Abstract

Universal synchronization of profiles of audience members targeted for the delivery of content. A unique global identifier may be assigned to and used to manage a profiled audience member. This identifier may also be associated to an authoritative identifier and cookie information used in connection with the collection of profile data. An authoritative identifier may be received in connection with activity, and might not be accompanied by a global identifier. The authoritative identifier may then be used to identify the global identifier, which in turn may be used to identify the cookie related information of record for the profiled audience member. Comparing the cookie related information to previously retained cookie information may be used to determine that the cookie information for a particular, profiled audience member has changed, so that it can be restored.

Claims (58)

1. A computer implemented method for universal synchronization of profiles of client computers targeted for the delivery of content over a computer network, the method comprising:

associating, by at least one processor, in a database, profile data of a client computer with a global profile identifier;

associating, in the computer database, the global profile identifier with a first set of cookie related information;

using an authoritative identification of the client computer to correlate the client computer to the global profile identifier;

receiving, over the computer network, a second set of cookie related information from the profiled client computer; and

updating the second set of cookie related information with portions of the first set of cookie related information not included in the second set of cookie related information.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying the client computer from among a plurality of different client computers using the global profile identifier;

associating the client computer with a segment of client computers responsive to identification of the client computer;

transmitting a segment-targeting cookie having a segment identifier to the client computer, the segment identifier being different from the global profile identifier;

identifying targeted content to be transmitted to the client computer based on the association of the client computer with a segment of client computers; and

transmitting the identified targeted content to the client computer.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing a segment-targeting cookie having a segment identifier on the client computer wherein the segment identifier is selected based on the set of profile data associated with the client computer; and

delivering targeted content to the client computer in response to determining the segment identifier in the segment-targeting cookie.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the profile data includes a behavioral attribute.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the profile data includes a characteristic attribute.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of cookie related information includes client computer identification information.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second set of cookie related information includes segment identification information.

8. A system for universal synchronization of profiles of client computers targeted for the delivery of content over a computer network, the system including:

a data storage device that stores instructions for universal synchronization of profiles of client computers targeted for the delivery of content over a computer network; and

a processor configured to execute the instructions to perform a method including:

associating, by at least one processor, in a database, profile data of a client computer with a global profile identifier;

associating, in the computer database, the global profile identifier with a first set of cookie related information;

using an authoritative identification of the client computer to correlate the client computer to the global profile identifier;

receiving, over the computer network, a second set of cookie related information from the profiled client computer; and

updating the second set of cookie related information with portions of the first set of cookie related information not included in the second set of cookie related information.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the instructions to perform the method including:

identifying the client computer from among a plurality of different client computers using the global profile identifier;

associating the client computer with a segment of client computers responsive to identification of the client computer;

transmitting a segment-targeting cookie having a segment identifier to the client computer, the segment identifier being different from the global profile identifier;

identifying targeted content to be transmitted to the client computer based on the association of the client computer with a segment of client computers; and

transmitting the identified targeted content to the client computer.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the instructions to perform the method including:

storing a segment-targeting cookie having a segment identifier on the client computer wherein the segment identifier is selected based on the set of profile data associated with the client computer; and

delivering targeted content to the client computer in response to determining the segment identifier in the segment-targeting cookie.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the profile data includes a behavioral attribute.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the profile data includes a characteristic attribute.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first set of cookie related information includes client computer identification information.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second set of cookie related information includes segment identification information.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to perform a method for universal synchronization of profiles of client computers targeted for the delivery of content over a computer network, the method comprising:

associating, by at least one processor, in a database, profile data of a client computer with a global profile identifier;

associating, in the computer database, the global profile identifier with a first set of cookie related information;

using an authoritative identification of the client computer to correlate the client computer to the global profile identifier;

receiving, over the computer network, a second set of cookie related information from the profiled client computer; and

updating the second set of cookie related information with portions of the first set of cookie related information not included in the second set of cookie related information.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising:

identifying the client computer from among a plurality of different client computers using the global profile identifier;

associating the client computer with a segment of client computers responsive to identification of the client computer;

transmitting a segment-targeting cookie having a segment identifier to the client computer, the segment identifier being different from the global profile identifier;

identifying targeted content to be transmitted to the client computer based on the association of the client computer with a segment of client computers; and

transmitting the identified targeted content to the client computer.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising:

storing a segment-targeting cookie having a segment identifier on the client computer wherein the segment identifier is selected based on the set of profile data associated with the client computer; and

delivering targeted content to the client computer in response to determining the segment identifier in the segment-targeting cookie.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the profile data includes a behavioral attribute.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the profile data includes a characteristic attribute.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the first set of cookie related information includes client computer identification information.
