Vacuum powered saline injection system
A method and apparatus for injecting a saline solution into an open cavity of a patient's body, and, alternatively, vacuuming fluids from the open cavity during laparoscopic surgery that provides constant feed and amplified pressure to provide a steady fluid output, in a disposable, single use handheld surgical device.
1. A system for injecting and removing fluid during laparoscopic surgery, comprising:
a pump portion; and
a wand portion connected in fluidic communication with the pump portion;
wherein the pump portion comprises:
a vacuum powered pump motor connectable to a vacuum source;
a first generally cylindrical chamber having a fluidic inlet chamber portion and a fluid storage portion, the first generally cylindrical chamber having a first major axis extending therethrough and being connected to the vacuum powered pump motor;
a first spring-biased disk positioned in the first generally cylindrical chamber and oriented perpendicularly with respect to the first major axis; and
a fluid outlet connected in fluidic communication with the first generally cylindrical chamber;
a valve operationally connected to the vacuum powered pump motor;
a second generally cylindrical chamber;
a second spring-biased disk positioned in the second generally cylindrical chamber and operationally connected to the valve;
wherein when the vacuum powered pump motor is connected to provide vacuum to the first generally cylindrical chamber, the first spring-biased disk is forced to move against the spring-bias of the first spring-biased disk to draw the fluid from a fluid source into the fluidic inlet chamber portion and when the vacuum powered pump motor is connected to atmosphere the first spring-biased disk is forced to move by action of the spring-bias of the first spring-biased disk to provide the fluid from the fluidic inlet chamber portion toward the second generally cylindrical chamber, and when the second generally cylindrical chamber is filled with the fluid, an urging force automatically pauses action of the vacuum powered pump motor to stop drawing the fluid from the fluid source into the fluidic inlet chamber portion until fluid is extracted from the pump portion, and
wherein when the fluid outlet is open the fluid flows from the pump portion to the wand portion,
wherein the wand portion comprises an elongated cannula that comprises a diathermy hook.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the valve is an over-the-center toggle valve system.
3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the over-the-center toggle valve system comprises an over-the-center spring loaded toggle assembly that strikes a spring driven valve.
4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the over-the-center toggle valve system comprises a connecting lever, coupled at each end to push rods and are connected to an over-the-center-toggle via a second set of interposed push rods.
5. A system for injecting and removing fluid during laparoscopic surgery, comprising:
a pump portion; and
a wand portion connected in fluidic communication with the pump portion;
wherein the pump portion comprises:
a vacuum powered pump motor connectable to a vacuum source;
a first generally cylindrical chamber having a fluidic inlet chamber portion and a fluid storage portion, the first generally cylindrical chamber having a first major axis extending therethrough and being connected to the vacuum powered pump motor;
a first spring-biased disk positioned in the first generally cylindrical chamber and oriented perpendicularly with respect to the first major axis; and
a fluid outlet connected in fluidic communication with the first generally cylindrical chamber;
a valve connected to the vacuum powered pump motor;
a second generally cylindrical chamber;
a second spring-biased disk positioned in the second generally cylindrical chamber and operationally connected to the valve;
wherein when the vacuum powered pump motor is connected to provide vacuum to the first generally cylindrical chamber, a first urging force is applied to one side of the first spring-biased disk to move against the spring-bias of the first spring-biased disk and to draw the fluid from a fluid source into the fluidic inlet chamber portion,
and when the second generally cylindrical chamber is filled with the fluid from the fluidic inlet chamber portion, a second urging force opposing the first urging force automatically pauses action of the vacuum powered pump motor to stop drawing the fluid from the fluid source into the fluidic inlet chamber portion until fluid is extracted from the pump portion, and
wherein when the fluid outlet is open the fluid flows from the pump portion to the wand portion.
6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the valve is an over-the-center toggle valve system.
7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the over-the-center-toggle valve system comprises an over-the-center spring loaded toggle assembly that strikes a spring driven valve.
8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the over-the-center toggle valve system comprises a connecting lever, coupled at each end to push rods and are connected to an over-the-center-toggle via a second set of interposed push rods.
