Abstract

A compressor may include a shell assembly, a compression mechanism and a conduit. The shell assembly may include a fitting through which fluid is received from outside of the compressor. The compression mechanism may be disposed within a chamber defined by the shell assembly. The conduit may extend through the chamber between the fitting and a suction inlet of the compression mechanism and transmit at least a portion of the fluid from the fitting to the suction inlet. The conduit may include an inlet that may be spaced apart from the fitting and an outlet that may engage the compression mechanism.

Claims (38)

1. A compressor comprising:

a shell assembly having a fitting through which fluid is received from outside of the compressor;

a first scroll disposed within a chamber defined by the shell assembly, the first scroll including a first end plate and a first spiral wrap extending from the first end plate;

a second scroll disposed within the chamber and including a second end plate and a second spiral wrap extending from the second end plate, the first and second spiral wraps meshing with each other to define compression pockets; and

a conduit extending through the chamber between the fitting and a suction inlet of the first scroll and transmitting at least a portion of the fluid from the fitting to the suction inlet, the conduit including an inlet adjacent the fitting and an outlet adjacent the suction inlet of the first scroll, wherein the conduit snaps into engagement with a wall of the first scroll,

wherein the inlet of the conduit is spaced apart from the fitting,

wherein the conduit is spaced apart from the shell assembly such that the conduit does not physically contact the shell assembly or the fitting, and

wherein the conduit includes an aperture spaced apart from the inlet and the outlet and provides fluid communication between the conduit and the chamber.

2. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the conduit includes a plurality of resiliently flexible tabs having barbed tips that snap into engagement with the first scroll.

3. The compressor of claim 2 , wherein the flexible tabs are received through the suction inlet of the first scroll.

4. The compressor of claim 3 , wherein the flexible tabs at least partially define the outlet of the conduit.

5. The compressor of claim 4 , wherein the flexible tabs snap into engagement with the wall of the first scroll, wherein the wall of the first scroll defines the suction inlet, and wherein the conduit includes a flange that abuts an outer surface of the wall of the first scroll.

6. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the inlet of the conduit extends partially into the fitting such that an annular gap is formed therebetween.

7. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the inlet of the conduit has a larger diameter than a flange portion of the fitting such that an annular gap is formed between the flange portion and the inlet of the conduit.

8. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein a longitudinal axis of the fitting extends through the suction inlet of the first scroll.

9. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein a longitudinal axis of the fitting is disposed vertically below the suction inlet of the first scroll.

10. A compressor comprising:

a shell assembly having a fitting through which fluid is received from outside of the compressor;

a first scroll disposed within a chamber defined by the shell assembly, the first scroll including a first end plate and a first spiral wrap extending from the first end plate;

a second scroll disposed within the chamber and including a second end plate and a second spiral wrap extending from the second end plate, the first and second spiral wraps meshing with each other to define compression pockets; and

a conduit extending through the chamber between the fitting and a suction inlet of the first scroll and transmitting at least a portion of the fluid from the fitting to the suction inlet, the conduit including an inlet adjacent the fitting and an outlet adjacent the suction inlet of the first scroll, wherein the conduit snaps into engagement with a wall of the first scroll,

wherein a longitudinal axis of the fitting is disposed vertically below the suction inlet of the first scroll, and

wherein the conduit includes a resiliently flexible tab having a barbed tip that snaps into engagement with the first scroll.

11. The compressor of claim 10 , wherein the conduit includes an aperture spaced apart from the inlet and the outlet and provides fluid communication between the conduit and the chamber.

12. The compressor of claim 10 , wherein the flexible tab snaps into engagement with the wall of the first scroll, and wherein the wall of the first scroll defines the suction inlet of the first scroll.

13. A compressor comprising:

a shell assembly having a fitting through which fluid is received from outside of the compressor;

a first scroll disposed within a chamber defined by the shell assembly, the first scroll including a first end plate and a first spiral wrap extending from the first end plate;

a second scroll disposed within the chamber and including a second end plate and a second spiral wrap extending from the second end plate, the first and second spiral wraps meshing with each other to define compression pockets; and

a conduit extending through the chamber between the fitting and a suction inlet of the first scroll and transmitting at least a portion of the fluid from the fitting to the suction inlet, the conduit is spaced apart from the shell assembly such that the conduit does not physically contact the shell assembly or the fitting, the conduit including an inlet adjacent the fitting and an outlet received in the suction inlet of the first scroll, wherein the conduit snaps into engagement with a wall of the first scroll that defines the suction inlet,

wherein the conduit includes a plurality of resiliently flexible tabs having barbed tips that snap into engagement with the first scroll.

14. The compressor of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of flexible tabs are received through the suction inlet of the first scroll.

15. The compressor of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of flexible tabs at least partially define the outlet of the conduit.

16. The compressor of claim 15 , wherein the conduit includes a flange that abuts an outer surface of the wall of the first scroll.

17. The compressor of claim 16 , wherein the conduit includes an aperture spaced apart from the inlet and the outlet and provides fluid communication between the conduit and the chamber.

18. The compressor of claim 16 , wherein the inlet of the conduit extends partially into the fitting such that an annular gap is formed therebetween.

19. The compressor of claim 16 , wherein the inlet of the conduit has a larger diameter than a flange portion of the fitting such that an annular gap is formed between the flange portion and the inlet of the conduit.

20. The compressor of claim 13 , wherein a longitudinal axis of the fitting extends through the suction inlet of the first scroll.
