Abstract

A method of managing inventory allocations includes the step of receiving, in a data processing apparatus, data relating to the sale of items of inventory allocated to respective re-sellers. The date is processed to obtain data relating to sales performance of one or more of the respective re-sellers. The method includes adjusting a price for which inventory allocated to that respective re-seller is to be sold by depending on said data relating to the sales performance of the respective re-sellers and/or re-allocation inventory items from that said respective re-seller to other respective re-sellers. The invention extends to a software product and to a system.

Claims (52)

1. A computer-implemented method for managing inventory allocations, the computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving sale data, the sale data relating to a sale, in a time period, of inventory allotments allocated to respective distribution channels;

upon receipt of the sale data, processing the sale data to obtain performance data relating to sales performance the respective distribution channels in the time period by calculating a performance rating for each channel, the performance rating being a function of at least a proportion of a number of allotments sold in that channel in the time period relative to at least one of:

a number of allotments allocated to that channel for sale;

a number of allotments available for sale in the channel; and

a total number of allotments sold across the respective distribution channels in the time period; and

using the performance rating in near real-time, carrying out at least one:

adjusting a price for which inventory allotments allocated to at least that respective channel is to be sold; and

re-allocating inventory allotments to or from at least that said respective channel from or to other channels.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which the respective distribution channels include near real-time channels, the method further comprising receiving the sale data cyclically from the near real-time channels.

3. The method as claimed in claim 2 , in which processing the sale data is carried out subsequent to receiving the sale data.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which the respective distribution channels include request-based channels, the method further comprising polling the request-based channels to receive the sale data.

5. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which processing the sale data is carried out cyclically at predetermined time periods.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which processing the sale data is carried out upon request.

7. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which processing the sale data includes comparing a performance rating of each channel to performance ratings of the respective distribution channels.

8. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which processing the sale data includes comparing the performance rating for each channel to an average performance rating over the respective distribution channels.

9. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which the inventory allotments allocated to the respective distribution channels have at least one common characteristic.

10. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which processing the sale data to calculate the performance rating for each channel includes, per channel and in each time period:

calculating a value of P as a proportion of a total number of allotments sold by that channel in the time period relative to the total number of allotments sold across the respective distribution channels in the time period; and

comparing the value of P for that channel to an average value of P across the respective distribution channels to calculate a change of each value of P relative to the average of the value of P.

11. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which processing said data to calculate the performance rating for each channel includes, per channel and in each time period:

calculating a value P as a proportion of a total number of allotments sold by that channel in the time period relative to the total number of allotments sold across the respective distribution channels in the time period; and

calculating an average extent of change of the value P for that channel relative to the average extent of change of the value of P across the respective distribution channels.

12. The method as claimed in claim 11 , which further comprises obtaining a result by subtracting an average percentage change in P across the respective distribution channels from a percentage change in P in that channel and dividing the result by a standard deviation of the percentage change in P in each channel over a square root of the number of channels.

13. The method as claimed in claim 1 , which further comprises using the performance rating and re-allocating inventory allotments to or from at least that said respective channel from or to other channels.

14. The method as claimed in claim 13 , which further comprises, per channel, checking whether each of the channels has no further allotments for sale.

15. The method as claimed in claim 14 , which further comprises determining, per channel, whether any allotments need to be transferred to that channel from other channels by processing the data such that the performance rating is determined by multiplying a proportion of a number of allotments sold in that channel in the time period relative to the number of allotments sold across all the channels in that time period by the total number of allotments still available for resale in all the channels after that time period.

16. The method as claimed in claim 1 , which further comprises receiving the sale data from a remote booking engine, in a form of booking data, via a distribution channel.

17. The method as claimed in claim 16 , which further comprises storing the sale data in a data processing table, the sale data including at least identification data relating to the inventory allotments, and processing the sale data includes selecting records consecutively from the data processing table in an order of entry into the data processing table.

18. The method as claimed in claim 1 , in which processing the sale data to obtain the performance data includes calculating a ratio between inventory allotments sold per channel and a total number of allotments sold at a point in time to generate a value “P”, and artificially allocating allotments to each channel depending on the value P for that channel, such that the performance rating can be based on a proportion of allotments sold in a channel compared to proportions of allotments sold in other channels.

19. A computing device comprising:

a memory; and

at least one processor configured to perform a method for managing inventory allocations, the method comprising:

receiving sale data, the sale data relating to a sale, in a time period, of inventory allotments allocated to respective distribution channels;

upon receipt of the sale data, processing the sale data to obtain performance data relating to sales performance the respective distribution channels in the time period by calculating a performance rating for each channel, the performance rating being a function of at least a proportion of a number of allotments sold in that channel in the time period relative to at least one of:

a number of allotments allocated to that channel for sale;

a number of allotments available for sale in the channel; and

a total number of allotments sold across the respective distribution channels in the time period;

and

using the performance rating in near real-time, carrying out at least one:

adjusting a price for which inventory allotments allocated to at least that respective channel is to be sold; and

re-allocating inventory allotments to or from at least that said respective channel from or to other channels.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing computer instructions to be implemented on at least one computing device including at least one processor, the computer instructions when executed by the at least one processor cause the at least one computing device to perform a method for managing inventory allocations, the method comprising:

receiving sale data, the sale data relating to a sale, in a time period, of inventory allotments allocated to respective distribution channels;

upon receipt of the sale data, processing the sale data to obtain performance data relating to sales performance the respective distribution channels in the time period by calculating a performance rating for each channel, the performance rating being a function of at least a proportion of a number of allotments sold in that channel in the time period relative to at least one of:

a number of allotments allocated to that channel for sale;

a number of allotments available for sale in the channel; and

a total number of allotments sold across the respective distribution channels in the time period;

and

using the performance rating in near real-time, carrying out at least one of:

adjusting a price for which inventory allotments allocated to at least that respective channel is to be sold; and

re-allocating inventory allotments to or from at least that said respective channel from or to other channels.
