15. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device comprises a software application interpreter comprising a mobile runtime environment to translate between instructions specific to a mobile device type associated with the mobile device and the provided software application.

16. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device comprises a software application interpreter comprising a mobile runtime environment to translate between instructions specific to an operating system of the mobile device and the provided software application.

17. The computer system of claim 1 , wherein the communication further comprises an indication that a software application interpreter is unavailable on the mobile device, and, before providing the available version of the software application, transmitting the software application interpreter to the mobile device.
