Abstract

An apparatus, such as an electrical device or a wall box, may have a mounting mechanism that may be configured to mount the apparatus to a wall in a manner that may facilitate secure fastening to the wall. The apparatus may comprise at least one mounting clamp that may have a fin and a drum that receives a mounting screw. The fin of the mounting clamp may be configured to be located within a pocket formed in the body. When a mounting screw is driven, the mounting clamp may rotate from the pocket into a position in which the drum of the mounting clamp may be received in a channel formed in the body. The drum may be configured to move through the channel as the mounting screw is further driven. The gap may be sized to retain the mounting clamp within the channel as the drum moves therethrough.

Claims (29)

1. A wall box comprising:

a body defining an opening configured to receive one or more electrical devices, the body comprising a flange that at least partially surrounds the opening;

a mounting screw that extends through a channel formed in the body, the mounting screw having a head that is maintained adjacent to the flange; and

a mounting clamp having a fin and a drum that defines a bore configured to receive the mounting screw, the fin of the mounting clamp configured to be located in a pocket formed in the body;

wherein the wall box is configured to mount within a wall, wherein the fin of the mounting clamp is configured to rotate from the pocket when the head of the mounting screw is driven, wherein the drum of the mounting clamp is configured to move within the channel as the head of the mounting screw is driven, and wherein the fin of the mounting clamp is configured to extend through a gap defined by the channel, and

wherein the gap and the drum are further configured such that the gap defines a first width and the drum defines a second width that is greater than the first width such that the gap prevents the drum of the mounting clamp from exiting the channel through the gap.

2. The wall box of claim 1 , wherein the drum of the mounting clamp is further configured to move within the channel until the fin abuts the wall such that the wall is clamped between the flange and the fin.

3. The wall box of claim 2 , wherein the fin of the mounting clamp defines a front surface that is configured to abut the wall when the wall is clamped between the flange and the fin of the mounting clamp.

4. The wall box of claim 3 , wherein the drum of the mounting clamp defines a foot that extends beyond the front surface of the fin, wherein the foot is located within the channel when the fin is located in the pocket.

5. The wall box of claim 1 , wherein the fin of the mounting clamp is further configured to rotate from the pocket until a knee of the mounting clamp contacts an edge surface of the pocket.

6. The wall box of claim 5 , wherein the fin is substantially perpendicular to a sidewall of the body when the knee contacts the edge surface of the pocket.

7. The wall box of claim 1 , wherein a terminal end of the mounting screw that is distal from the head is free-floating.

8. The wall box of claim 1 , wherein the wall box further comprises a plurality of mounting clamps and respective mounting screws.

9. The wall box of claim 1 , wherein the drum of the mounting clamp is further configured to be driven from the channel to the pocket to remove the wall box from the wall.

10. The wall box of claim 1 , wherein the wall box is at least partially transparent to allow the mounting clamp to be seen through the body when the fin of the mounting clamp is located in the pocket.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a body having a front surface;

a mounting screw that extends through a channel formed in the body, the mounting screw having a head that is maintained adjacent to the front surface of the body; and

a mounting clamp having a fin and a drum that defines a bore configured to receive the mounting screw, the fin of the mounting clamp configured to be located in a pocket formed in the body,

wherein the fin of the mounting clamp is configured to rotate from the pocket when the head of the mounting screw is driven, wherein the drum of the mounting clamp is configured to move within the channel as the head of the mounting screw is driven, and wherein the fin of the mounting clamp is configured to extend through a gap defined by the channel, and

wherein the gap and the drum are further configured such that the gap defines a first width and the drum defines a second width that is greater than the first width such that the gap prevents the drum of the mounting clamp from exiting the channel through the gap.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the body further comprises a flange that at least partially surrounds the body, the flange defining the front surface of the body.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the apparatus is configured to mount within a wall.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the drum of the mounting clamp is further configured to move within the channel until the fin abuts the wall such that the wall is clamped between the flange and the fin, the fin of the mounting clamp defining a front surface that is configured to abut the wall when the wall is clamped between the flange and the fin of the mounting clamp.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the drum of the mounting clamp defines a foot that extends beyond the front surface of the fin, wherein the foot is located within the channel when the fin is located in the pocket.

16. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the body defines an opening configured to receive one or more electrical devices, and wherein the flange at least partially surrounds the opening.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the apparatus comprises a wall box.

18. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the fin of the mounting clamp is further configured to rotate from the pocket until a knee of the mounting clamp contacts an edge surface of the pocket, and wherein the fin is substantially perpendicular to a sidewall of the body when the knee contacts the edge surface of the pocket.

19. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the body comprises an enclosure of an electrical device.
