Devices for treating the spine
Method and apparatus are disclosed for distracting tissue and particularly spinal tissue. The device and method may include insertion of at least one elongated member and an augmenting member to form a structure between the tissues to be distraction, such that a dimensional aspect of the structure is augmented upon movement of the augmenting structure.
1. A tissue distraction device, comprising:
a first elongated member including a top portion, a bottom portion, and a plurality of deformable connection members each extending from the top portion to the bottom portion; and
an augmenting elongated member at least partially insertable between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member, wherein
the first elongated member is movable from a first configuration having a height to a second configuration having a greater height, and
insertion of at least a portion of the augmenting elongated member between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member causes deformation of the plurality of deformable connection members and movement of the first elongated member from the first configuration to the second configuration.
2. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the first elongated member is formed of a polyether ether ketone material.
3. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein
a longitudinal passage is defined between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member, and
the augmenting elongated member is at least partially insertable into the longitudinal passage to move the first elongated member from the first configuration to the second configuration.
4. The tissue distraction device of claim 3 , wherein at least two of the plurality of deformable connection members are positioned at opposite lateral sides of the longitudinal passage.
5. The tissue distraction device of claim 3 , wherein
at least two of the plurality of deformable connection members are positioned in a first row extending along a length of the first elongated member,
at least another two of the plurality of deformable connection members are positioned in a second row extending along the length of the first elongated member, and
the first and second rows are positioned at opposite lateral sides of the longitudinal passage.
6. The tissue distraction device of claim 3 , wherein the longitudinal passage extends along an entire length of the first elongated member.
7. The tissue distraction device of claim 3 , wherein a distal end portion of the augmenting elongated member is tapered to a height less than the height of the longitudinal passage when the first elongated member is in the first configuration.
8. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the plurality of deformable connection members are positioned in a row extending along a length of the first elongated member.
9. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the plurality of deformable connection members are substantially identically configured.
10. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the first elongated member is monolithic.
11. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of deformable connection members define portions of opposing lateral surfaces of the first elongated member.
12. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the augmenting elongated member is generally rigid in a direction extending between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member.
13. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the augmenting elongated member includes at least one formation configured to contact an inner surface of the first elongated member so as to retain the augmenting elongated member in position between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member.
14. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the first elongated member has a generally rectangular shape in the first configuration in a plane perpendicular to a length of the first elongated member.
15. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the first elongated member has a generally rectangular shape in the second configuration in a plane perpendicular to a length of the first elongated member.
16. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the first elongated member has a generally rectangular shape in the first and second configurations in a plane perpendicular to a length of the first elongated member.
17. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of deformable connection members are configured to bias the first elongated member to the first configuration.
18. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the entirety of the first elongated member is movable from the first configuration to the second configuration.
19. The tissue distraction device of claim 18 , wherein the augmenting elongated member is separate from the first elongated member and configured for movement from a first position entirely outside of the first elongated member to a second position at least partially located between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member.
20. The tissue distraction device of claim 1 , wherein the augmenting elongated member is separate from the first elongated member and configured for movement from a first position entirely outside of the first elongated member to a second position at least partially located between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member.
21. A tissue distraction device, comprising:
a first elongated member including a top portion, a bottom portion, and a plurality of deformable connection members extending between the top portion and the bottom portion; and
an augmenting elongated member at least partially insertable between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member, wherein
the entirety of the first elongated member is movable from a first configuration having a height to a second configuration having a greater height, and
insertion of at least a portion of the augmenting elongated member between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member causes deformation of the plurality of deformable connection members and movement of the entirety of the first elongated member from the first configuration to the second configuration, and
each of the first elongated member and the augmenting elongated member is sized and configured for complete insertion between vertebral body tissues.
22. A tissue distraction device, comprising:
a first elongated member including a top portion, a bottom portion, and a plurality of deformable connection members extending between the top portion and the bottom portion; and
a separate augmenting elongated member configured for movement from a first position entirely outside of the first elongated member to a second position at least substantially entirely located between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member, wherein
the first elongated member is movable from a first configuration having a height to a second configuration having a greater height, and
insertion of at least a portion of the augmenting elongated member between the top portion and the bottom portion of the first elongated member causes deformation of the plurality of deformable connection members and movement of the first elongated member from the first configuration to the second configuration.
