Abstract

A pipe coil lifting device includes a superstructure with a central longitudinal member and at least two supports attached to opposite sides of the central longitudinal member, with two channels at the outside long-edges of the superstructure attached to the supports, with a convex upper surface attached to the supports of the superstructure.

Claims (39)

1. A pipe coil lifting device comprising:

a first channel configured to accommodate a first tine of a forklift;

a second channel configured to accommodate a second tine of the forklift;

a central longitudinal member that runs parallel to the first channel and the second channel;

a first support attached to a first top surface of the first channel and a first side surface of the central longitudinal member;

a second support attached to a second top surface of the second channel and a second side surface of the central longitudinal member;

a first convex upper surface section attached on top of the first support and to the first side surface of the central longitudinal member; and

a second convex upper surface section attached on top of the second support and to the second side surface of the central longitudinal member.

2. The pipe coil lifting device of claim 1 , wherein the central longitudinal member is exposed between the first convex upper surface section and the second convex upper surface section.

3. The pipe coil lifting device of claim 1 , wherein the central longitudinal member comprises:

a first end member at a first; and

a second end member at a second end.

4. The pipe coil lifting device of claim 1 , wherein the first convex upper surface section overlaps upon a first outside surface of the first channel and the second convex upper surface section overlaps upon a second outside surface of the second channel to facilitate stiffening the pipe coil lifting device.

5. The pipe coil lifting device of claim 1 , comprising a coating applied on the first convex upper surface section and the second convex upper surface section.

6. The pipe coil lifting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first convex upper surface section comprises a first curve that changes the first convex upper surface section from a first radius of curvature to a second radius of curvature to facilitate protecting an interior surface of a coil of flexible pipe loaded on the pipe coil lifting device; and

the second convex upper surface section comprises a second curve that changes the second convex upper surface section from the first radius of curvature to the second radius of curvature to facilitate protecting the interior surface of the coil of flexible pipe loaded on the pipe coil lifting device.

7. A method for lifting a pipe coil comprising:

inserting a pipe coil lifting device into an interior channel of the pipe coil, wherein the pipe coil lifting device comprises:

a first channel that accommodates a first tine of a forklift;

a second channel that accommodates a second tine of the forklift;

a central longitudinal member that runs parallel to the first channel and the second channel;

a first support attached to a first top surface of the first channel and a first side surface of the central longitudinal member;

a second support attached to a second top surface of the second channel and a second side surface of the central longitudinal member;

a first convex surface section attached on top of the first support and to the first side surface of the central longitudinal member; and

a second convex upper surface section attached on top of the second support and to the second side surface of the central longitudinal member; and

lifting the pipe coil using the pipe coil lifting device.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the central longitudinal member is exposed between the first convex upper surface section and the second convex upper surface section.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the central longitudinal member comprises end members at opposite ends of the central longitudinal member.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein:

the first convex upper surface section comprises a first curve that changes the first convex upper surface section from a first radius of curvature to a second radius of curvature to facilitate protecting an interior surface of the pipe coil; and

the second convex upper surface section comprises a second curve that changes the second convex upper surface section from the first radius of curvature to the second radius of curvature to facilitate protecting the interior surface of the pipe coil.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein lifting the pipe coil using the pipe coil lifting device comprises:

inserting the first tine of the forklift into the first channel of the pipe coil lifting device;

inserting the second tine of the forklift into the second channel of the pipe coil lifting device; and

lifting the pipe coil at least in part by operating the forklift to raise the first tine and the second tine.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein lifting the pipe coil using the pipe coil lifting device comprises lifting the pipe coil lifting device using the forklift.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first convex upper surface section overlaps upon a first outside surface of the first channel and the second convex upper surface section overlaps upon a second outside surface of the second channel to facilitate stiffening the pipe coil lifting device.

14. The method of claim 7 , wherein the pipe coil lifting device comprises a coating applied on the first convex upper surface section and the second convex upper surface section.
